U S D O R G / R O B I N S O N / P I B Team News Progress Reports went home today during 6th hour. Please make sure you are checking Parent/Student Vue for the most up to date grades. Thanksgiving break would be a great time to catch up on any missing work. Remember that there are only 14 days left to the 2nd Nine Weeks, so make sure you do not have any late assignments! Community Service reminder: half of your community service hours are due by Friday December 2. 6th Grade: 10 hours; turn into Ms. Mandelbaum 7th Grade: 10 hours; turn into Ms. Rowley 8th Grade: 12.5 hours; turn into Ms. Rowley Log sheets are available on our team page on the Robinson Website. If the hours are not completed Social Studies grades will be lowered 10%. 8th graders, Ms. Rowley is sending home information tomorrow about the 8th grade shirt. Orders are due by Friday, December 2. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Rowley. The Robinson Science Olympiad needs plastic carbonated beverage bottles, 2-liter in size and smaller. If you could rinse and send them with your student and have them dropped off in room 329 it would be N O V E M B E R 1 8, appreciated. Fear not, they will be recycled when we are done with them. Do you know someone who is interested in applying for Pre-IB next year? Pre-IB Applications for next year will be available! Please see page 6 for all of the details. Students currently in Pre-IB do not need to apply again unless they are removed from the program. Community Service Opportunity Remember you will be allowed to earn up to a maximum of 5 community service hours for participating or supporting the Robinson Community through organized activities. You can earn 1 hour for each Robinson event you attend. No matter how long the event, it counts for 1 hour. Practice and any event happening during the school day does not qualify for community service. If attendance is required for a class, it does not qualify for community service. You must still document on the community service sheet with a signature and a reflection. Also remember that 25 Box Tops for Education = 1 hour and 100 Pop Tabs = 1 hours maximum combination of Box Tops and Pop Tabs is 5 hours. 2 P A G E 2 Sixth Grade PIB Berry Math We will review the fraction operations that we studied before the break. We will use a combination of problem solving using variables and basic skill practice to prepare for a test, probably on Thursday. Next, we will finish the year with decimal operations. Callard -Language Arts This week, we read the short stories The Cat and the Coffee Drinkers, by Max Steele, and Sandra Cisnero s Eleven, as we continue our discussions of narrator s point of view, characterization, theme, and conflict. When we come back from fall break, we will read Mark Twain s dramatic interpretation of The Prince and the Pauper. Also, ask your child to recite the complete list of English helping verbs, which we memorized this week. Next week, we will order our copies of Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol. Student cost will be $1.00 per book, and students will keep their copies. Please send the money ASAP so that we can order by Wednesday. Flores Spanish On Friday, December 2nd, students will take a quiz that will require them to know how to correctly spell all of the vocabulary words from Chapter 1A in their textbooks. A great tool for preparing for this quiz is the quizlet.com website. In the site s search box, please type tktflores and look for my link to Chapter 1A. Mandelbaum Social Studies We will be finishing up the Israelites on Wednesday, November 30 th by taking a test over Chapter 7. We will be doing a chapter review on the 29 th to prepare for the test. After the test we will begin our study of ancient India. Their Egyptian Build-A Book chapter will be due on Friday, December 2 nd. COMMUNITY SERVICE is also due on December 2nd for sixth graders who must turn in ten completed hours. Berry Science Classes will investigate the cycling of matter and energy among living and nonliving parts of an ecosystem. This connects to our last unit in that it continues to stress the idea of conservation of matter. Our emphasis is on describing the flow of energy and on defining the boundaries of a system. Callard -Spanish The kids did a great job on their Primer Dia de Accion de Gracias plays and puppet shows. We will make sure to upload all of the video we took to YouTube when we get back from Thanksgiving break, and we ll provide links. When we return from break, we ll be working on vocabulary development and grammar skills. Mandelbaum Language Arts Next week we will do a shared inquiry story (Kaddo s Wall) to cite evidence and support a claim. We will be doing some shared activities and then a whole class discussion on the story. We will also be learning about the different reasons an author writes. Students will be completing examples of each type of writing with one topic. Marsh Spanish The week after break the 6 th graders will practice spelling their new vocabulary. There will be a quiz on Friday and SPELLING WILL COUNT! Practice on over break will make that week easy and fun! Sinsel Math Math 6+ students will begin a brief review of fractions after the break. Students will also be making new choices in the Life Simulation, including a home purchase!

3 P A G E 3 Seventh Grade PIB Flores Spanish Students will spend all of the week when they come back from Fall Recess working with a partner on a project that compares discrimination in Spanish-speaking countries with discrimination in the United States. This project branches off from the novel that students just finished reading, in which the protagonist from Central America encounters racial discrimination when she goes to live in the United States. Lavacek Language Arts We will continue our study of argument, persuasion, and propaganda. Rowley Social Studies Unfortunately we were not able to complete the Latin America unit before the Thanksgiving break, so we will need to do some review and finish up our first week back. The test over the unit will be on Friday, Dec. 2 nd. Sinsel Math Math 7+ students will finish up the unit on percents and begin a study of probability. Jenney Science The week after Thanksgiving break the seventh graders will be studying evolution. Marsh Spanish The 7 th grade students will begin work on a project on discrimination to tie into the themes of their novel. We will discuss the project on Monday, work in class on the research Tuesday Thursday, and have a fun reward day on Friday (snacks are welcome). Sims Language Arts When we return from Fall Break, we will continue analyzing persuasive texts, techniques, and writing. We ll work with a variety of texts to analyze how writers build effective arguments. After Winter Break, we ll being our study of The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint Exupery. We ll be using the Katherine Woods (original) translation. Scholastic is offering this edition to teachers for $3.00, and students have been asked to purchase a copy so they may annotate it. Students just need to bring $3.00 to me, and I ll place the order. Stroot Math Math 7 Plus students will continue to work with percent. Interest, commission, and percent of error are some of the concepts we will cover. Van Horn Math We will continue working on our percents unit. I am available before school for additional help. Remember all late work is due before we take the test.

Rowley Social Studies Students have spent this week researching for to write about their Constitutional questions. The week of 11/28-12/2 they should be working to write the 500 word essay at home. Rough drafts are due on Friday the 2 nd. We will spend class time back on content: ratification, the Bill of Rights, and Washington s presidency. Sims Language Arts When we return from Fall Break, the eighth graders will continue reading and analyzing To Kill a Mockingbird. Stroot Math Geometry students will perform constructions with a straightedge and a compass and use those constructions to prove triangles congruent. Algebra students will take a test over the absolute value function on Tuesday. Next, students will work on creating linear models with real-world problems. Van Horn Math We will finish working on Topic 10-Absolute Value Equations. We will test on Tuesday, November 29. We will then begin our statistics unit. I am available before school for additional help. Remember all late work is due before we take the test.
