3 Background Information Judgemeadow Community College is a multicultural college with over 1200 students, situated in a new state-of-the-art school building on a 65 acre site in Evington, on the outskirts of the city of Leicester. We are a high achieving specialist Language College recently judged to be Good with outstanding features by Ofsted. Judgemeadow is an innovative and entrepreneurial school that enjoys an excellent reputation in the local community and is over subscribed. The Ofsted Verdict In April 2013, Judgemeadow had a full Ofsted inspection under the new tougher regulations and was judged Good with outstanding features. Quotes from the Report include: All groups of students achieve well. They enjoy their learning and are keen to do well. Students behaviour is exemplary, both in lessons and around the school. The principal, senior team and governing body take a strong lead in driving improvement,.. good training and support where it is needed, maintain the quality of classroom practice. Centre of Excellence for Languages and Internationalism The College gained Specialist School status in September 1999 as a Centre of Excellence for Modern Languages and Internationalism. Judgemeadow has achieved the Full International School Award. This is only awarded to schools which have an international ethos embedded throughout the school and have curriculum based international work across a range of subjects. Impressive Exam Results The key standard used by the government to judge a school s success is the number of students gaining 5 or more subjects, including English and Maths, at grade A*, A, B or C in their GCSE exams. In the summer 2013 exams 70% of Judgemeadow Year 11 students reached or exceeded this standard our best ever results! By comparison, the most recent published results for Leicester and for England (2012) were 51.5% and 58.8% respectively. There were also some excellent individual student results we were delighted that 4 of our very able students achieved 10 A* grades. 32% of our students achieved at least 3 A or A* grades. Boys and girls did equally well. In addition, using the measure known as the English Baccalaureate, 44% of Judgemeadow students achieved the required level, well above the national average of 18%. To achieve the English Baccalaureate certificate students need a C grade or better across a core of academic subjects English, Mathematics, History or Geography, the Sciences and a Language. Awards and Accreditations The College has been named as one of the first 20 Lead Behaviour Schools with exemplary behaviour. Lead Behaviour Schools have proven expertise in behaviour management and the promotion of positive pupil behaviour in their school. Judgemeadow was awarded 'Investors in People' status in This has been reconfirmed at regular 'IIP health checks'. We were also delighted to achieve National Healthy School Status for our principles of developing healthy bodies, healthy minds and healthy attitudes. We have recently been successful in achieving the British Dyslexia Association Dyslexia Friendly Quality Mark award for the school, the BDA s sign of approval of a dyslexia friendly organisation. 4 Mathematics Department Second in Department - Mathematics The department is staffed by seven full-time and two part-time teachers of mathematics. Support is given in certain classes by our maths specialist teaching assistant. The department is a friendly and interesting place to work. Staff support each other and share ideas and resources. There is a shared ethos of maximizing student achievement. Mathematics is taught in setted groups with schemes of work facilitating ease of movement between groups if required. For continuity, any one group will be taught by the same member of staff during years 9, 10 and 11. To enable learning difficulties to be addressed, the sets are arranged to give fewer pupils in the lower groups. In years 7 to 9, a course based on the Key Stage 3 Maths Strategy has been used to develop very detailed schemes of work. This is supplemented by additional topics to give a broad and balanced mathematical education. In years 10 and 11 the GCSE AQA Syllabus A is followed and, again, a very detailed scheme of work is available. All pupils have termly assessments which produce a grade or level; these are used to monitor progress. The department is also developing Assessment for Learning. The department enjoys considerable exam success, with over 78% of our year 11 students obtaining a grade C or better in This firmly places us as one of the highest achieving schools in Leicester City. In the Year 9 SATs exam last year 83% of students obtained a level 5 or above, 66% obtained a level 6 or above. Our Year 11 Fast Track group have achieved superb results after being entered for their final exam in November The set achieved 20 grade A* and 11 grade A. A comprehensive handbook providing detailed information on all aspects of the department's methods / ethos is available for each member of the department.

