2 The information in this packet is presented as a resource for students and their parents interested in junior high school summer school courses. SD 308 offers two summer school options: initial credit recovery and enrichment courses. You are encouraged to review these materials carefully before registering. Students may choose to enroll in one or two class offerings. All summer school courses will be held at Plank Junior High School. Transportation: Bus transportation will be available for students. The bus schedule and stops will be based on enrollment and communicated to families the first week of June by the Transportation Department. Stops will be at or near several 308 schools; additional stops will be considered based on enrollment. Bus transportation will be provided to school for 8:00 a.m. classes and will be available for the 12:00 p.m. dismissal only. Course Fees: Credit Recovery Courses: $ per course Non-Credit Enrichment Courses: See individual course description for costs Tuition must be paid in full to hold a student s slot in summer school. Students will not be allowed to attend class until tuition is paid in full. Tuition is waived for all students who qualify for waived fees. (If you are unsure of your fee status, please contact your home school.) Payment: Payments may be made in one of three different ways: 1. Check made out to SD308 and mailed to: Junior High Summer School 510 Secretariat Lane Oswego, IL Credit card through Home Access once the fee has been posted to your child s account (approximately 5 days after registration has been submitted) or 3. Cash Dropped off at Plank Junior High School Dropping A Course and Refunds: Students may choose to drop a course prior to the first day and receive a full refund. After classes begin, a student may drop but will not receive a refund. 2

3 Attendance for Credit Recovery and Non-Credit Enrichment: Credit recovery courses are a blend of online and direct instruction. Attendance is required for each day of the semester. Students who fail to attend class will be dropped from the course after the second absence. Not participating, inappropriate behavior, arriving late, leaving class early, or not returning after a break will be counted as a full-day absence. Refunds will not be issued for students dropped from the course. These courses require a minimum of 15 students to enroll in order for the course to run. Credit Recovery Summer School Course Offerings* Breakfast: Breakfast items will be served beginning at 7:30 a.m. daily. If your child is attending school for all four hours, they are encouraged to bring a snack. Courses: 6th Grade English Language Arts (2 Hours) 7th Grade English Language Arts (2 Hours) 8th Grade English Language Arts (2 Hours) 6th Grade Math (2 Hours) 7th Grade Math (2 Hours) 8th Grade Math (2 Hours) Study Skills (2 Hours) * Credit recovery courses are potentially a blend of online and direct instruction. Daily attendance at Plank Junior High School is mandatory for the three-week semester. After the second absence, a student will be dropped from the course. 4 Course Non-Credit Junior High School Enrichment Courses Course Fee/Per Session SAT PREP (4 Hours) $40.00 This 4 hour, 2 day workshop provides a guided review of the math and verbal skills for the New Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). The course includes careful analysis for completion of the test sections on evidence-based reading and writing, writing strategies and tips for the optional essay, and a comprehensive review of algebra and advanced math with and without the use of a calculator. Test-taking techniques and strategies will be discussed. This workshop is taught at an accelerated, concentrated pace. Students must bring a graphing calculator. When Offered 6/6 and 6/7 Only Bridge into 6th Grade Honors (2 Hours) $ /6 6/24 This course has been designed for incoming sixth graders who are moving into honors math and have not been in an AT course at the elementary level. The primary focus will be on the skills necessary to make a successful transition from regular math to the honors program. Bridge into 7th Grade Honors (2 Hours) $ This course has been designed for incoming seventh graders who are moving into an honors level course for the first time. The primary focus will be on the skills necessary to make a successful transition from general education to the honors program. 6/6 6/24 Bridge into Algebra One and Pre-AP English One (2 Hours) $ /6 6/24 This course is for students who are going into Honors courses during their 8th Grade year. The focus of the class will be on the skills needed to help make a successful transition from 7th Grade to 8th Grade Honors and to help prepare students for high school level work. Computer Programming (2 Hours) $ /6 6/24 This course has been designed for beginner and intermediate programmers that are interested in learning the languages of computer programming. The course will cover both the Hour of Code, as well as fundamentals of different coding languages such as C, Python and Java. Learn the basics of coding as well as the languages that run programs like Instagram, Firefox and Pinterest. No previous programming experience needed. Introduction to Spanish (2 Hours) $ /6 6/24 This is an introductory course for students who want to get a head start in learning the Spanish language and culture. The focus will include greetings, numbers, the alphabet, families, animals, sports, and more. It will incorporate conversations, games, and online resources, such as Quia, to make learning Spanish fun. This course is designed for beginner Spanish speakers that have yet to take a Spanish class. 4

5 Lego Robotics (2 Hours) $ /6 6/24 This course has been designed for students that are a member of a First Lego League team, are interesting in joining a team or are just interested in Robotics. Students will learn the basics of the EV3 programs and then spend time programming robots to compete on actual First Lego League competition boards from previous seasons. Students do not need to be on a First Lego League team to participate in this course and no previous robotics experience needed. Once Upon a Time: Script Writing 101 (2 Hours) /6 6/24 This is an introductory course designed for students that are interested in the performing arts. The focus of this course will be on the dos and don'ts of script writing. Students will learn how to write a script for a play and then they will put what they learn into practice. After writing a script, students will spend time preparing the script for performance. This course includes a performance that is open to family and friends on the last day of class. Spanish Review (2 Hours) $ /6 6/24 This is a course designed for students who have taken a year of Spanish and would like to prepare for the next level. The focus of this course is to review vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. Students will participate in conversations, play interactive games and utilize online resources to sharpen their skills. This course is a great way to reinforce previously learned concepts and get a head start in the next level of Spanish. Young Adult Literature: 6th 8th Grade (2 Hours) $ /6 6/24 This course is designed for students who enjoy exploring the world through reading. Through this course, students receive the opportunity to see the world in a new way and readers are inspired to think about life and its universal truths. Students will have the opportunity to choose from a list of fiction and nonfiction works that have been selected for their grade level. This course is designed to promote reading as a life-long pastime and to reinforce novel skills from the past to use in the future. 5
