2 Welcome to HEWORTH GRANGE OUR AIMS AND VALUES We want our young people to be ambitious on behalf of themselves and their families. We want them to aspire to lead productive and rewarding lives and we will support them in their quest to do so. We will do this by helping them to achieve the very best of their ability, challenged and inspired by a learning experience designed by talented and committed staff and delivered using state of the art digital technology. Above all, however, we want young people from Heworth Grange to become caring, responsible and active citizens, respectful of the opinions and traditions of others, and proud of themselves, their families, their school and their community. Our aspirations for the young people at this school are underpinned by a shared set of values, a belief system that we hold dear, that informs our working lives and that we hope will be embodied by the attitudes and behaviour of the young people we work with. 3 Thank you for taking the time to read our prospectus. Heworth Grange is an exciting and vibrant place and I hope that by reading this you will get at least a flavour of that. Our young people achieve very well. Students make tremendous progress at Key Stage 4 and thereby achieve excellent GCSE results, particularly in English, Maths and Science. Our Sixth Form too is growing with its success, regularly achieving a 100% pass rate at A Level with a large proportion of the highest grades. As a consequence many of our students leave to study and work in many different parts of the country. Never complacent, we are determined to build upon this success by providing a curriculum which meets the needs of our students and a learning experience which both challenges and inspires them. In April 2012 we opened what was effectively a brand new school. We are confident we have facilities fit for delivering a first class education well into the 21st Century. With access to state of the art digital technology and greatly enhanced community arts and sports facilities, our new buildings provide a wealth of new opportunities for our students and their families and we look forward to sharing the benefits of these with all of our local community. Heworth Grange has always been highly regarded within the local community for its caring and inclusive ethos and we work hard with parents and carers to form a partnership that allows learning to flourish. We expect a lot of our young people. In return we encourage them to become caring, responsible and active members of society, proud of their local community and determined to make a positive contribution to it. 4 Transition The move from primary to secondary education is an exciting time. We work hard to ensure the transition process is as smooth and anxiety free as possible. Primary children from our cluster schools visit Heworth Grange with their teachers on many occasions whilst in Year 6, for a variety of curriculum opportunities. Towards the end of the summer term, Year 6 pupils who will be transferring to Heworth Grange in September benefit from a week long visit to Heworth Grange where they can experience life in a secondary school and get Year 7 Form Classes Year 7 pupils will be placed in registration groups which reflect a social and academic mix. In the first instance, the Head of Year 7 will define these groups based upon information gained from the feeder primary schools. Particular care will be taken to ensure there is a mix of pupils from the different primary schools in each tutor group, whilst at the same time ensuring that pupils are not isolated from positive friendships. Teaching Groups The curriculum is delivered via setting arrangements of classes. Setting in Year 7 is based upon: Feeder school recommendations a feel for the atmosphere and ethos. During their time they work with their tutor groups, meet their form tutors, the Head of Year, and take part in a wide variety of activities and lessons. Whilst the children are in Year 6 our transition coordinators are able to offer support and guidance. Key Stage 2 SAT s results Curriculum Based on 38 x 75 minute sessions a fortnight. The curriculum contains the following subjects: English Maths Science PE Expressive & Performing Arts Technology Art French Geography History Computing Music Learning for life Students also have the opportunity to take an additional language in Years 8 & 9.

6 Key Stage 4 During Key Stage 4 pupils follow one of three routes to help maximise their success at the end of Year 11. All pupils, no matter which route they are on, have the opportunity to gain the five GCSE passes at C or above or an equivalent qualification. To ensure every pupil follows the appropriate route, each receives individual advice from members of the School Leadership team, Head of Year, Form Tutor and subject teacher, based on information obtained through Key Stage 3. Compulsory Subjects English, Maths, Science, core PE and PSRE (includes RE, Health Education and Careers) Route 1 For pupils who are following separate sciences Route 2 For pupils who are following a mixture of academic and vocational subjects Route 3 For pupils following an alternative curriculum Options Subjects Students choose two subjects from each list List A History Geography French Spanish Italian List B Computing ICT Media Studies Business Studies Travel & Tourism PE Resistant Materials Graphics Food Technology Art & Textiles Music Dance Expressive & Performing Arts Health & Social Care Additional Subjects ICT COPE Horticulture Animal Care Film Studies A Modern Language is a requirement for our most able pupils, but open to all. Post 16 Heworth Grange offers Post 16 students the best opportunities to achieve. All students receive support and guidance to select the correct subject choices for Post 16 and are closely monitored and supported during their time in Post 16. This year we have opened a new Post 16 Learning Centre (pictured right) which provides out students with excellent facilities to assist them in reaching their goals.
