3 New Math Initiative Expand Algebra over two years at the middle school level Benefits! Better prepared for Algebra II at MLHS! Necessary time to introduce lesson, practice, check for understanding, incorporate student-centered activities and labs! Students have opportunity to see the mathematics in an applicable way! Providing for deeper understanding of concepts and success in future math and science classes

4 Shifting of Personnel To provide support for students as Math program transitioned personnel changes took place! Mrs. Deamer 8 th Grade: Algebra I/Honors Geometry! Mrs. Matschke (new to district) 7 th grade:algebra 1a and Algebra 1ab! Mrs. Pelliconi: Math 8, push-in support teacher and supplemental support

5 6 th Grade Math 6 th Grade Math classes are heterogeneous. Every student has equal opportunity to sign up for ALEKS or similar program to reinforce math skills or for enrichment.

6 7 th Grade Placement Process " Based on 3 criteria * Iowa Algebra Readiness Test April 26 * BC Diagnostic Assessment-May 24 * Average of MP grades- First three marking period

7 7th Grade-Math Classes Algebra 1a # Seventh grade students will begin the study of algebra. Students will seek to complete Algebra 1 over a period of two years in the seventh and eighth grades. # Algebra 1a is the first year in a two-year Algebra 1 course. The course is designed to integrate standard 7 th grade topics and pre-algebra concepts, while introducing seventh grade students to formal algebra. # The students practice a variety of topics, including: operations with integers; solving linear equations; proportions and percentages; graphing on the coordinate plane; linear functions; systems of equations; and linear inequalities.

8 7th Grade-Math Classes Algebra 1ab # This complete course in algebra develops the basic concepts of algebraic skills through three key ideas: the equation and inequality, data analysis, graphs, and translation of verbal situations into algebraic symbols. # Extensive use of the scientific calculator enhances the development. # Geometric concepts, probability, and graph interpretation allow for the application of the algebraic skills. Formulas, function notation, graphing, the laws of exponents and radicals, operations with polynomials, factoring, and solving quadratic equations by factoring, writing equations of lines, proportions and the quadratic formula are some of the topics presented.

9 8th Grade Math Classes: Algebra 1b Algebra 1b is the completion of the full-year course begun in grade 7. The course is designed to review and strengthen concepts introduced in the seventh grade and then go on to more advanced concepts in algebra. Students practice a variety of techniques, including: linear equations; functions; relations; graphing lines; data collection and analysis; systems of equations; inequalities; absolute value; quadratic equations; and exponent properties.

10 8 th Grade Math Classes Algebra Concepts # The Algebra Concepts class is designed to provide eighth grade students with the fundamental concepts of algebra they will need to be successful in Algebra 1. # Topics include properties of real numbers, order of operations,data analysis, the coordinate plane, solving algebraic equations, proportions, percent, probability, relations and functions, writing and graphing linear equations,powers and roots and their connection to scientificnotation and the Pythagorean Theorem. Basic # Mathematical skills are infused throughout the course.

11 8 th Grade Math Classes Honors Geometry # This is a course in geometry covering the basic concepts of plane, solid, coordinate, and some analytic geometry stressing deductive proof and reasoning. # Throughout the year the properties learned in algebra are reintroduced into this course. The aims and objectives of the course are to develop and show the value of the logic of deductive reasoning and to improve and increase the understanding and application of the terminology, the symbolism, and the structure of mathematics. # The problems explored involve intense analytical thought and require strong algebraic skills. Non-Euclidean geometries such as fractal geometry and the Lenart sphere are investigated. Some student projects will involve the use of computer technology.