5 Job Description Second in Mathematics Department Job Title: Second in Mathematics Department Grade: Common Pay Spine plus TLR 2b Responsible to: The Head of Mathematics Responsible for: N.A. General Responsibilities Staff should contribute to the smooth running of the school by following procedures outlined in the staff handbook. To carry out a share of school supervisory duties in accordance with published rotas. Responsibilities of Teachers as Members of the Pastoral Organisation All teachers are members of a pastoral team responsible for either a tutor group, a Year group or a Key Stage. The pastoral system is designed to create a structured, caring framework to support the learning of all pupils. All staff are concerned, throughout the day, with the welfare and safety of pupils. It is the responsibility of tutors: 1. To be aware of and actively encourage the general welfare and progress of their tutor group. 2. To provide individual support and guidance. 3. To register pupils at the start of each session in accordance with printed instructions and the School's procedure. 4. To ensure the register is maintained accurately, in accordance with the College's procedure, and arrange that it is returned to the office as soon as possible. 5. To request and collect absence notes from pupils. 6. To monitor attendance and punctuality and deal, in the first instance with any problems which arise. To consult the Head of Year promptly when the interests of the individual require this. 7. To accompany their form to assembly. 8. To attend tutor meetings and any other year meetings/parents meetings appropriate to this work. 9. To help pupils establish and maintain a regular programme of homework and remind them to hand homework in as a matter of course. 10. To proof read/collate all reports and to write a general form report. 11. To provide data and information regarding the tutor group when necessary. 12. To liaise closely with the Head of Year.

6 Responsibilities of all Teachers as Members of the Mathematics Department. 1. To teach throughout the whole ability range at Key Stage To be familiar with, and actively support the aims of the department. 3. To work as a member of the department team. 4. Assist in the preparation of resources, materials and policies. 5. Ensure that the teaching area is kept in good order and that displays are of good quality and updated regularly. 6. Participate in department meetings and other meetings with colleagues and parents. 7. Set/mark/record appropriate work/homework for pupils. 8. Maintain records of pupil attendance, teaching, pupil progress and attainment as outlined in the staff handbook and as required by department policy. 9. Write subject reports and interim reports as required. 10. Liaise closely with the Head of Department. Notes: 1. 7 TLR POST TITLE TLR LEVEL TLR VALUE Second in the Maths Department 2 b 4,268 PA STATUS OF THE POST This is a Middle Leadership post within the college s revised TLR structure. The postholder is accountable to the Head of Maths. MAIN PURPOSE OF THE POST In addition to the professional responsibilities, which are common to all classroom teachers within the school the postholder s key accountability will be: To lead curriculum development within Key Stage three (KS3) To ensure that assessment and recording practices for KS3 students are in line with department/ college policy. To ensure that department s assessment practice directly supports the achievement of all KS3 students. PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES The postholder will be required to exercise his/her professional skills and judgment to carry out, in a collaborative manner, the professional duties set out below: - Making an impact on the educational progress of pupils beyond those directly assigned Monitor that Key Stage 3 students achievement is in line with department/college expectations and take appropriate action when necessary To ensure that assessment practice meets the needs of our SEN, Gifted & Talented, and EAL students Lead the development of Assessment for Learning within the Key Stage Contribute to relevant sections of the department s SEF and improvement plan. Liaise with all colleagues within the department to ensure assessment continuity and progression from KS2 to end of KS3. To organise primary liaison activities and arrange the bridging unit work for year 7 students To ensure that Key Stage 3 assessments are prepared and reviewed in line with department policy To ensure that student resources are developed and shared amongst all staff To ensure that they Key Stage 3 SoW is regularly reviewed and updated as necessary Leading, Developing and enhancing the Teaching Practice of others With support from the Head of Department provide appropriate CPD opportunities for staff teaching KS3 maths. To organise and support INSET to encourage the teaching of maths using interactive white boards and other forms of ICT at Key Stage 3.
