Join us as we honor the hard work and dedication of our school administrators over the next month. The district held its reception for the 2019 Teacher of the Year representatives of each school on Wednesday, October 25, 2017 at the Savannah Morning News Auditorium. The reception was co-sponsored by Savannah Morning News and WJCL. Shannon Royster, anchor at WJCL and Susan Catron, Editor of SMN, served as MCs of the event. Superintendent Ann Levett and Board members Jolene Byrne, Julie Wade, Connie Hall, Shawn Kachmar, Irene Hines, Larry Lower, and Ruby Jones greeted each school's Teacher of the Year. The following teachers were selected as finalists and will move on to compete for the title of District Teacher of the Year: Myria Shipman, Islands High School (shown below); Kiwonda Riley, Johnson High School; Nicole Wofford Dillon, Oglethorpe Charter School; Laura Sebastian Hooks, West Chatham Middle School; and Christopher Lyon, Largo-Tibet Elementary School. The Teacher of the Year Gala will be held February 23, 2018 at the Westin Hotel. Congratulations to each finalist and to all honorees! SCCPSS Principals' Month is your opportunity to say thank you to principals and assistant principals in our district and to share with our community all the great things that principals and assistant principals do. 2 THE BEACON PAGE 2 ` SCCPSS Students Place at the 3 rd Annual Global Case- Competition at Savannah State University Global Business Case Competition (GBCC) is an annual case competition that brings together undergraduate College of Business Administration (COBA) students to compete in a fast-paced and challenging business case study. The GBCC program provides students a chance to build relationships, and participate in a real-world case study to analyze and develop a business recommendation within 96 hours. This world class competition highlights the strategic challenges and managerial dilemmas faced by global business leaders. Competing teams work under pressure to solve a real business problem, using simulated business conditions such as time-critical deadlines and incomplete information, to formulate workable, action-oriented recommendations. This year, several Savannah Chatham County Public School System (SCCPSS) students from Savannah High School, Johnson High School, Groves High School and Savannah Early College were allowed to compete also. Congratulations to all of the students and teams. Paler, Early College WHAT S THE HOUR CODE? Did you know that computing is the #1 source of wages in the wages in the U.S.? There are more than 500,000 computing jobs open nationwide, but last year only 42, 969 computer science students graduated into the workforce. That is why we are promoting the Hour of Code. What is the Hour of Code? The Hour of Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify "code", to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. It has since become a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science, starting with 1-hour coding activities but expanding to all sorts of community efforts. This grassroots campaign is supported by over 400 partners and 200,000 educators worldwide. When is the Hour of Code? The Hour of Code takes place each year during Computer Science Education Week. The 2017 Computer Science Education Week will be December 4-10, but you can host an Hour of Code all year round. Computer Science Education Week is held annually in recognition of the birthday of computing pioneer Admiral Grace Murray Hopper (December 9, 1906).For more information on how to participate in Hour of Code, check out hourofcode.com/us.

The challenge was to write a poem that celebrates the works of this year s featured authors. Thank you to everyone who participated this year! We had 214 submissions from 18 different schools, plus homeschoolers. Chatham, Effingham, and Liberty Counties were represented. (In previous years, this was known as National Eating Healthy Day.) Throughout the month, we will support our students, families, and staff to take simple steps to eat healthier. Celebrating Eat Smart Month can be fun and easy! Check out for a complete toolkit of materials and how-to information on healthy eating and physical activity.

4 THE BEACON PAGE 4 SCCPSS SECONDARY COUNSELORS PLAN TO HOST APPLY FOR COLLEGE MONTH Governor Nathan Deal has proclaimed November as Georgia Apply to College (GAC) Month and The Secondary Counselors invite you to its Post- Secondary Day events. These events are designed to increase the number of graduating seniors who apply to a two or four year college/university, the military or an employment opportunity. Studies show that along with a college degree, students gain advantages in terms of income, health and community involvement. Each event will feature opportunities to assist students in completing college, military or employment applications, complete the Free Application for Federal Aid (FAFSA). Additionally, representatives from various colleges, branches of the military and employers will be on site to assist students. List of events: Sol C.
