1 Math Prep Session The math assessment has three levels: Arithmetic, Elementary Algebra, and College Level Math. The test is a computerized assessment test designed by the College Board. At CCC, students start at the Elementary Algebra question level. If you are doing well with those types of questions, the questions will progress to higher levels and then take the College Level math assessment. If you do not do very well with the algebra questions, you will be given the arithmetic assessment. Everyone s test is slightly different depending on how you answer the questions. Questions are multiple choice. Calculators are not allowed, although on some problems a calculator may pop up for your use. There is not a time limit. Math Course Levels at CCC you may place into: Level 1: MATH 0960 Prealgebra (noncredit course to build arithmetic and some very basic algebra skills and concepts) Level 1b: MATH 0860 Basic Math Review faster option than the full Prealgebra course (meets week prior to semester start; in place of taking full semester 0960; students passing this can take MATH 0980 or 0970 when semester starts) (noncredit) Level : MATH 0980 Beginning Algebra (noncredit course to help build algebra skills; meets prereq. for 115 and 10 as well as any 1100 level math course) MATH 0970 Quantitative Reasoning (noncredit course to help build quantitative reasoning skills; group problem-solving; focuses on mathematics in everyday civics, health and finance; for students not planning to take 115 or 10 (algebra/trig); meets prereq for 1100 level courses NOT for 115 or 10) Level : MATH 115 level (may also choose from: MATH 1110,110,110,1140, 1150,or 10; choice depends on goals/program/interests) Level 4: MATH 1411 Elementary Functions I or Math 110 Elementary Statistics (or MATH 1510-Fundamentals of Calculus) Level 5: MATH 141 Precalculus Level 6: MATH 1610 Calculus I [We have several courses above Calculus I for those wanting to pursue higher mathematics.] Where Can I Get More Practice or Help? 3 Arithmetic Test Level - You will be sent to this test if your score on the Elementary Algebra is on the low end. This test measures your ability to perform basic arithmetic operations and to solve problems that involve fundamental arithmetic concepts. There are 17 questions on the Arithmetic tests, divided into three types. Operations with whole numbers and fractions: Topics included in this category are addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, recognizing equivalent fractions and mixed numbers, and estimating. Operations with decimals and percents: Topics include addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with decimals. Percent problems,recognition of decimals, fraction and percent equivalencies, and problems involving estimation are also given. Applications and problem solving: Topics include rate, percent and measurement problems; simple geometry problems; and distribution of a quantity into its fractional parts. Operations with algebraic expressions using evaluation of simple formulas and expressions, and adding and subtracting monomials and polynomials. Questions also involve multiplying and dividing monomials and polynomials, the evaluation of positive rational roots and exponents, simplifying algebraic fractions, and factoring. Translating written phrases into algebraic expressions and solving equations, inequalities, word problems, linear equations and inequalities, quadratic equations (by factoring), and verbal problems presented in an algebraic context.
