3 Notes Data was extracted from CRIS MIS on 14/07/2016 for the two-year period 01/01/2014 to 31/12/2015 Data is a count of victims where there exists on the record a flag that indicates Domestic Abuse. Note that there are an additional 592 victims that have not been included in the tables presented because they were flagged as 'Corporate Victims', i.e. a business, and therefore cannot have an ethnicity, age or gender. The age of the victim has been grouped to aid clarity in the data presentation. All victims under the age of 16 have been placed into one group - this is because by definition, Domestic Abuse victims have to be aged 16 or over. The existence of victims under the age of 16 can be explained by the fact that a) the domestic abuse flag is applied to the whole crime record and b) multiple victims can be recorded on the same crime record. Therefore, imagine a situation where Adult A commits Domestic Abuse GBH to Adult victim B, in front of B's two children (C and D) who are upset by what they have seen, it is perfectly natural that the two children are recorded as victims in the crime. Since a DA flag has been added to the crime record due to the GBH between A and B, any victim query will also return the child victims (C and D) as they are on a DA flagged record. However, they are not direct victims of the DA component of the crime. This is the most likely reason for the existence of underage victims, though a manual read of every record would need to be performed to accurately explain all the victims who appear underage. The rest of the victims have been grouped into 10 year age groups. Police forces in the United Kingdom are routinely required to provide crime statistics to government bodies and the recording criteria is set nationally. However, the systems used for recording these figures are not generic, nor are the procedures used locally in capturing the crime data.
