U S D O R G / R O B I N S O N / P I B Team News 1st Quarter Grades will be posted on Friday! Grade cards will be handed out during conferences the following week. Our goal is to meet with 100% of our families. All conferences have been scheduled. If you are not sure of your time, please your students 6th hour teacher. We look forward to meeting with you next week. I am attaching a copy of the Robinson Gear Order form to the newsletter . Orders are due to the office by October 30. Did you complete any community service hours this summer? Make sure you write your reflection and turn in your community service forms to Ms. Mandelbaum (6th Grade) and Ms. Rowley (7th and 8th Grade). Log sheets are available on our team page on the Robinson Website. Sixth Graders need to complete 15 hours, Seventh Graders 20 hours, and Eighth Graders 25 hours. If the hours are not completed Social Studies grades will be lowered 10%. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you for your support! At conferences, we will be talking about Academic Honesty. Just a reminder from our Pre-IB Program Agreement I will demonstrate the highest degree of academic integrity. I understand that direct or indirect cheating (plagiarism) can be grounds for immediate removal from the program. Please talk to your student about academic honesty. O C T O B E R 1 9, Academic Honesty Examples of cheating: Copying from another student's assignment or test. Allowing another student to copy from your assignment or test. Posting assignments or tests to social media (Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, etc.) to share their work with others. Texting pictures of assignments with work displayed. Using materials (e.g., textbooks, notes, formula lists, etc.) during a test without the teacher s permission. Collaborating on an in-class or take-home assignment or test without the teacher s permission. Having someone else write or plan a paper/project/assignment for you. PIB Academic Honesty Discipline Plan: Step 1: Both the provider of information and the receiver of information a 0 on the assignment. 2 P A G E 2 Sixth Grade PIB Berry Math Students will begin Topic 2: Percents in the second Module (Relating Quantities). We will be connecting the ideas from our ratio unit to the concept of percent, decimal and fractional equivalents. Berry Science We will continue working in the Life Science Unit this week. We will wrap up our study of Populations with notes and an open-book performance assessment. Look at your child s agenda to see which day the assessment will be. Callard -Language Arts Students have been busy working on their giant plot charts for our short story Ghost of the Lagoon. In addition to reflecting upon the elements of plot, students also are writing examples of figurative language and literary devices they find in the text. We are also working on critical analysis of non-fiction text next week. During language time, we will be memorizing prepositions with a fun chant. It was a wonderful week of presentations of Spanish-speaking countries and famous people! Next week students will read the first four episodes of the story Felipe y María. This story is told entirely in Spanish and uses vocabulary that students have already learned. Please make sure to ask your child about Felipe and his struggles! Mandelbaum Social Studies Next week we will be finishing up our study of Egypt. We will review on Wednesday and take the chapter test on Thursday. Friday will be our typing day for our Build-A-Book Mesopotamian chapter. Just a reminder that students should be turning in Community Service hours as they earn them. I have many students who have not turned in any hours yet, and ten hours are due on Friday, December 1 st. Callard -Spanish Students are busy reading Ramona la Chinche and honing writing skills by summarizing chapters into key events. Students also are working with the conditional tense this week and next. Mandelbaum Language Arts The classes will continue reading Z for Zachariah. We will begin researching a second component of their interview assignment. Students will research something that was triggered or piqued their interest about their relative s life. We also will continue our grammar study reviewing and testing over nouns and pronouns. Polson Spanish Next week we will read Episodes 2 4 of our story Felipe y Maria. We will do a timed write in Spanish, measure our reading fluency, and act out the stories. Sinsel Math Math 6 Plus students will begin a new topic on Percent. We ll have a quiz on Friday!

3 P A G E 3 Seventh Grade PIB Students have now read the first chapter of the novel Patricia va a California. They will read chapter two next week and do a variety of activities to aid in their comprehension of the novel. There will be a short quiz on Thursday over chapters one and two. Lavacek Language Arts The 7th graders will wrap up our unit on science fiction as social commentary this coming week. We will finish working with Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut, and then students will use what they have learned to write their own science fiction story. Rowley Social Studies Sinsel -Math Math 7 Plus students will begin a new topic: Multiple Representations of Equations. We will have a quiz on Friday. Jenney Science Seventh graders will be doing a short unit on natural hazards this week. Polson Spanish Next week the 7 th grade students will read Cap. 2 and 3 in their Patricia novels. Students should be coming to class with their novel or pdf every day until Fall Recess. Sims Language Arts The 7th graders will wrap up our unit on science fiction as social commentary this coming week. We will finish working with Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut, and then students will use what they have learned to write their own science fiction story. Stroot Math Math 7+ students will continue to work on Prealgebra skills. Van Horn Math We will continue working on Module 3 Reasoning Abstractly by solving equations. Students are required to complete 30 minutes of Mathia each week. I am available for additional help Monday and Tuesday at lunch. Thank you for your support!

4 P A G E 4 Eighth Grade PIB Callard Language Arts Students are reading Laurie Halse Anderson s award-winning historical fiction novel Fever, We will also be starting our 10 th grade Wordly Wise curriculum so that our 8 th graders are wellprepared for the high-level texts they will be reading in honors courses next year in high school. Students will do a variety of activities on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week to learn possessive adjectives and review the conjugation of the verb tener in the present tense. There will be a quiz over both of these grammar points on Thursday. Callard Spanish Students are busy reading Ramona la Chinche and honing writing skills by summarizing chapters into key events. Students also are working with the conditional tense this week and next. Jenney Science Eighth graders are beginning their unit on the study of matter and energy interactions. Lavacek Language Arts Students are reading Laurie Halse Anderson s award-winning historical fiction novel Fever, We will also be starting our 10 th grade Wordly Wise curriculum so that our 8 th graders are well-prepared for the high-level texts they will be reading in honors courses next year in high school. Sims Language Arts The eighth graders continue reading and analyzing To Kill a Mockingbird. We ll focus on how the social structure functions in the novel and how it affects the characters. Rowley Social Studies Stroot Math Algebra students will take a test on Sequences, Tuesday. Next, we will study the unit on the Exponential Function. Van Horn Math We will begin Chapter 5-Exponential Functions on Tuesday. Students are required to complete 30 minutes of Mathia each week.
