3 District of Columbia Public Schools EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Mackin has prepared this executive summary to highlight the improvements made during the library infusion at the end of FY 13. The report focuses primarily on the areas of collection size and collection age. Please refer to the comparison data on the following pages for the District of Columbia School Library collections. Future budgetary considerations are also included under recommendations. Collection Size Current Size Size Prior to Infusion Increase 18 items per student K-12 overall items per student K-12 overall 3 books per student K-12 overall items per student Elementary 18 items per student Elementary 2 books per elementary student items per students Secondary 9 items per student Secondary 6 books per high school student Note: Items per Student (IPS.) The national average¹ is IPS and is recommended as your Goal Collection Size. Improvements: The secondary schools show considerable improvement and currently are at IPS, an increase in 6 books per student across DCPS. Collection Age Current Average Age Average Age Prior to Infusion Increase 14 years old K-12 Average Copyright 17 years old K-12 Average Copyright 3 years newer across K-12 years old - Elementary 16 years old - Elementary 1 year newer at Elementary 4 years old Secondary 19 years old Secondary years newer at Secondary Improvements: The secondary schools again show considerable improvement. Prior to infusion, books on average were far OLDER than the students at the middle and high schools. Currently, these schools have titles averaging 4 year old copyright dates with current information for research. 2

4 Recommendations 1. Overall your analysis indicates a current shortage of 322,280 items for your district. Part of that need is to reach the Items/Student goal at every school. The remainder is necessary to balance the collections throughout the content areas. For budgeting purposes, if the additional 322,280 titles were to be purchased to reach the balanced collection distributions, it would cost approximately $6.2 million.² 2. Secondary schools show a huge transformation over the last year. Most of the secondary schools are now current with their material. However, 24 schools need additional numbers to meet the books/student goal. 3. Elementary schools continue to show need for enhancement. Only one elementary school has a copyright average within the last years. Most elementary schools have an average collection years or older. This average age is significantly older than the students at these schools. Furthermore, 38 elementary schools are below the books/student goal. 1National Center for Education Statistics, Based on average prices as compiled by School Library Journal, we currently use $19.38 as an overall average price per title for budgeting purposes. Mackin prices are typically discounted and do not necessarily reflect this amount. 3
