2 Curriculum Overview In Year 7 all students will have exposure to every learning area. Students will have timetabled classes in Maths, English, Science, Humanities, Physical Education and Health. Year 7 students will have to choose a Language (Italian or Indonesian) to study for the year. Semester courses will be studied in a Visual Arts (Media, Visual Art) and a Performance Arts (General Music, Drama, Dance, Circus) as well as a Digital Technology and a Design and Technology (Food and Materials). The table below outlines the Year 7 timetable. They will study two subjects in Semester 1 and a different two subjects in Semester 2. We cannot guarantee that all classes offered will run, as they are dependent on a number of factors. For this reason it is essential that students carefully follow the instructions on ranking subjects on the enclosed Subject Selections sheet. We will attempt to allocate your child their highest ranked subjects but they may not be given their top preferences. The information included in this handbook gives an overview of the electives which are available for students to choose from and study in Students who are successful in obtaining a place in the Specialist Music Program or the Visual Art Extension Program will have per week for the full year, not just one semester. They will then not be required to choose a second Arts subject. Student Selection Process 1. Use the Year 7 Subject Selection Form 2018 to rank the preferences as per the instructions. 2. Sign the completed form and , post or hand-deliver the form to Business Centre Canning Vale College or via Vanessa.Bromfield@education.wa.edu.au 26 Dumbarton Road CANNING VALE WA Preferences will be collated and decisions will then be made about which subjects will be running in Once this is decided then class groups will be created according to student preferences and other student subject allocations. 4. Whilst we try to place students into their most preferred subjects some students may not be able to get their highest priority choices in which case they will be given their next available choice. 5. In December, once all of the classes, staff and room allocations for 2018 are completed, an invoice will be sent to each family which will include the subjects that each child is enrolled in for the following year. Additional Charges Please note that subjects in Years 7-10 attract compulsory charges as indicated on the selection form. Please Note: The subjects listed in this handbook will only operate next year if they attract sufficient numbers and they can be timetabled. 2 P a g e

3 THE ARTS LEARNING AREA Students in Year 7 are required to participate in a Visual/Media Art subject for one semester and a Performing Art for one semester (General Music, Dance, Drama or Circus). Visual Art In Visual Art, students will have the opportunity to use and apply visual art language and artistic conventions as they create their own 2D and/or 3D artwork. Their projects will encourage and develop their ability to respond to their own artwork and the work of others. Studio areas may include drawing, painting, printmaking, textiles, ceramics and sculpture. Students will have the opportunity to have their work displayed in our gallery space during the whole school Art Exhibition. This pathway prepares students for Visual Arts pathway in upper school. Possible future careers in the area of Visual Art are graphic artist, web designer, publishing, advertising, artist, fashion designer and ceramic and textiles artist. Visual Art Extension (selection process applies via expression of interest and portfolio entry) Students must submit an expression of interest form and then take part in testing and portfolio interviews. From this students are invited to join Visual Art Extension. Students who are accepted into the Visual Art Extension Program will have Extension Art classes for two hours per week for the full year. This class takes part in school time but entry also relies on attendance in a Wednesday after school class. In this program students are introduced to a range of art techniques and opportunities that are not available in regular art class. Students learn to develop and extend their skills in practical art making through a range of traditional and contemporary techniques. Students are given the opportunity to enter their artwork into some of the state s most recognised high school art competitions as well as many local community exhibitions. Students endeavour on excursions to visit different exhibitions in Perth and to see Australian and International Artists work. The program gives students the opportunity to work with local practicing artists, to give them insight as to how artists plan, create and display their artwork in the real world. This class will also prepare students for year senior school ATAR pathways. Media Studies This practical course will introduce students to the basic communication model and how to explore different viewpoints in contemporary media. Students will develop skills in planning and creating their own media work plus develop the language and skills to respond to their own work and the work of others. Students will be introduced to design processes including storyboarding through to filming and editing to adding special effects using the green screen in our purpose built Media Studio. Students work as a team, follow timelines, and use processes and strategies to ensure safe and responsible use of media equipment. Drama - Theatre Experience All the world s a stage. Explore the world of drama and theatre in this taster course. Activities include improvisation based games, mime and pantomime, and developing skills to stage short comedy plays in our wonderful, fully equipped Performing Arts Centre. The program may include a professional theatre company production incursion that will incur an extra charge. Circus Learn simple circus skills, develop an understanding of stage practices, learn to engage audiences, work safely in a team and have lots of fun. As part of this course students will receive an overview of the performing arts with a focus on the skills needed to perform in a circus team. This course has pathways into Certificate I and II courses in upper school. 3 P a g e