7 A School for The Future In December 2012 Heworth Grange opened its doors on an exciting new educational environment. Most of the present buildings have been replaced or refurbished to a very high standard which will help to transform students learning Post 16 Learning Centre Amphitheatre Dining Area Science Block
8 Pastoral Support is strong within Heworth Grange and is managed by an experienced team of pastoral leaders. Pastoral Structure Each school year group has its own Head of Year who, together with their assistants and the form tutors, are responsible for the welfare, behaviour, attendance and general progress of all pupils in the year group. Heads of Year will normally deal with most issues within their year group, although more serious difficulties may be referred to the Assistant Head Teacher, or another member of the School Leadership Team. The Head of Year 7 is Mr Hope, he and his assistant Head of Year, Miss Hughes, work closely the primary schools to ensure a smooth transition into Heworth Grange. At the end of Year 7, the year group pass on to a new Head of Year and year team, who remain with them until the end of Year 11. Behaviour Expectations The discipline of the school is firm but not harsh: we look for your support in ensuring the best standards of behaviour from your child when he/she is in school. A well-disciplined school is essential, in order to achieve an orderly and safe environment in which children can work, learn and progress without disruption Parental Involvement The school aims at all times to act in the best interests of its young people and we cannot stress sufficiently the importance of cooperaton between home and school in encouraging the right attitude towards learning, behaviour, attendance and achievement: this is what determines the future life chances for young people. Should you wish to speak to your child s Head of Year, it is important to appreciate that they have teaching commitments and therefore may not be available to speak to you immediately, we ask that you telephone school to arrange a convenient time.
9 Pastoral Care Teachers are very committed and provide extensive out-of-school support for those in danger of failing, those working below target and for anyone, including the most able, who feels the need for additional guidance. Gwen Coates Ofsted Inspector
10 EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES Heworth offers students a wide range of extra curricular activities which take place during lunchtimes and after school. All are offered completely free of charge and we hope that all of our students make the most of these opportunities. As well as providing new and exciting challenges, the clubs and groups which meet are a good basis for forming new friendships and working with staff in a different context. Our lunch and after school clubs currently include: Dance Chess History Film Netball Trampolining Cricket Football (Boys and Girls Singing Concert Band Basketball Games Art Social Performance Ukelele Coding Maths Futsal Athletics Rowing Badminton Tennis Sports Leadership Science Animal Reading English Bloggers In addition to our activities offered, we run an annual camping holiday to Amboise, in the beautiful Loire Valley, available to all students, and a bi-annual skiing trip to Austria. In recent years our Post 16 students have also taken part in trips to Costa Rica, Tanzania and Morocco to allow the students to investigate issues such as biodiversity. THE ARTS AT HEWORTH GRANGE The school has a long tradition of high quality performances featuring students of all ages. As well as spectacular annual dance shows featuring over 100 students and concerts showcasing our school bands and vocalists, our recent large scale musicals include Our House, CATS!, Back to The 80 s and We Will Rock You! with more planned for 2017.

IMPORTANT DATES FOR ADMISSIONS Heworth Grange adopts the admissions policies of Gateshead Local Education Authority, and the policies can be found on our website and at the Gateshead Council website at From 9 September 2016 Gateshead Residents can apply on-line at must be submitted by Monday 31 October if your child lives in Gateshead and attends a Gateshead School and is due to transfer to secondary school you will receive information through your child s school on 9 September If you complete a paper application form you must return it to the Head Teacher of the school your child currently attends in Gateshead by Monday 31 October If your child does not attend a Gateshead school but lives in Gateshead, you must write to School Admissions, Regent Street, Gateshead, Tyne & Wear, NE8 1HH to request an application form. Alternatively you can apply on-line. Applications must be submitted by Monday 31 October 2016 If you live outside of Gateshead and want to apply to a Gateshead school you must obtain an application form from your own Council and return it to them by their closing date or apply through their on-line application system. However you must still consider the information in Gateshead Council s Admission to Secondary school booklet so that you know what the admission arrangements are to Gateshead schools. This information is available at gov.uk. Your own Council will send us notification of your application and they will let you know the final allocation of a school place for your child.
