The Independent Schools Association National Art Competition is held annually. It is a wonderful opportunity for schools to showcase their students art and for teachers to share best practice and ideas. All schools are encouraged to enter some of their best pieces. As a forward-thinking and ever-developing organisation, we are pleased to announce that this year there will be several new categories. Please see individual and group categories. The competition is broken down into two sections: 1. The first is the Area Art Competition. This will be organised by your Area Art Representative. Most areas combine the art competition with a Head Teacher s meeting and some areas will organise staff inset training whilst the Art is being judged. 2. The second section is the National Finals which are held in conjunction with the Annual Autumn Study Conference (13 and 14 November 2015). Only the winning entries from across the regions will go to the National competition and they are judged on the Saturday of the conference by an independent adjudicator. Winners will receive book tokens, trophies or certificates. Area Art Competition Area Competitions will be organised by the Arts and Festivals Representative in your ISA Area, either in the Summer Term or in the early part of the Autumn Term, prior to the ISA Autumn Study Conference. The winning entries will go to the National Competition (13 and 14 November 2015). Schools will be sent details of the competition by ISA Head Office and it is the responsibility of Head Teachers to forward this information to their Art teachers. If schools would like further information on the competition or if they would like the dates of their regional competitions they are welcome to contact their Area Art Representative. Please be aware that the art competition is run by head teachers or art staff who have kindly volunteered their time. They are not always available immediately due to teaching commitments but will get back to you if you leave a message. The 2015/2016 ISA Arts and Festivals Representatives are as follows: East Anglia Richard Swift richards@ccss.co.uk London North Mim Clark mimc@hotmail.co.uk London South Hilary Blake head@sacredheartwadhurst.org.uk London West Vicky Smit principal@hurstlodgesch.co.uk National Arts organiser Tel: Midlands Barbara Forster head@ruckleigh.co.uk North Kevin Sartain info@beechhouseschool.co.uk South West Pat Cairns cairnsp@trinityschool.co.uk 2

Entry Fees In the Area Competitions entry fees are at the discretion of each area. The entry fee must be submitted at the same time as the entry form. Area Competition Prizes The entries will be judged in the following manner: First Place Second Place Highly Commended may be offered where the entries in the category are strong Competition prizes are at the discretion of each area. Those schools who attain awards will be issued with a certificate by the Area Representative. National Final Qualification for the National Final is via one of the seven ISA Areas, who each hold their own Area Competitions. Only winning entries then go forward to the National adjudication at the Association s Autumn Study Conference. Schools do not need to attend but do need to ensure that their entries reach the conference in time for hanging. Pieces must be signed in and out of the exhibition room. Schools must ensure that their pieces are collected by the end of the conference. The Association takes no responsibility for entries lost or damaged. It is expected that each school takes responsibility for hanging or placing each entry in, or on, the correct display board or exhibition table. All entries must be clearly labelled on the back with an authentication label confirming that the work is solely that of the student. National Competition Prizes Display certificates will be awarded to all winners and runners-up. The national prizes for 2015 will be announced nearer the time. 3