4 Dance In this course students will learn expressive dance and performance skills. Students will be given the opportunity to develop skills in body awareness, balance, flexibility and stamina. This course will be focusing on a range of dance styles. Students will have the opportunity to perform before audiences. This course will be a great preparation for students wishing to enrol in Certificate II in Dance in upper school. General Music Music making using software, and recording and mixing music are presented over a year in sequence. The courses are designed to provide an introduction to concepts related to contemporary music production, in a practical and interactive way. The courses promote exploration and creativity using current music technology. Learning topics covered include: using simple loops, production analysis, producing, midi introduction, balancing instruments, making music using software, music production, mixing and editing. Some musical background is required for this subject. School of Instrumental Music (SIM) students who do not get into our Specialist Music Program must choose this course to continue their SIM lessons. Specialist Music Program (by application only - selection process applies) Year 7 students who are accepted into the Specialist Music Program will have music classes for per week for the full year, plus some additional lessons and rehearsals will occur outside of normal school hours. Students enrolled in this course are expected to attend and participate in all the musical activities organised. SIM music is separate to the Specialist Music Program. Students can do both. Design and Technologies Food Specialisations TECHNOLOGIES LEARNING AREA This course offers students experience in the food preparation aspect of Home Economics, particularly experience with food handling and developing preparation skills. Students will gain knowledge of healthy eating and a balanced diet for adolescence. Design and Technologies Materials and Technologies Specialistions A practical based subject designed to provide students with the opportunity to develop skills in a variety of disciplines such as woodwork, metalwork, jewellery making, plastics and building construction. Focusing primarily in the development of production skills, this subject will provide students with hands-on experience working with materials, to develop skills in the design and fabrication of various projects and to acquire a working knowledge of the tools and machinery commonly used in modern trades. Possible projects include a toolbox, side table and pendant making. Digital Technologies All Year 7 students will study this compulsory course for one semester. Students will learn how to effectively use technology to meet their personal computing needs using a range of programs. While the course will initially focus on becoming competent in everyday programs like MS Word, students will also learn how to use Photoshop and Garageband. 4 P a g e

5 LANGUAGES LEARNING AREA Students must choose to study either Italian or Indonesian for Years 7 and 8. As language learning is cumulative, students must continue with the language chosen in Year 7 into Year 8. Every effort will be made to place students in their preferred language course, however it may not always be possible due to timetabling constraints. Important Information about Languages Pathways The School Curriculum and Standards Authority has specific criteria for enrolling in WACE Languages Courses in Year 11 and 12. These criteria should be considered when choosing which Language to study in Year 7. CVC offers Second Language Course Pathways for both Italian and Indonesian into Year 11 and 12. Criteria for Permission to Enrol in a WACE Language Course in Year 11 and 12 A student must meet all the criteria for enrolment: Education, Residency and time spent in-country and Use of language outside the classroom. Today, there are many Australian businesses with trade links in Italy, many Italians travel to Australia for leisure and work and Italy is a popular tourist destination for Australians. The Year 7 Italian course caters for students who have studied Italian in primary school who are ready to extend their knowledge and also for students who have no prior experience in learning Italian. Students will develop a strong foundation in the skills of listening and speaking, reading and writing and will apply their knowledge in a variety of contexts. They will also develop an appreciation of cultural differences and similarities between life in Italy and Australia. The Year 7 course will cover the themes of All About Me, The People in My Life, Let s Celebrate! and Hobbies and Leisure Activities. Indonesian Indonesian is the official language of Australia s nearest neighbour, being spoken by more than 200 million people throughout Indonesia. Studying Indonesian means being able to communicate, understand and interact with our nearest neighbours. Australia has strong political and trade links with Indonesia and Indonesia is a very popular tourist destination for Australians. The Year 7 Indonesian course caters for students who have studied Indonesian in primary school who are ready to extend their knowledge and also for students who have no prior experience in learning Indonesian. 5 P a g e
