2 WHAT IS MATH CHALLENGE? A national inter-school competition in which students in classes 7, 8, 9 and 10 will have the opportunity to demonstrate their intellectual, analytical and problem solving skills using Math. Objectives: Strengthen the mathematical reasoning and analytical capabilities of the next generation of problem solvers in Pakistan! Foster a love of mathematics! Identify and celebrate Math talent!

3 WHO IS ORGANISING IT? The competition is jointly organized by DAWN and EDeQUAL DAWN is Pakistan s leading English newspaper - Dawn in Education has successfully organised the annual Spelling Bee for thirteen years EDeQUAL is a pioneer in implementing technology-enabled learning in Math and Science in Pakistan s schools - EDeQUAL s online learning system is used by schools to train teachers and to improve student performance in Math

4 WHO CAN PARTICIPATE? Schools in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad Schools in other cities can also participate, but they must be willing to compete in one of the above cities Students cannot participate independently; they must participate through their school Competition is open to students in classes 7, 8, 9 and 10 only Group 1: class 7 and 8 Group 2: class 9 and 10 Schools can choose to compete in one or both groups The competition for each group will be conducted separately Minimum student participation requirement in Round 1 (School Round) of the competition: 25 students from each class (50 students per group)

9 WHAT DOES IT COST TO PARTICIPATE? School registration fee: Rs 3,300 Per student participation fee: Rs 300 Minimum requirements for participation: 25 students per class (=50 students per group) Example: School wants to participate in Group 1 (class 7 & 8) only. Minimum student participation is 25 from class 7 and 25 from class 8. Ø School registration fee = Rs 3,300 Ø Student participation fee = 50 x Rs 300 = Rs 15,000 Ø Total = Rs 18,300 Ø Note: if there are more students each one must pay student participation fee

10 WHAT WILL STUDENTS GAIN FROM PARTICIPATING? Experience a flagship high-tech, high energy nationwide Math competition Opportunity to represent their school in competing for regional and national Math champion Each student will be provided: A unique username and password to access Math Challenge - School Round (to be administered by the school)! A completion certificate showing their score achieved in the School Round! A coupon worth Rs 299 that can be redeemed for EDeQUAL s online assessments, which can be used to test their Math competency level!

11 WHAT ARE SCHOOLS RESPONSIBLE FOR?! 1. Informing students and parents in class 7, 8, 9 and 10 about Math Challenge 2018! Posters to be placed in school and letters sent to parents! 2. Ensuring student signups (minimum 25 per class for each competing group)! 3. Collecting student participation fees (Rs 300 per student)! 4. Registering for Math Challenge online: 5. Printing out completed registration form and sending it with full payment by deadline: 31 October 2017! 6. Setting up computer lab for Round 1 (15-21 Jan 2018)! 7. Conducting Round 1 in computer lab (22-31 Jan 2018)! 8. Participating in subsequent rounds of the competition (if they qualify)!

12 SCHOOL ROLES Principal: inform students and parents, promote participation in competition Math Challenge coordinator: be the school s focal point for the competition, including registration, conduct of Round 1 within the school, selection of school team, participation of team in subsequent rounds Computer technician: prepare computers in lab to conduct Round 1 (based on implementing technical instructions from Math Challenge)

13 HOW DOES MY SCHOOL REGISTER? Complete online registration form: Identify which groups (Group 1, Group 2, or both) you will compete in! Identify how many students will participate in each group (min. 50 per group)! Collect participation fee (Rs 300) from each student Prepare a bank cheque for the total fee calculated in your completed registration form Print out registration form and send with bank cheque to DAWN Receive your confirmation of registration via Further instructions on participation in Round 1 and beyond will be shared with registered schools via and competition website

15 HOW SHOULD STUDENTS PREPARE? APPROACH Questions will be of different difficulty levels Difficulty level will increase with each Round! Emphasis will be more on question interpretation and analysis and less on complicated calculations Practice questions will be posted on competition website

16 HOW SHOULD STUDENTS PREPARE? EXAMPLE QUESTIONS Class 7: What is the difference between the sum of first 100 even numbers and the sum of the first 100 odd numbers?! Class 8: Four brothers were born at exactly 24 month intervals from each other. The sum of their ages is 40 years. How old is the youngest brother?! Class 9: If two sides of a triangle have lengths of 22 cm and 33 cm, what is the maximum perimeter of the triangle?! Class 10: The area of the small square is 100 cm 2. What is the area, in cm 2, of the large square?!
