3 Headline Commentary The NEET population has fallen slightly to 3.1% this month (1,048 young people), though the Not Knowns have risen to 4.9%. At the same point last year, the equivalent figures were 4.2% NEET and 5.3% Not Knowns, so significant improvement has been made in reducing both cohorts. The NEET population of 1,048 young people comprises 426 in the year 12 age group and 622 in the year 13 age group. The Participation rate has decreased slightly from last month, down to 88.8%, but this is 2.3 percentage points higher than t he same point last year. Schools and colleges have been submitting their offers made to young people for places on courses starting in September. Currently, there are 5.1% of Year 11 pupils, and 18.2% of Year 12 pupils, without a September Guarantee. This is a significan t improvement on last month s figures, and compared to the same point last year, this is an improved position for both year groups. In total, 11.7% of this combined cohort are currently without an offer, compared to 17.1% in July Further work is taking place with schools and colleges to increase the number of pupils with a September Guarantee, with a key focus on supporting those in vulnerable groups. District performance for NEET varies from 1.8% in Sevenoaks to 4.4% In Thanet, though most districts are between 2.5% and 3.5%. NEET proportions rose in Ashford, Gravesham and Swale, whilst they remained the same in Sevenoaks. All other districts reduced their proportions of NEET young people in July from the previous month. District performance for Not Knowns is less varied, and ranges from 3.5% in Shepway to 5.9% in Ashford and Thanet. The number of Not Knowns rose in all districts this, in line with seasonal expectations at this time of year due to course end da tes. 72% of NEET young people have been NEET for 27 or more, up from 68% last month. In the same month last year this figure was also 72%, which shows that although our overall NEET population is reducing, there remains a significant proportio n of young people whose NEET status is hard to shift, and work is taking place to develop creative ways to engage the long -term NEET population. Work is taking place to ensure we have contact details for the full NEET and Not Known cohorts. It can be a challenge to maintain monitoring and support when young people s details can change regularly. Districts have been working with schools to plan their support for young people on GCSE results day to ensure that young people who do not achieve their expected results receive appropriate advice and guidance for progression into post -16 education and training. 3rd August 2017 Date: 03/08/2017 Page 3 of 13 File: File
