The Ministry of Education officials state that 7, 085 schools can hardly acmmodate approximately 5,000,000 school children nation -wide. Therefore, it is the Ministry's desire and vision to increase the number of schools substantially in the next 5 years, to serve the kids currently enrolled in school and to provide educational opportunities for those who plan to attend shool in the future. The Ministry of Education officials stated that currently, they have 101,558 teachers, who teach Primary, Senday and High Schools around the untry. Out of 101,558 teachers, 83,000 are officially certified teachers and the remainder 18,558 are temporary teachers. There is a shortage of at least 100,000 teachers this year (2004). The Ministry is working vigorously to hire qualified teachers, and it highly remmends teachers' training and advocates for quality education. The statistics show that the enrollment of girls is low in several provinces, particularly in Zabul, which has only 518 female students. The values reported by the World Bank for these provinces are: Balkh 71%, Kandahar 38 %, Khost 42% and Noristan 35% which we have used in this report.
