Edusave Scholarships for Independent Schools (ESIS) From 2018, MOE will introduce the Edusave Scholarships for Independent Schools (ESIS), to replace the scholarships previously made available to students of an Independent School Awarded to Singaporean pupils in the top one-third of the total number of Sec 1 students admitted to all Independent Schools, based on their PSLE results (before bonus points) If interested, eligible students should opt for Independent Schools among their six choices Will be awarded to the student if she is eligible, opted and posted to an independent School

31 FACTORS TO CONSIDER IN CHOOSING THE 6 SCHOOLS

32 1) Choose schools that are comparable to your child s academic ability Reference - Child s academic performance in school - Secondary schools cut-off scores in previous year

33 2) Child s personality / character 3) Distance 4) School programmes & school culture 5) Affiliated schools For 2019 Sec 1 intake, affiliated schools must keep 20% of places in each stream for nonaffiliated students

34 Include a range of schools in the selection Rank order of choices School 1 st & 2 nd choices Cut-off above her T-score (no more than 5 points) 3 rd 4 th choices Cut-off within her T-score 5 th 6 th choices Cut-off below her T-score (5 10 points below)

35 Note the cut-off points will change depending on demand for places & vacancies If your child s PSLE T-score is near the school s 2017 cut-off, her chance in being admitted to the school is slimmer compared to those whose scores are higher

39 Direct School Admission (DSA)

40 DSA Started in 2004 Provides opportunities for admission beyond just grades sports & aesthetics achievements & other talents Applicable for all specialised schools, independent schools, autonomous schools and schools with approved distinctive programmes Schools decide their own admission criteria Students accepted before release of PSLE results

42 Stages of the DSA-Sec Exercise Selection Stage Jun End Aug Exercise School Preference Stage Mid Oct Results Release Stage Late-Nov Selection by schools (interview, camps, selection tests) Student receives outcome of application from the school(s) applied to (confirmed, waiting list, rejected) Students with Confirmed Offers or who have been put on the Waiting List of a school will receive a School Preference Form after PSLE from their respective primary schools. Parents can indicate their child s school preference(s) for up to 3 schools in the School Preference Form. Student collects her DSA-Sec allocation result from her primary school, together with her PSLE results.

43 Do note P6 students have a choice whether or not to participate in the DSA-Sec. If they choose not to participate in the DSA-Sec, they will participate in the Secondary One Posting Exercise after the release of the PSLE results. Students who opt for a school under DSA-Sec must achieve PSLE results that would enable them to be eligible for admission to the course being offered by their opted DSA-Sec schools.

44 Successful applicants admitted to a school through DSA-Sec will not be allowed to participate in the annual Secondary One Posting Exercise. They will also not be allowed to appeal to other secondary schools Applicants who are admitted to the secondary schools because of their CCA achievements will be obliged to continue in that CCA A student who is unsuccessful in the DSA-Sec Exercise will be notified of the outcome of the application and will participate in the Secondary One Posting Exercise. 45 1) Know your child : Considerations : - What are the strengths or interests of your child that you would like to develop further through the DSA school? -Does she want to continue in that programme or CCA in the secondary school? -Can she cope with the academic rigour in the school? -Manage her expectations, stress level and morale in applying for DSA

46 2) Understand the school - Culture, vision, mission and values - CCAs / Special Programmes - Match between the school s strengths/ distinctive programmes and your child s talents

47 3) Selection criteria - obtain more details on the schools selection criteria by: o Visiting the schools website o Visiting the schools open houses - consider applying to one or two schools that best cater to the child s needs - submit the DSA application form before the deadline. (Note: Please check the individual school website as the application period and procedures can vary from school to school.)
