1 Baytown Junior Newsletter November 2017 BOLINGER S BULLHORN Our purpose at Baytown Junior is to ensure that our students are successful. We know that students who are successful readers, writers, and problem solvers will have a greater chance of future success throughout their lives. As a staff, we know that it is our responsibility to help our students learn at high levels. One specific area that we have targeted at our school is Student Talk. We ask the question, What are students saying during class discussions about what they have learned? We believe that if our students are able to talk about what they are learning in complete sentences, rather than one or two-word responses, then higher levels of thinking and learning will occur. To help with this process, our teachers have begun to incorporate follow up questions to extend student responses. We want to encourage our parents to join us in this initiative. When you ask your child a question, how can you increase or extend the response that you receive? Here are a few sample questions that you may want to try using at home: Can you answer that in a complete sentence? Can you tell me more about that? Why do you think that? What is your evidence for that? As we enter our Thanksgiving holiday season, we want to thank each of our parents for your encouragement, support, and dedication to your children and our school. 2 Volleyball finished strong and Basketball has just begun! Tryouts were last week, and our basketball players have been working hard to prepare for their first round of games! Families ate with their students and enjoyed a beautiful commons set up! Thank you to all the families and grandparents who joined us on this day!

3 NOVEMBER CHARACTER TRAIT SELF-CONTROL What is Self-Control? The definition of selfcontrol is: SOAR PRIZE WHEEL Have good behavior? We have rewards for you! This month, students enjoyed lunch outside with music, games, and ice cream for being on the SOAR board. Each Friday, students can pay to spin the prize wheel! You could win spirit gear, supplies, headphones, lunch in the commons, and the list goes on! Students have the ability to earn SOAR Bucks in the classroom for good behavior. Students can pay to spin the prize wheel or go to the SOAR store to purchase items! On October 31st, Baytown Junior honored Breast Cancer Awareness by wearing pink. We ended the day with a pep-rally including an amazing performance from the dance and cheer team, music from the band, and a studentteacher dance battle! -The ability to control oneself, in particular one s emotions or desires In the month of November, we will focus on campus self-control! Students will be honored by the Character of the Week. COLLEGE AND CAREER FO- CUS MILITARY In November, we celebrated Veteran s day and learned about military opportunities! Mr. Kollmeier played TAPS during our moment of silence. Students who wish to be in the military will choose the Public Services endorsement for High School! 3

4 Hurricane Harvey recovery continues as students, staff members, and our community stay strong together! Exxon Mobil recognized how much money teachers put into their classroom. To assist with the learn- ing environment for our students and help our teachers affected by the storm, Exxon donated $100 gift cards to all displaced staff members! A huge thank you for your assistance! We are all family, #GCCISD Strong GOSLIN GOALS! Goal setting is one of the top reasons people are successful! We encourage our students weekly to set academic goals for themselves during advisory. Want to know one of our campus goals? Respect! We want our school to be a Goslin family. Protect your peers like you do your siblings and respect your teachers like you do your parents. Together as a family we can accomplish so much! 4

5 Are you putting forth effort? Students get on the SOAR board for accomplishing the following: 75 or above in all classes No more than 2 absences 0 office referrals At BJS, we believe all of our students can accomplish this goal and be on the SOAR board. Putting forth effort means you are asking for help when you need it (tutorials Tuesday and Thursday), respecting students and staff, and coming to school every day. SOAR board students get rewarded each 6 weeks! Check out our picnic and ice cream party! 5

6 GOSLIN HONORS Each week, Baytown Junior honors a scholar and a character. To achieve scholar of the week, students must be devoted to academic pursuits, make great grades, and be a leader in the classroom. Characters are selected for exhibiting attributes such as integrity, honesty, courage, loyalty, fortitude, and other important virtues that promote good behavior and habits. A huge congratulations to: Abigail Sanchez, 6th Grade Character of the Week * Delyla Mayfield, 6th Grade Scholar of the Week * Kiara Thompson, 8th Grade Scholar of the Week * Paola Valverde, 8th Grade Character of the Week GOLDEN GOSLIN Each week, Baytown Junior honors a staff member who truly earned the Golden Goslin award. The Golden Goslin goes to someone who went above and beyond the call of duty, works hard every day, and ensures our students are learning at high levels! Give a huge shout out to Mrs. Thomas and Ms. Barrett! 6
