11 Key Facts Grade four will be seen as a "standard pass" and a grade five as a "strong pass". Universities will require 5+ in subjects Most colleges ask for grade 4+ Sixth form needs 5 + in most subjects grades-coming-soon

12 NOA SIXTH FORM September 2018 Entry 16 AS/A levels and 8 Level 3 vocational courses available ENTRY REQUIREMENTS A Level programmes: 5 x grade 5 or above GCSEs including English and Maths. 13 Key changes to GCSEs 2018 Most coursework has gone. In the main courses are examined by final exams worth a total of 100%. BTEC subjects have exams too which must be passed in order to achieve the qualification. The new GCSEs are harder and require students to recall a larger number of facts. Data sheets have been reduced in maths and science subjects. In English Literature students are expected to learn key quotes from texts and analyse unseen 19 th century texts. Lots of exam boards are only issuing one practice paper. Most option subjects will have just one paper meaning there is no longer the choice of higher or foundation. Reduction in choice of vocational and functional skills courses. Drive for Humanities and MFL GCSEs driving the Ebacc qualification

15 Home Learning Research tells us that regular, good quality home learning completion leads to better exam outcomes. Equivalent to an extra 5 months in school! Parental involvement should focus on the effort a child puts into their work. Research also tells us that asking a child to explain their thinking when working out a problem can really help. 10 minutes a day working through maths problems could be really beneficial. Don t panic though; research shows the child needs to do the explaining!

16 Home Learning Every student in yr 11 should be working for at least one hour outside of school hours. This will increase after Christmas to a at least two hours. Students have knowledge organisers that contain key information for each subject. These are very useful for revision. Every lesson students are tested on key understanding in memory platforms. Homework is set on Go For Schools which all parents have log in details for ( if you don t please complete a slip at the end and we will set you up). Students are more than welcome to be in school until 5pm using computers and reference materials. Home learning doesn t have to be set by the teacher. Encourage students to make revision cards/ posters and to complete further reading. There is no such things as I haven t got anything to do.

Have you tried: Reading a newspaper/ periodical ( New Scientist, National Geographic) Listening to a podcast / watching a current affairs programme Reading a reference book around a subject Listening to the radio/ TV in target language. 25 Top tips Hobbies are so important. Time away from books helps bring perspective. Time management and organisation. Wall planners and planning ahead to avoid overload. Make it visible within the family. Seeking help and talking to others. Family, friends and staff in school. Having small achievable goals to break up revision. Great to be working towards something. Scale back paid work- do you all have a working licence signed by school? Use of social media + revision = <100% effort Regular breaks when working 45 mins work : 15 mins break A calm place to work with enough space for books, notes etc.
