3 Understanding the Idea of a Fraction Practice 1 Reminder The numerator is the top number in a fraction. It tells the number of parts or sections you are considering. The denominator is the bottom number. It tells the number of parts in the whole set. Numerator 2 (There are 2 parts you are considering.) Denominator 3 (There are 3 parts in the whole set.) 5 Visualizing Equivalent Fractions Practice 3 Reminder Equivalent fractions represent equal amounts divided into a different number of pieces. Equivalent fractions are equal to each other.
