1 Aviano Elementary School Weekly Update 2-6 December First Bell Rings: 0755 School Hours DSN: Bus Office: School Action Line: PTA School Website: Important Dates: DECEMBER 23 December 3 January WINTER RECESS (School resumes 6 January) Save the Dates: March 10-14, 2014 Each year in DoDEA, students in grades 3-9 participate in the system wide standardized TerraNova Multiple Assessments. Different types of standardized tests have different purposes. Standardized achievement tests measure how much students have already learned about a school subject. The results from these tests can help teachers develop programs that suit students achievement levels in each subject area, such as reading, math, language skills or science. Please do not schedule family vacations and medical appointments during this week. Please remember to notify the school office of all student absences. Thank you Changing plans after school In order to ensure the safety of our students we must strictly adhere to the handbook policy for changing the dismissal of a student. The policy states: For the safety of your children, we ask that you request any changes in transportation in PERSON or send a NOTE to the school for his/her teacher. We will accept s to the office before 2:00 pm (trans.aviano@eu.dodea.edu) for emergency situations. The office will no longer accept phone calls changing student s routines for dismissal. Early Release of Students If your student has an appointment or is being picked up during the school day, the appropriate procedure is to come to the school office and sign your student out. The office will call your student out of class to the office when parents are present to sign them out. Please do not ask the office to call students down beforehand. Notification of PCS for students Please notify the office if you are PCSing. If you do not have a final day of attendance but know the time frame of the PCS please let us know anyway as soon as possible, so we can add your child/ren to the departure list, inform teachers, and start the preparation process. We will however eventually need a copy of the sponsor s PCS orders and an actual final date of attendance. A complete set of your children s records will be prepared for hand carrying. Records will need to be signed for and picked up by parents on that final day of attendance between

3 The fourth graders will perform the Christmas play "The Jingle Bell Jukebox: The Flip Side" for the school on Thursday, Dec. 5th at 6:00 pm in the MPR (4 th graders please be at school by 5:30pm). There will be a school day performance also at 9:15 am on the 6 th of Dec in the MPR. We hope you'll be able to see it! Be Observant-Eagle Eyes Eagle Eyes is an Air Force-wide program for deterring terrorism and crime by recognizing and reporting suspicious activities essentially a neighborhood watch for on and off-base communities. Many criminal acts are preceded by observable activities. When you know what to look for and how to report suspicious activity, these acts can be prevented. Accompany your child to the bus stop and be observant. Know who is usually at the bus stop and who does not belong. If it doesn't look right to you, there is a good chance it isn't. If you see a suspicious person or vehicle, notify Eagle Eyes ( EYES) immediately and provide as many details as possible, especially the license plate. You never know when your call will make a difference!
