Figure 1 Voluntary Support of Higher Education by Source, 2013 Other Organizations $3.20 (9.5%) Corporations $5.10 (15.1%) Total Support $33.8 Billion Religious Organizations $0.30 (0.9%) $9.00 (26.6%) Higher Education National Estimates Findings, 2013 Contributions to colleges and universities in the United States rose 9 percent in 2013, to $33.80 billion, according to the annual Voluntary Support of Education (VSE) survey conducted by the Council for Aid to Education. The total is the highest recorded in the history of the survey. In 2009, voluntary support fell from $31.60 billion, which was then the historical high, to $27.85 billion. Giving to higher education institutions gradually recovered from that loss, reaching the 2013 high point. Voluntary Support by Source, 2013 and nonalumni individuals together contributed 44.9 percent of the 2013 gifts. All organization types combined contributed 55.1 percent. Foundations were responsible for 29.6 percent of the 2013 contributions, more than any other single donor type. contributed almost as much as foundations 26.6 percent. Hackley School received one gift of $49.27 million from a grandparent, which affected the 2013 average. Findings, 2013 Contributions to the core group of 128 precollege institutions that responded to the 2012 and 2013 VSE surveys increased 22.4 percent. The average amount raised per responding institution increased 18.3 percent. One institution, Hackley School, received a $49.27 million contribution that had a strong effect on the 2013 data. Without that contribution, contributions to the core group of precollege institutions increased 16.1 percent. Voluntary Support by Source, 2013, parents, and foundations contributed 83.3 percent of the funds raised by precollege survey respondents. Contributions from grandparents increased percent in the core group of responding institutions. The $49.27 million gift to Hackley School was from a grandparent. Corporate support increased 19 percent after falling in Contributions from individuals who are not affiliated with the school as alumni, parents, or grandparents, declined 1.2 percent. Contributions from religious organizations also declined, but such contributions represent less than 1 percent of total support to the responding institutions. 24 VSE 2013
