1 ALGEBRA I Grade: 9-12 MA1A1A / MA1A1B Credit: 1 The focus of Algebra I is to develop in the students the ability to work with linear functions and quadratic functions. The student will use these functions to develop relationships among the different types of functions and to understand the attributes of the function. The student will analyze functions graphically, verbally, numerically, and symbolically. Included in the Algebra course is a study of the attributes and properties of polynomials, exponents, irrational numbers, inequalities and square roots and their connection to functions. The use of the graphing calculator is a major component in the teaching of this course. ALGEBRA I PRE-AP/IB (Lowery Freshman Center Only) Grade: 9 MA2A1A / MA2A1B Credit: 1 Excellent study habits are imperative. The Pre-AP Algebra I will extend the concepts taught in Algebra I by taking the student to a more in-depth study of the subject. The student should have good critical thinking skills and be an independent thinker. Strong mathematic skills and excellent study habits are required. The use of the graphing calculator is a major component in the teaching of this course. GEOMETRY Grade: 9-12 MA1GEA / MA1GEB Credit: 1 Prerequisite: Algebra I Geometry is designed to develop an understanding of the basic structure of plane and spatial geometry. Students will develop the ability to analyze geometric relationships, make and verify conjectures, apply logical reasoning to justify and prove mathematical statements, and use a variety of representations to describe geometric relationships and solve problems. This course allows students to apply algebraic skills in a logical and concrete manner. GEOMETRY PRE-AP/IB Grade: 9-12 MA2GEA / MA2GEB Credit: 1 Prerequisite: Algebra I or Algebra I Pre-AP This course takes all of the goals of the regular Geometry course and further explores the content with an emphasis on problem solving in a multi-step format. Strategies and testing using the AP and IB formats are alternated with the intent of preparing students to enter our AP upper mathematics program or our IB program of mathematics. ALGEBRAIC REASONING Grade: MA1ARA/ MA1ARB Credit: 1 Students will continue with the development of mathematical reasoning related to algebraic understandings and processes, and deepen a foundation for studies in subsequent mathematics courses. Students will broaden their knowledge of functions and relationships, including linear, quadratic, square root, rational, cubic, cube root, exponential, absolute value, and logarithmic functions. Students will study these functions through analysis and application that includes explorations of patterns and structure, number and algebraic methods, and modeling from data using tools that build to workforce and college readiness such as probes, measurement tools, and software tools, including spreadsheets. 2 STATISTICS Grade: MA1STA / MA1STB Credit: 1 (May be taken concurrently.) In this course, students will work with statistical measures of central tendency and spread, methods of data collection, probability, binomial and normal distributions, hypothesis testing and confidence intervals. Students will use multiple representations to present data including oral presentations, written descriptions, numerical statistics, formulas, and graphs. The use of a graphing calculator is a major component of this course. FINANCIAL MATHEMATICS Grade: BM1FIA / BM1FIB Credit: 1 Financial Mathematics is a course about personal money management. Students will apply critical-thinking skills to analyze personal financial decisions based on current and projected economic factors. Financial Mathematics will integrate career and postsecondary education planning into financial decision making. This course satisfies a high school mathematics graduation requirement. ALGEBRA II Grade: MA1A2A / MA1A2B Credit: 1 This course allows students to continue their study of algebraic concepts that began in Algebra I and applied in Geometry in order to better understand the connections between them with the purpose of understanding the structure of Algebra and its connections to Geometry. The study of functions, equations and their relationships is central to all of mathematics and further pursued in this course. Students continually use problem-solving, language and communication, and reasoning to make these connections within and outside of mathematics. ALGEBRA II PRE-AP/IB Grade: 9-12 MA2A2A / MA2A2B Credit: 1 or Algebra I Pre-AP and Geometry Pre-AP/IB Algebra II Pre-AP/IB covers the same topics as Algebra II, with an increased emphasis on complex problems, applications and higher level thinking skills. The content goes deeper into understanding each of the topics and being able to apply and justify in a multi-step format. ADVANCED QUANTITATIVE REASONING Grade: 12 MA1QRA / MA1QRB Credit: 1 In Advanced Quantitative Reasoning (AQR), students continue to build upon their Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II foundations as they expand their understanding through further mathematical experiences. AQR includes the analysis of information using statistical methods and probability, modeling change and mathematical relationships, and spatial and geometric modeling for mathematical reasoning. Students learn to become critical consumers of real-world quantitative data, developing critical skills for success in college and future careers. PRE-CALCULUS Grade: MA1PCA / MA1PCB Credit: 1 Pre-Calculus allows students to use symbolic reasoning and analytical methods to represent mathematical situations, to express generalizations and to study mathematical concepts and the relationships among them. Students use functions, equations and limits as useful tools for expressing generalizations and as means for analyzing and understanding mathematical relationships. Page 2 of 5 Revised 1/18/2017

