2 What we will cover this evening An overview of Key Stage 4 at Oathall The different pathways that students may follow A breakdown of the subjects that can be studied How to make the option choices using INSIGHT Guidance on how to make good choices

3 Key Stage 4 - Years 10 and 11 All students study GCSE English language and literature, mathematics and science take Core Physical Education (PE) and Personal Development (PD) which includes Religious Education study other GCSE or equivalent vocational subjects that they have some choice over (the option subjects) Most students will include a humanities subject (history, geography or religious studies) and a modern foreign language (French, German or Spanish) in their option subjects

4 Key Stage 4 - Years 10 and 11 Some students will not be required to study a modern foreign language will follow the Step-up to English and maths course

7 What courses do we offer? The core - taken by all students These are all GCSE qualifications - Graded 9 to 1 English language English literature Mathematics Further maths - Taken by more able students in addition to maths GCSE, will include an after school lesson Combined Science - 2 GCSE grades Triple Science - Taken by upper sets in place of Combine Science

8 What courses do we offer? The option subjects - GCSE qualifications Languages Humanities Other option subjects French History Art, Craft and Design German Geography Business Studies Spanish Religious Studies Computing Drama Engineering Music Photography Physical Education

9 What courses do we offer? The option subjects - Technical and vocational qualifications Animal Care BTEC First Award Child Development National certificate Dance (Performing Arts) BTEC Tech Award Hospitality and Catering Tech Award Sport BTEC Tech Award All level 2 & 1 which is equivalent to the full range of GCSE grades (9 to 1) All carry the same weighting as a single GCSE

10 GCSE or Technical / Vocational Award? Both cover the full range of outcomes - grade 1 to 9 or equivalent GCSEs are assessed by exam only apart from Art, Engineering and Photography Technical / Vocational Awards have an exam element but have a greater degree of practical assessment - the teachers can explain this further

14 Using INSIGHT to complete the options choices Log into INSIGHT on a parent s account Select the General menu

16 Select the Option block (A,B,C or D) Select the subject you want to choose from this block

17 Confirm the choice Repeat this for the other option blocks Do not select any reserve choices

18 You can remove a choice by clicking the red cross

19 Key dates Wednesday 10 January - Options evening Thursday 18 January - Parents evening Monday 15 January - Options opens on Insight Friday 26 January - Options deadline

20 Selecting the right options for you There are many things to consider when selecting your options. Know your strengths What are you good at? Which band are you working at? Do you know what you have got to do to improve?

21 Selecting the right options for you What interests you the most? Which subjects do you look forward to the most? Which subjects are you most motivated to learn in?

22 Selecting the right options for you Avoid selecting subjects because: your friends are you like/dislike a teacher you think it will be easy Remember the choices you make now will matter for the rest of your life.

23 Allocation of option choices Once you have selected your options, we will try to meet your choices. There will be a small number of students that may not be be able to study their preferred option choices, for example if there are too few students that have selected the option in the first place. Should this happen there will be a conversation with both the student and parent.

24 Final points Insight will open on Monday 15 January You must submit your choices by Friday 26 January Parents Evening Thursday 18 January Option choices will be confirmed in the Summer Term In the meantime No news is good news
