1 29 th January 2016 Dear Parents Burns Night Over 100 parents, staff and friends, celebrated the life of Robbie Burns on Saturday evening. The evening started with the traditional meal of haggis, neeps and tatties with toasts to the haggis, Robbie Burns and Brian Winter, who never missed what was one of his favourite evenings of the school calendar. The Ceilidh Band as always was very impressive and the Caller showed a great deal of patience with his mixed-ability Scottish dancers. I would like to thank Mr Camm for leading the Ceilidh Band, the students for giving up their time to rehearse and attend and the PA for organizing the event. Holocaust Memorial Day On Thursday evening Richard Hale hosted the annual commemorative event. In a departure from previous years, three Hertford secondary schools, Richard Hale, Simon Balle and Sele, worked in partnership with each other and local primary schools. During the course of the evening we were engaged by contributions from a large number of our students: Never Silent by Year 10 Drama, Lessons from Auschwitz by Reuben Omolu and Darren Rayner, two short films called Thou Shall not be a Bystander and The Boys made by RHS staff and students, specially composed music performed by our string ensemble, all ably narrated by Head Boy, Tom Davies, and Head Girl, Sally Cowler. Behind the scenes a large number of staff and students played their part and deserve to be thanked for their outstanding effort. Head of RE, Tom Brownlee, was commended as the lead teacher for his role in making the event such a success. Maths Challenge Competition The Maths department broke with tradition this week by doubling the number of teams participating in our local heat of the Year 7 Herts Maths Challenge competition. Facing rounds involving estimation, memory, mental arithmetic and team-working, our two teams not only battled tough opposition but also battled one another in staking their claim to top-spot. Whilst both missed out on first place, joint second position was an excellent result - leaving the topspot question still hanging and we will have to wait and see if their result will be sufficient for a joint invitation to the County final. Well done to all of those in both teams (Frederick Aitken, George Clarke, Matthew Crosby, Matthew Day, Daniel Fitzgerald, Matthew Francis, Callum Hair and Cameron Smith). Chemistry Olympiad A record number for the School of 22 Year 12 and 13 students have participated in the Royal Society of Chemistry Olympiad competition. This competition stretches and challenges post-16 Chemistry students by testing their chemical knowledge. The competition involves participants voluntarily sitting a 2 hour examination which consists of questions which are based on realworld chemistry problems that often stimulate much debate, raising awareness of what chemistry is all about and provide an opportunity to develop and showcase some of the skills required for studying Chemistry at university and beyond. Gold, silver and bronze certificates are awarded to high-scoring students, while the top-performing students from participating UK schools are chosen by the Royal Society of Chemistry Olympiad Selection Committee to progress to Round two.
2 Enrichment Day On Wednesday 3 rd February 2016, students will be off timetable experiencing a range of activities as follows: Year 7 Year 8 Year 9 Year 10 Year 11 Year 12 Year 13 Racism Design & Technology Day Holocaust Day First Aid training English Day Safety Day / coursework Politics / coursework Sport Football matches against Simon Balle on Saturday are as follows. Sports Partnership News Year 4 Sportshall Athletics - 10 Year 9 Leaders were deployed at the Sports Partnership's Year 4 Sportshall Festival last week. They worked with 8 schools and helped lead over 150 Year 4 pupils through the various sportshall activities. They all demonstrated sound leadership skills. Well done to them all. Taking the Lead - this event was planned and led by 21 Year 13 Sports Leaders as part of their Level 3 Certificate in Higher Sports Leadership. They worked with 7 schools and a total of 45 young people from our special schools across all forms of impairments and disabilities. The key focus of this event is to motivate, inspire and empower those with SEND to be confident to take the first step in leading. The Richard Hale Leaders were outstanding and clearly demonstrated skills and qualities above the expectations of the Level 3 Award. All the staff from the
3 accompanying schools had nothing but high praise for how the Richard Hale Leaders engaged with everyone. Parental Drug Awareness Workshop Concerned that your knowledge about drugs and alcohol is limited or out of date? Then we would like to invite you to our Drug Awareness Workshop specially designed for parents/guardians at Richard Hale School on the 22 nd February from 6.00pm, the session will be run by Hertfordshire County Council. The workshop aims to: Provide relevant, up to date information about alcohol, cannabis and legal highs in a safe and familiar environment Offer strategies for parents to have open conversations with their children about drug and alcohol misuse Promote ways parents can help children make positive, healthy choices As well as an interactive presentation and informal learning tasks, there will be an opportunity to ask questions and find out where to go for more information and support. If you would like to attend please Mrs Frederick at admin@richardhale.co.uk. Junior Ski Trip A letter confirming the final arrangements for this year s junior ski trip has been sent home via Wisepay, along with a copy of the Presentation slides from the parents meeting.