Details of Art Categories, Competition Rules and Age Groups are as follows: Competition Rules All work submitted should be entered for the age category which applied when the work was produced and should not have been previously submitted. The work should have been produced in the previous 12 months. Each school is responsible for making its own arrangements for transporting artwork to and from the National Competition. Some areas organise transportation but not all. It is the responsibility of the school to ensure that the area organisers have the correct piece to take to Nationals. Collection: the school is also responsible for the collection of the art from the National competition unless other arrangements have been made. If this is the case ISA head office and the Area Art Representative must be informed. Our venue is always a busy conference venue. It should not be assumed that items can be stored before or after the conference. If this facility is required, arrangements should be made directly with the hotel; ISA HQ and the Area Art Representative should be informed but cannot take responsibility for any items left in the care of the venue. Display boards will be provided by ISA. It is the schools responsibility to ensure that each piece has the ability to be displayed and that the correct mounting or hanging mechanism is provided with the piece with instructions if the head teacher is not displaying the item and the Area Coordinator is in charge. Two dimensional work needs to be ready to be mounted on the display boards (usually with Velcro and not in heavy frames). Please make sure that you bring all the relevant materials necessary for your entry to be displayed to its best advantage. Three-dimensional work must either sit securely on the floor or table or the correct display mechanism must be provided. Please note that the exhibition and competition is held in a hotel conference room. It is therefore not feasible to assume that items can be hung from the ceiling or hammered into a wall. Please note actual pieces of 3D work must be submitted, photographs or 3D pieces are not eligible for inclusion in the competition at regional or national level. Please note that the Association will not take responsibility for IT equipment. In the animation section it is necessary for the entered piece to be animated and move. It is very important that any work which you intend to exhibit in the Autumn Term should not be taken home by pupils at the end of the Summer Term. Art Staff must confirm that all work submitted is the students own and if there has been any staff input, and if so, how much. It is also very important that all work is correctly labelled on the back of the exhibit with the details on the entry form, a copy of which is on page 5. Schools should read carefully the definitions of the categories and classes at each level and ensure that items are entered into the correct category and age group. If work is submitted to the wrong category, the competition organiser is authorised to transfer work to the more suitable category, or disqualify it, if it does not meet the guidance given in this handbook. 4

Place this label on the back of your entry. ISA Area: ISA Ref: School: Pupil Name: Year Group: M/F: Category: e.g., 2D Art Title of Piece: Originality Confirmation (Signature of Staff): We understand that the Association and its representatives cannot be held responsible for loss, damage or breakage of this art piece. Should this piece be submitted to Nationals we undertake to be responsible for its arrival and collection. 5

The age groups are: EYFS and Key Stage 1, 2-5 NB Please remember that space is limited and that winning categories must be taken to the Autumn Study Conference! Please also be aware that teachers are responsible for hanging their own work at Area Competitions and Head Teachers have to be capable of hanging/displaying the work at National Conference! 9

ISA Area Art Coordinators Responsibilities To send out details of the Art Competition to all area schools, asking that this information be passed to the Head of Art. Ensure that a suitable venue is provided, with ample car parking to facilitate the delivery and collection of art pieces. Please inform ISA HQ when the regional competition is taking place. It is good practice to insist that your Area entries conform to the national requirements not only in terms of Key Stage categories but by ensuring that all work is labelled on the back at the bottom. Please advise winning entries that 1 st place stickers must be removed before display at National Conference. Remind schools that only winning entries from the Area competitions should go forward to the National Competition and to avoid delivering artwork to the hotel for the National Competition in advance. As soon as possible after the regional art competition, send ISA HQ and the National Art Representative, Vicky Smit (principal@hurstlodgesch.co.uk) a list of winning entries with full details, as National Final Entries must be electronically logged in advance. In some cases where judging is taking place, the Art Coordinator may organise INSET for any Art Teachers who are attending the event. Area Coordinators remain autonomous in their Area organisation and they can decide whether or not a prize is given if there is a limited entry in any category. Area Coordinators may issue a Certificate of Participation to Area entrants. It is suggested that these are left blank for completion by each school. 10

Art Competition Judges Area competitions the Area Coordinator will source a judge and issue guidelines for judging. It is up to the ISA Area treasurer whether there is remuneration for judging. National competition the ISA Head Office will source a Judge for the National Competition; provide display boards and exhibition space for the entries. They will provide Certificates for entrants and will source the competition prizes. The National Art Coordinator Is responsible for ensuring the smooth running of the National Event. They will be available to help Head Teachers mount and place the work and will receive art that has been delivered if the Head Teacher is unable to be there. The National Art Coordinator is available to answer questions from Art teachers and Area representatives. They cannot organise transport of artwork to and from the conference. The ISA Head Office is able to supply a provisional list of Heads from nearby schools that are attending the Conference and might be able to help. The National Art Coordinator will assist the Judge and prepare the score sheets to be presented to conference. They may be asked to speak and introduce the prizes at conference. Please contact Karen Goddard at ISA HQ executive.assistant@isaschools.org.uk if you require a specimen page of labels, or contact Vicky Smit if you have any questions regarding the National competition her address is: principal@hurstlodgesch.co.uk. Questions regarding the Area competition should go to your Area Coordinator. 11
