1 PE at Elm Grove Primary School Physical Education provides children with learning opportunities through movement and contributes to their overall development by helping them to lead full, active and healthy lives. Early Years and PE In the Early Years physical development is a core area of learning. Oak class enjoys daily physical activities. Beefit provides a weekly movement session and the children also enjoy a weekly gymnastics, dance or games lesson. All children in Early Years also take part in swimming throughout the year. Throughout the day the children are provided with activities and equipment to help our young children gain control of their bodies and learn how to keep themselves active and healthy. The children also learn to use equipment and materials appropriately and safely as well as having lots of fun! The National Curriculum Once the children leave the Early Years they work within the National Curriculum for P.E and have access to 2 hours of P.E every week. During P.E lessons the children focus on developing the core skills of balance, coordination and agility and are then given the opportunities to apply what they have learnt. Physical Education at Elm Grove provides opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. The National Curriculum for Physical Education at Elm Grove aims to ensure that all pupils Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities Are physically active for sustained periods of time Engage in competitive sports and activities Lead healthy, active lives. In Key Stage 1 children should be taught to: Master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities Participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending Perform dances using simple movement patterns. In Key stage 2 children should be taught to: Use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination Play competitive games, modified where appropriate [for example, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounder s and tennis], and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending Develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance [for example, through athletics and gymnastics] Perform dances using a range of movement patterns

2 Take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team Compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best. and water safety: All schools must provide swimming instruction either in key stage 1 or key stage 2. In particular, pupils should be taught to: Swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 meters use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke] Perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations. Assessing the children in P.E We assess pupils in all aspects of PE and Games at a number of stages throughout the year. In some areas, the pupils are able to self- and peer-assess and use this knowledge to help them analyse and improve their own and others performances. Assessment information is also used to ensure that teaching is adapted to suit the individual needs of all pupils. Plans have been rewritten. Teachers really enjoy teaching indoor athletics and the children have loved the lessons. Equipment is all in place. Demonstration lessons were successful over half a term. The school provides a range of after school clubs for all year groups and is continuing these clubs uptake is improving as new clubs are being offered. Assessment To implement the new assessment procedure. Assessment has been evaluated and now needs to be worked on alongside consultations with staff to update and put on Target Tracker to add detail to PE statements. Staff CPD Intra school sport To provide staff with training and support in the areas they have identified for this year.. To implement an intra-school activity at the end of each half term. Summary Total School Sports Premium Received 8, Total Expenditure 7, Money remaining 1,055 All staff that identified a need for CPD was able to access training and were supported in their PE lessons throughout the year. The results of the questionnaires show that the staff continue to feel more confident in these areas. This has started and will be developed further during the next year.

4 1. plans: These plans have initially been written for the first term of swimming and gave the new swimming teacher a basis for group assessment and a clear progression of sessions, allowing all children to work towards STA swimming awards. The teacher is able to identify from the plans the aims of the session and for the term and use the plans accordingly to ensure progression and continuity. 2. Year 4 plans: These plans progress from the year 3 plans implemented last year and give the teacher clear learning outcomes. The class teacher has these plans and is working from them successfully. 3. Specialist support: Support has been provided to the two year 1 teachers and the new Year 4 teacher. The teachers have worked alongside Debbie Webb to increase confidence in delivering the plans effectively. All 3 teachers have commented on the benefit of this support and the opportunity to see how to deliver high quality PE lessons. The children all enjoy the sessions and are actively involved. 4. Clubs: The premium has provided a specialist gym coach delivering gymnastics to year 1, 2, 3 and 4 pupils. The children have had the opportunity to work towards British Gymnastics Badges and take part in the locality gym competition. Both teams did very well in the competition.

7 Sport Premium Funding What is the Sports Premium? The government provided funding of 150 million per annum to provide new and substantial primary school sport funding. The funding was jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, with the money going directly to primary school Head teachers to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all their children. Each school received 8,000 plus an extra 5 per pupil each year for the two years. The money could only be spent on sport and PE provision in schools. Purpose of the funding Schools have to spend the sport funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they have the freedom to choose how they do this. Possible uses of the funding include: Hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work alongside primary teachers when teaching PE New or additional Change4Life sport clubs Paying for professional development opportunities in PE/sport Providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE/sport Running sport competitions, or increasing participation in the school games Buying quality assured professional development modules or material for PE/sport Providing places for pupils on after school sport clubs and residential visits. We are working on organising the equipment more effectively to ensure teachers can access the equipment needed. The children are having great fun in their lessons and we are improving our playground provision by making sure that the children have access to the equipment when they are out to play.

8 Enrichment of Learning in Physical Education Children have the opportunity to take part in many sporting clubs that take place throughout the year. These extra-curricular clubs are provided by colleagues from Elm Grove Primary School as well as external agencies. This year the partnership have offered us more to ensure that we effectively deploy our Sports Premium funding to deliver outstanding teaching and learning in P.E. The programme will support our school to deliver outstanding pedagogy across Key Stage 1 and 2, ensure that each school strives towards a sustainable legacy to raise expectations towards physical literacy and builds on the basic School Sports partnership. Pupils who are identified as More Able in PE or Games are given the opportunity to take part in a number of enrichment activities across Worthing. This Year we have entered a range of competitions to raise the awareness of competitive sports in school.
