2 Enrolment Pack 2018 Our focus: At HDA we strongly suggest all students be trained in classical ballet. This is without a doubt the main focus at our Academy. We do offer other dance styles and encourage versatility, however we recommend continued involvement with ballet as we feel it provides the essential technical foundation to any dancer s training. We feel ballet training gives students a basic movement vocabulary that is essential for other styles. For ongoing training at HDA, ballet is necessary to avoid students falling behind significantly in our program. Dance Styles Offered: Classical Studying classical ballet develops poise, confidence, coordination, and discipline. Very young dancers attend lessons once a week. Students from Primary (usually age 6) to Grade 5 must attend 2 ballet lessons per week. Vocational Level ballet students must attend a minimum of 3 ballet lessons per week. We teach the classical technique of the world-renowned Royal Academy of Dance syllabus. Students are prepared for RAD examinations at the discretion of the teachers. Contemporary This style provides an extension to the classical technique and students must be enrolled in ballet classes to qualify for training in contemporary at HDA. Emphasis is on technique, movement qualities, and expressiveness. Students explore use of alignment, gravity, contraction, release and suspension. Most students opt to join this class when they are old enough. Jazz Jazz dance is fast, fun, upbeat, and utilises a variety of popular music. Not only is it a good workout but it also provides students with good musicality, enhanced flexibility, and the ability to think/learn quickly. 6 Annual Concert Each year in early December we put on a large production at The Arts Centre Gold Coast to showcase the students achievements throughout the year. Each class learns a routine and all students are involved. This is definitely the highlight of the entire year students are given the opportunity to wear costumes/stage makeup and feel like real professional dancers! Our productions are not just your basic year-end recital we strive to go above and beyond to produce exceptional quality shows that incorporate all dance styles, utilize state-of-the-art lighting, special effects, professional scenery, and multimedia elements. Tickets are sold directly through The Arts Centre Gold Coast Box Office or online. They generally go on sale in early November. Just before the concert we will host a professional photo shoot to capture each group dance, as well as take individual shots. Pictures are then available to purchase directly from the photographer. More info about this will be sent to parents closer to concert time. 3-4 weeks prior to the concert, all students must be available for rehearsal and other concert preparations on Sundays. Concert/Costume Deposits: There is a place on the enrolment form to indicate if you are able to pay an additional $30.00 each term that will be held by HDA as a deposit towards the additional expenses associated with concert participation at the end of the year. This really helps us to accumulate funds to start sourcing costumes in advance. Most families pay these deposits and enjoy receiving a smaller concert/costume invoice at the end of the year. What discounts are available? Students enrolled in all 3 dance genres (ballet/contemporary/jazz) get a 50% discount off jazz tuition. Are missed lessons refundable? No, however prior arrangements may be made for exceptional cases such as serious illness. In Terms 1 & 2 we allow students to attend a lesson of the same genre/level as a makeup class, but only when suitable and prior arrangements must be made with Miss Andrea. This is not possible during Term 3 & 4 as it becomes disruptive to concert preparations. If dropping a class mid-term, the remaining fees for that term are non-refundable.

8 Other information for HDA dancers and families: Electronic Communication: HDA communicates with its dance families via and it is the responsibility of parents to ensure they have provided correct, legible and up to date addresses on enrolment forms for correspondence and invoices. Arriving/Departing the studio: Students should arrive at least minutes prior to the start of their class whenever possible and should be picked up promptly after class. For the safety of all students, PARENTS MUST COME INSIDE TO COLLECT STUDENTS AFTER CLASS. The waiting area, stairwell and areas outside are unsupervised. For safety purposes students are not to go down the stairs by themselves, and must not wait anywhere in the stairwell or outside to be picked up. In the studios: Absolutely no food or drinks allowed, except water, and no gum chewing in class. Students are encouraged to bring their own (labelled) water bottles to class. Teachers will advise appropriate times to drink. Water bottles must not be left at the dance studio or they will be discarded. Glasses and mugs in our kitchenette area are not for student use. Please remove all outdoor footwear prior to entering the dance studio space. Dance bags are to be left neatly in the reception area and should not be taken into classes. Students are expected to pick up after themselves and be respectful of the studio premises. Parent Viewing: Parents are invited to watch lessons during the last week of terms 1 & 2. You will be notified of exact dates by . In the case of very young students who are quite shy, we can allow parents into the studio if absolutely necessary until such time as they are more confident to participate on their own. Please remember to remove all outdoor footwear prior to entering the dance studio space. Warm-Up: A proper warm up before a class or performance is essential in order to prepare the body and mind for the activity to come. In doing so you reduce the risk of injury and improve the quality of performance. Older students are expected to do their own pre-class warm-up. Absence from Class: Regular attendance is expected of all students. If a student will be missing from a class it is their (or their guardian s) responsibility to inform the instructors of each absence in writing with as much notice as possible. In last minute situations, a text is a kind courtesy and keeps us from worrying. Respect and Behaviour: Students are expected to treat each other and their instructors with the utmost respect, as they, in turn, will do the same to you. Students behaviour will be constantly monitored and if deemed unacceptable by instructors the student will not be permitted to continue the class. Lost and Found: All students must take full responsibility for any personal items brought to the dance studio. The staff at HDA will not be responsible for any lost or stolen items. All lost and found items will be donated or discarded if unclaimed in a timely manner. Questions and Concerns: All instructors at HDA are educated and experienced in teaching dance to children. However, we also know that nobody knows a child better than his/her parent. If at any time any questions arise, please do not hesitate to discuss them with us. We ask that you try to do this during non-teaching hours so that we may give you our full attention without taking away from another child s class. Please call (or ) Miss Andrea weekdays before 2pm.
