2 WORKSHOPS CEMETERY TOURS THE MUSEUM OFFERS A WIDE VARIETY OF TOURS BOTH AT THE NIAGARA FALLS HISTORY MUSEUM AND THE DRUMMOND HILL CEMETERY, LOCATED A FIVE-MINUTE WALK FROM THE MUSEUM. TOURS ARE CATERED TO THE SPECIFIC CURRICULAR NEEDS OF EACH GRADE ATTENDING. TOURS INTERACTIVE EXHIBITS NIAGARA FALLS MUSEUM TOUR Kindergarten-Grade minutes $3 per student Discover one of Canada s best 1812 collections and dress up like a British soldier. Learn about the history of the world famous Niagara Falls. Explore the needs of this unique community and how having one of the wonders of the world in our backyard has affected the people. BATTLEFIELD TOUR Grades 7, 11, minutes $3 per student Walk in the footsteps of an 1812 soldier on the Lundy s Lane Battlefield located at Drummond Hill Cemetery. Explore such topics as the lay of the land as it was in 1814, the experience of soldiers and civilians, tactics used in the battle, and its aftermath and effects. SELF-GUIDED TOUR Kindergarten Grade 12 $2 per student Come explore the museum independently. Stay as long as you like and move at your own pace. Teachers are welcome to come to the museum ahead of time and plan their own lessons in our galleries. From the famed Laura Secord, to daredevils, and everyday citizens, learn about the people who have lived in Niagara Falls and shaped our community. MUSEUM AND DRUMMOND HILL TOURS 90 minutes $4 per student Combine the best of both worlds! Begin by touring the museum galleries, then walk to the Drummond Hill Cemetery for a tour focusing on the battlefield or the stories of those buried there.

3 EDUCATION PROGRAMMES 1812: UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL Grade minutes Listen to the voices of those affected by the War of Following a gallery tour, students will be divided into small groups and examine primary source materials written by soldiers, officers, First Nations, medical personnel and civilians. They will then prepare a dramatic presentation to illustrate the perspectives of the individuals in their sources. Curriculum Connections: Grade 7 Canada, : Conflict and Challenges THE BRIDGES OF NIAGARA Grades 3, 5, minutes Niagara has been home to many bridges over the years. Discover the science and history behind these local structures and whether or not they withstood the test of time. Students will then be given their own bridge building challenge that fulfills the growing needs of the community. Curriculum Connections: Grade 3 Strong and Stable Structures, Grade 5 Forces Acting on Structures and Mechanisms, Grade 7 Form and Function (Structures) WORLD WAR I Grade minutes Discover the Great War through primary source materials in the museum s collection. Students will explore the museum galleries, analyze photographs and critically assess personal correspondence to immerse themselves in the wartime experience. Curriculum Connections: Grade 10 History since World War I, Grade 12 Canada: History, Identity, and Culture, Grade 12 The West and the World THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD Grades 6, 8 90 minutes Students examine the nature of slavery in the 18th and 19th centuries and the elaborate underground system developed to lead them to freedom. Teams of students will then become characters trying to make it to Niagara in the Underground Railroad Game. Based on actual events, decisions have to be made and consequences abided. This is a game of wit and chance. Curriculum Connections: Grade 6 Communities in Canada, Past and Present, Grade 8 Creating Canada, SPECIAL PROGRAMMES April 9-13, 2018 May 24 & 25, 2018 DISCOVERING KANÁ:TA EXPLORING THE CULTURE AND HISTORY OF THE HAUDENOSAUNEE (SIX NATIONS) Grades 3-5 $10 per student April 9-13, 2018 Offering two workshops 9:30-11:30am OR 12-2pm Join us in welcoming Six Nations of the Grand River community members for a series of interactive workshops. Travel to stations around the museum and engage with Haudenosaunee traditional music and social dance, cultural artefacts and food. Students will develop a better understanding of the interconnected relationships between First Nations and European Settlers. *This programme requires a minimum student registration, please book by March 9, Curriculum Connections: Heritage and Identity, Grade 3 Communities in Canada, , Grade 4 Early Societies, CE, Grade 5 First Nations and Europeans in New France and Early Canada CANADA NEEDS YOU BY MIKE FORD Grades 4-12 $8 per