1 THE SCHOOL DISTRICT OF PAUL HOUCHENS DAVID W. CHRISTIANSEN, ED.D. PALM BEACH COUNTY, FL DIRECTOR DEPUTY SUPERINTENDENT/CHIEF OF SCHOOLS DEPARTMENT OF RESEARCH, EVALUATION, & STATE ASSESSMENTS 3300 FOREST HILL BLVD, SUITE B-246 WEST PALM BEACH, FL MARK HOWARD CHIEF OF PERFORMANCE ACCOUNTABILITY PHONE: FAX: EXECUTIVE SUMMARY June 28, 2017 TO: FROM: SUBJECT: School Board Members David W. Christiansen, Ed.D., Deputy Superintendent/Chief of Schools Mark Howard, Chief of Performance Accountability RELEASE OF FY2017 PRELIMINARY SCHOOL AND DISTRICT GRADES On June 28, 2017, the Florida Department of Education (FDOE) released the FY2017 District and School Grades. Student performance on the Florida Standards Assessments (FSA) provides the foundation for these grades, which are based on a school grading system adopted by the State Board of Education. The FY2017 school grading system is based on the percentage of total points earned on several components including achievement, learning gains for all students and for lowest 25% students, high school graduation rates, and acceleration success in middle and high schools. The FY2016 school grading system included a new learning gains model 1. Schools and districts are rated A through F based on a percentage of points earned 2. Schools that did not test at least 95% of students received an I and have been excluded from the analysis that follows. A review of the FY2017 district and school grades for the School District of Palm Beach County (SDPBC) reveals the following: School Grades For FY2017 SDPBC Traditional 3 schools, o 61% overall were rated A or B ; an increase of 6 percentage points from the prior year, o 61% of elementary schools were rated A or B ; an increase of 5 percentage points from the prior year, o 58% of middle schools were rated A or B, o 70% of high schools 4 were rated A or B ; an increase of 12 percentage points from the prior year, 1 Caution should be taken when comparing results from FY2015 to FY2016 as learning gains were not included in the school grading system in FY Grading Scale: A = 62% of points or greater, B = 54% to 61% of points, C = 41% to 53% of points, D = 32% to 40% of points, F = 31% of points or less 3 Traditional schools do not include Charter, Alternative or ESE school types. 4 Two Traditional high schools were reported as incomplete, I at this time The School District of Palm Beach County A Top-Rated District by the Florida Department of Education Since 2005 An Equal Education Opportunity Provider and Employer
