1 FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF LAW ENFORCEMENT June 2003
2 Data Collection During the 2002 calendar year, there were approximately 168,500 deaths in Florida. Florida s medical examiners accepted jurisdiction of, investigated, and certified 20,858 of these deaths. There were 15,676 deaths in which autopsies were performed and toxicology tests conducted to identify the presence of drugs. The drug-related death information contained within this report was obtained from toxicology reports submitted by Florida s medical examiners for 5,816 cases. The state s medical examiners were asked to distinguish between the drugs being the cause of death or merely present in the body during the death investigations. Data was collected on the following drugs: Ethyl Alcohol, Benzodiazepine, Cannabinoids, Cocaine, GHB, Heroin, Hydrocodone, Oxycodone, Ketamine, Methadone, Methylated Amphetamines, Nitrous Oxide, Phencyclidine (PCP), and Rohypnol. Report Summary This report continues to provide historical data that has been collected since 1987 on cocaine-related deaths, as well as data that has been collected since 1995 on heroin-related deaths. Some general statewide trends for 2002 when compared to 2001 are listed below. Prescription drugs continued to be found more often at lethal levels (60%) than illegal drugs (40%). Methadone continued its increase of being found in autopsied bodies by 56% from 2001 to 2002, although this figure is less than the dramatic increase from 2000 to 2001 of 71%. Districts with the highest number of methadone-related deaths are Palm Beach (81), Jacksonville (59), St. Petersburg (52), Broward (52), and Pensacola (42). Approximately 25% of all methadone-related deaths occurred in South Florida (Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade counties). The occurrence of hydrocodone increased by 32% in 2002 from last year, while oxycodone had a smaller increase of 10%. Cocaine increased by 18% over last year, placing cocaine at its highest level since it was first tracked in In 2002, Benzodiazepine increased by 18% over last year. Decreases between 2001 and 2002 occurred with five drugs: GHB and methylated amphetamines decreased 32% and 14% respectively, while heroin, cannabinoids, and nitrous oxide showed smaller declines. The occurrence of PCP and rohypnol remained consistent, while ketamine and alcohol occurrences increased slightly MEC Drug Report Page i
