2 Forward The University of Texas at El Paso Fact Book is an annual publication designed to serve as an easily-accessible and consistent source of information for the university community. The Fact Book includes the most frequently requested data on students, programs, faculty, financial resources and facilities. The information in the Fact Book is generated from multiple sources, but it is primarily generated from official reports to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Data presented in the Fact Book may differ from other reports, due to minor differences in definitions or data-capture dates; however, in most cases, the variation will be minor. The Fact Book is expected to be used as a resource for planning and evaluation activities by the campus community. We will continue to improve the document based on the feedback and suggestions we receive. I acknowledge the support of many colleagues who had an active role in generating and updating the Fact Book. In particular, I want to acknowledge the work of CIERP s Data and Reporting Group; they made significant efforts to improve the reliability and accuracy of the data. A more comprehensive list of contributors is included in the last section. We proudly chose to use the University s colors (blue and orange) to highlight data in the Fact Book. TASP is a test of the academic skills that are believed to be necessary for success in college: basic skills in writing, reading, and mathematics. Testing Requirements: Prior to 1997, all new students in Texas public institutions of higher education were required to take the TASP test during their first nine hours of college enrollment. In 1997, the law was changed to require that all new students present TASP scores prior to enrolling, beginning in fall In addition, students must pass all three sections before they complete 60 semester credit hours. Placement in Developmental Education Courses: State Law requires that every student who fails any one of the three sections of the basic college skills exam will be placed into developmental courses until the student passes that specific section, thereby compiling with the TASP mandate. State law permits a university to offer up to four developmental education courses: two in mathematics, one in reading, and one in writing. UTEP uses higher cut-off scores in its placement examination for specific curricular areas. UTEP Courses: The courses in italics are currently offered at UTEP. Previous courses have been modified and re-numbered in response to state policy changes. Enrollment for Different Reasons: The table includes first-time entering students affected by the TASP mandate, i.e., they are required by state legislative mandate to participate in remediation as a result of their placement examination scores in mathematics, reading, or writing. UTEP also uses higher cut-off scores to place additional students in specific developmental education courses. In addition, students can voluntarily enroll in developmental education courses if they want to improve their basic academic skills. Therefore, the above enrollment figures represent duplicate head counts; i.e., a student can be simultaneously enrolled in more than one developmental education course and may repeat a course in subsequent semesters. 148 SECTION 9 TABLE OF CONTENTS Page Definitions of Terms Used, Glossary Center for Institutional Evaluation, Research and Planning Mission Statement Acknowledgements APPENDIX

149 SECTION I: OVERVIEW DEFINITION OF TERMS USED Glossary Gender: Male (M) or Female (F) Ethnicity: White, Black, Hispanic, Asian-American, Native American, or International (Mexican National/Other). Classification: Freshman fewer than 30 semester credit hours; Sophomore semester credit hours; Junior semester credit hours; Senior 90 or more semester credit hours. Level: Undergraduate (UG), Post-Baccalaureate (PB), Masters (GR), or Doctoral (DR). Post-baccalaureate: Students possessing a baccalaureate degree, but who has not been admitted to a graduate program. Full/Part-Time: Undergraduate students who enroll for at least 12 credit hours and graduate students who enroll for at least nine credit hours are considered full-time students. SECTION II: NEW STUDENTS Regular Admit: Freshmen who rank in the top half of their class or who score a minimum of 920 on the SAT or a 20 composite on the ACT are automatically admitted to UTEP upon application and submission of the appropriate admission documents. This policy includes admission of graduates of an accredited Texas high school who graduated in the top 25% of their high school class, as described in Chapter 51 of the Texas Education Code. START (Provisional) Admit: Residents of Texas who do not meet the requirements for regular admission are eligible for provisional admission through the University s START Program. START students must attend Orientation, must be advised by the Academic Advising Center, must select their classes from a list of prescribed university courses, and must take a free, non-credit study skills course. During the first semester at UTEP, a START student must complete at least 9 semester hours with a minimum grade of C in each course selected from at least two of the following areas: English, Mathematics, Natural Science, Foreign Language, or Liberal Arts (Anthropology, Art, Communication, History, Music, Psychology, Sociology, or Theatre Arts). A minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 must also be maintained. Once these requirements have been met, the student becomes fully admitted to the University and may change majors. First-time Freshman: Students who graduated from high school and who had never attended college prior to enrolling for the first time at UTEP in a fall semester. First-time, Full-time Freshman: Students who graduated from high school and who had never attended college prior to enrolling for the first time at UTEP in a fall semester for at least 12 credit hours. SECTION III: ENROLLMENT Full-Time Equivalent (FTE): Numerous methods are available to calculate FTE students, but only two are used here. The method divides the total of all undergraduate credit hours by 15, all masters credit hours by 12, and all doctoral credit hours by 9. The method counts the number of students taking a fulltime load (12 for undergraduate, 9 for graduate) and adds the full-time equivalent of part-time students, which is determined by dividing the credit hours taken by each part-time student by the full-time load at that level. SECTION IV: MAJORS Student FTE/Teacher FTE Ratio: Student FTE uses the method. Teacher FTE is calculated by teaching or administrative appointment percent times which directly supplement the teaching function. 9-1

150 DEFINITION OF TERMS USED (continued) SECTION V: COURSES Semester Credit Hour (SCH): A unit of measurement assigned to a course. Total SCH are computed by multiplying the number of credit hours assigned to a course by the number of students enrolled in the course. Exceed SCH: Generated by students whose SCH exceeds the state funding limit: Students whose undergraduate SCH attempted exceed the degree program plus 45 SCH (170 SCH); Students who have attempted the same course three or more times; Students whose developmental SCH exceeds 18 SCH. Organized Classes: Lectures, laboratories, seminars, or any combination of these types of instruction. SECTION VI: FACULTY Tenured/Tenure-track faculty: All faculty with one of the following ranks: Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor or Instructor. Nontenure-track faculty: All faculty with a rank of lecturer, visiting faculty or specialist. Assistant instructors, teaching assistants, or adjunct faculty are included if they are teachers of record. Full-time: All faculty with one of the following ranks, regardless of the time actually employed: Professor, Associate Professor, or Assistant Professor; also, nontenure-track faculty whose percent time is at least 100% in direct instructional activity. Part-time: All nontenure-track faculty whose percent time is less than 100% in direct instructional activity. Full Time Equivalent (FTE): Counts the number of full-time faculty and adds the full-time equivalent of part-time faculty, which is determined by the percent of their time spent in direct instructional activity. 9-2