3 PRE-CALCULUS PRE-AP Grade: MA2PCA / MA2PCB Credit: 1 Pre-Calculus Pre-AP is designed to prepare students for successful completion of AP Calculus (AB or BC) as well as the AP Calculus Exam. In comparison to on-level Pre-Calculus, the curriculum has more depth, is more rigorous, and is taught at a faster pace. Usage of formula charts is not allowed on the AP Calculus College Board Exam; therefore Pre-Calculus Pre-AP does not allow formula charts as part of the curriculum. PRE-CALCULUS (Collin College Dual Credit) Grade: MA5CAA / MA5CAB Credit: 1 Required: Collin College Acceptance BOTH courses must be taken (.5 credit each) Dual Credit with Collin College; see Collin College Admissions Policy Students will fulfill the TEKS for Pre-Calculus and the Collin College requirements for College Algebra, Math1314 (3 college credit hours) and Plane Trigonometry, Math 1316 (3 college credit hours). (CC Description) IB MATH STUDIES (Open Enrollment) Grade: MA4MSA/MA4MSB Credit: 1 The IB mathematical studies standard level (SL) course focuses on important interconnected mathematical topics. This course focuses on student understanding of fundamental concepts, developing students mathematical reasoning, and solving mathematical problems embedded in a wide range of contexts. There is an emphasis on applications of mathematics and statistical techniques. It is designed to offer students with varied mathematical backgrounds and abilities the opportunity to learn important concepts and techniques and to gain an understanding of a wide variety of mathematical topics, preparing them to solve problems in a variety of settings, develop more sophisticated mathematical reasoning and enhance their critical thinking. A key component of the mathematics studies course will be the IB project, in which the student will produce a piece of written work based on personal research that is guided and supervised by the teacher and cumulative written exam. IB MATH SL I (Full IB Diploma Only) Grade: 11 MA4S1A / MA4S1B Credit: 1 This course is the first year of a two year course for students who already possess knowledge of basic mathematical concepts, and who are equipped with the skills needed to apply algebraic and geometric techniques correctly. The course focuses on introducing important mathematical concepts through the development of mathematical techniques. Students will apply the mathematical knowledge they have acquired to solve realistic problems in a written assessment that will be part of the compiled IB exam taken at the end of the second year. The topics of study in year one are: vectors, probability, statistics, functions and differential calculus. This is a two year math course commitment. Page 3 of 5 Revised 1/18/2017

4 IB MATH SL 2 (Full IB Diploma Only) Grade: 12 MA4S2A / MA4S2B Credit: 1 Prerequisite: Standard Level 1 This course is a continuation of Pre-IB Math Standard Level. The topics of study in year two are: matrices, trigonometry, differential and integral calculus. The students will complete their internal assessments and prepare for the IB exam given in May. Students are expected to take the IB exam in May. IB MATH HL 1 (Open Enrollment) Grade: 11 MA4H1A / MA4H1B Credit: 1 Prerequisites: Pre-AP Algebra l, Pre-AP Geometry and Pre-AP Algebra ll Note: This course co-seats with AP Calculus BC. This course is the first year of a two-year course designed for students with a strong background in mathematics who intend to include mathematics as a major component of their university studies, either as a subject in its own right or within courses such as physics, engineering, and technology. IB HL Math helps students develop mathematical knowledge and refine their powers of abstraction and generalization through logical and critical thinking. Topics of study in this course include differential and integral calculus, sequences and series, and parametric and polar functions. Students are expected to take the AP Calculus BC exam in May of their junior year and the IB exam in May of senior year. The student must abide by AHS registration and drop policies. IB MATH HL 2 (Open Enrollment) Grade: 12 MA4H2A / MA4H2B Credit: 1 Prerequisites: IB HL Math 1 This course is the continuation of IB HL Math 1. Topics of study in HL Math 2 include calculus, statistics, vectors, and geometry in three dimensions. Students will develop an appreciation of the elegance and power of mathematics, refine their powers of abstraction and generalization, and gain a more broad appreciation of math through patience and persistence in problem-solving. Students will also conduct an individual investigation about a math topic that interests them, and write a brief research dissertation about that topic. Students are expected to take the AP Calculus BC exam in May of their junior year and the IB exam in May of senior year. The student must abide by AHS registration and drop policies. CALCULUS Grade: MA2CAA / MA2CAB Credit: 1 Note: This is not an AP course. Students successfully completing this course receive Pre-AP/IB weighted GPA. Calculus builds upon the study of mathematical properties, graphs of functions, as well as limits, derivatives and integrals. AP CALCULUS AB Grade: MA3CAA / MA3CAB Credit: 1 AP Calculus AB is a college level course. It is primarily concerned with developing the students understanding of the concepts of calculus and providing experience with its methods and applications. The course emphasizes a multi-representational approach to calculus, with concepts, results and problems being expressed graphically, numerically, analytically and verbally. 5 AP CALCULUS BC Grade: MA3CBA / MA3CBB Credit: 1 AP Calculus BC is an extension of AP Calculus AB. Common topics require a similar depth of understanding. Included among the extensions in Calculus BC are the study of infinite series and the study of the calculus of vector-valued functions. This course will include review of Statistics, Pre-calculus, and AP Calculus BC in preparation for the AP Calculus BC Math exam. Students are expected to take the AP exam in May. AP PROBABILITY AND STATISTICS Grade: MA3STA / MA3STB Credit: 1 Prerequisite: Algebra II This course is designed to expose the students to four broad conceptual statistical themes: Exploring Data, Sampling and Experimentation of Data, Anticipating Patterns and Statistical Inference. These topics listed are the focus of the AP exam questions. Students are expected to take the AP exam in May. COLLEGE PREPATORY MATHEMATICS Grade: 12 MA1CPA / MA1CPB Credit: 1 Enrollment is limited to college bound students who have demonstrated that they are at risk of needing to complete developmental Mathematics courses in College. Successful completion of this course earns a Texas Success Initiative (TSI) exemption at Collin College. College Preparatory Math is designed in conjunction with Collin College to cover the content of the Collin College developmental (remedial, non-credit) math courses. Topics include a study of relations, functions, inequalities, algebraic expressions and equations (linear, polynomial, radical, rational), with a special emphasis on linear and quadratic expressions and equations.