student May 24 & 25, 2018 Two 9:30am-11:30am OR 12-2pm Mike Ford is a bilingual JUNO-nominated solo artist who has released five acclaimed albums of Canadian history-inspired songs. His fast-paced curriculum-focused concerts, always adapted for audience levels, have succeeded in the challenging task of inspiring young people towards greater interest in Canada s past and greater involvement in its present and future. In this performance, Mike Ford takes students on a break-neck tour through First Nations lore, explorers tales, the War of 1812, rebellions, Confederation, and finally skidding to a halt for a decade-by-decade examination of Canada s explosive 20 th Century. Teachers will be provided with a study guide in English and French, to help supplement their experience, and are welcome to make requests for points in Canadian history to be covered. Following the performance students will be given a 45 minute museum tour. 4 MUSEUM DETECTIVES Grades minutes Explore the role museums play in our society and the pieces of history they display. Students are invited to touch and hold history through the exploration of artefacts. They will uncover the stories of these artefacts by working through a set of questions and discover the historical information they contain. Includes a behind the scenes tour of the museum including collections storage, home to over 30,000 artefacts. Curriculum Connections: Promotes Concepts of Social Studies/Historical Thinking - Continuity and Change, Interrelationships and Historical Perspective, gather information from primary sources, and interpret/analyze data. PIECES OF CANADA: 150 May 20 December 31, 2017 To celebrate the 150 th anniversary of Canada as a nation, the Niagara Falls History Museum has gathered 150 objects from the people of our community to tell the story of what it is to be Canadian. Students will explore the objects that the people of Niagara feel tell a story about the country they live in. These are personal stories that collectively tell us something about our nation and our Canadian identity. There is a wide variety of descriptions of transportation, immigration, sports, the military, pop culture and much more. Donors, too, are as diverse as their artefacts, from as young as ten years to as accomplished as the wizened world traveler. April 30 - May 4, 2018 GOING MEDIEVAL Grade 4 $15 per student April 30 - May 4, 2018 from 9:30am 1:30pm Travel back to the Middle Ages with Blackthorn Productions. Students become lords and ladies as they touch and try on medieval armour and clothing, learn an authentic medieval dance, explore medicine and the Black Death and ask their questions of costumed characters. Students will travel to stations throughout the museum to experience the medieval world first hand. *This programme requires a minimum student registration, please book by April 1, Curriculum Connections: Grade 4 Early Societies, 3000BCE-1500CE. To accommodate the new social studies curriculum, teachers will be provided with a Classroom Package containing activities which will connect their student s experiences with that of other ancient civilizations. Collage Rik van Glintenkamp ECHOES IN THE ICE: FINDING FRANKLIN S SHIP January 25 April 22, 2018 Ever since explorers began searching for a Northwest Passage over 400 years ago, the Arctic has been a fascinating and important area of study, rich with drama, adventure, even tragedy. Using artefacts, images, audiovisual presentations, and art, Echoes in the Ice: Finding Franklin s Ship examines Arctic exploration past and present, profiles the explorers involved in the search for the Northwest Passage, and decodes the mysteries of the Franklin Expedition of 1845, when an entire crew vanished in the Arctic during an ill-fated search.

Visa, MasterCard, cash or debit are accepted. Payment is required in full on the day of your trip. CANCELLATIONS Cancellation of a scheduled booking must be received at least two weeks prior to the tour. Cancellations received after this time are subject to a $50 cancellation fee. The cancellation fee will be waived if the tour is rebooked within the month of the cancellation date. ADULT SUPERVISION The museum requires one adult supervisor for every ten students. Adult supervisors within this ratio are granted free admission to the museum. Student behaviour, safety and security are a teachers responsibility. Groups must be supervised at all times.
