No School Wednesday, November 22 - Friday, November 24 Have a Safe and Happy Thanksgiving! As we enter the second quarter of the school year we are also entering a time of possible extreme weather changes. At this time of the year it can be 60 degrees and sunny, just as likely as 30 degrees with heavy snow. Please send your student to school with the proper outerwear for the day s weather. Students will have outdoor recess unless it is extremely cold or raining. Getting outside is important for our students. This in an opportunity to relax and play. Please consider what your child will need to stay warm on any given day. Additionally, remember to label gloves, snowpants, boots, hats and other gear with your child s name. It may be surprising as to how many of these cold weather items look nearly identical, and also, how frequently one boot or one glove gets separated from its partner. I wish you a most enjoyable Thanksgiving holiday. I am truly thankful for the opportunity to work with your children and their teachers everyday. Over 1320 items were collected for The Holland Community Action House! So many families will be helped because of your support! Together we ARE making a difference in our community! The class that brought in the most items was Mr. Ambrose s class with 302 items! Congratulations to everyone! You are all winners! Thank you again for your generous donations. 2 MINDSET MATTERS by Mrs. Vriesman An important part of having a Growth Mindset is the ability to keep trying even when a task is difficult. Research has shown that students who feel valued by their community are more motivated to learn. At North Holland we work hard to value each student by creating opportunities for everyone to shine through mentoring, personal notes, school PRIDE groups, rewards & certificates, or team building activities in our classrooms. Here are some things you can do at home to build feelings of value and community with your kids: Say yes when you can. If there are things you can let your child have the freedom to decide, then let them. This could be as little as letting them wear socks that don t match. Take the time to check in with your kids individually each day. This could be a 5 to 10-minute conversation that takes place at breakfast, over dinner or even in the car. Plan a family game night where you can put work and school aside in order for the whole family to connect and have fun. Make sure to stop on down in the lab during spring conferences! Happy Thanksgiving! 3 rd -5 th graders are finishing their CyberSafety Google Slideshow Presentations and will be sharing it with me and each other next week. Parents, give your to your child and then they can share their work with you! 2 nd graders finished their fun online investigations on CyberSafety as well. They have learned a ton along the way. The 3 CyberPigs and Webonauts would be great discussion starters on helping your child stay safe on the internet. Currently, they are exploring landforms and bodies of water online and creating a Google Slideshow about what they learn. 1 st graders are creating a Tux Paint slide show of the four seasons. They are drawing a picture for each season, writing a sentence, and then putting the pictures in the correct seasonal order in a slide show. Kindergarten has been working through Starfall.com and just finished all the letters. They are improving so much on their use of the mouse and navigating my Moodle site and the links I give them. This past week they also got to have a little fun with some Thanksgiving online activities! If you have any questions, please feel free to me at johnsond@westottawa.net. Thanks! 3 GEMS FROM THE GYM by Mrs. Doyle Attention All Basketball Sharpshooters! There is an Elks Hoop Shoot (foul shooting contest) on Saturday, December 16th at the Hope College Dow Center for any interested students between the ages of 8 and 13. This is a low-key free throw shooting contest for boys and girls. Everyone shoots 25 free throws and they simply count up how many you make. The top 1-2 kids in each age division move on to the next level of competition and win a little trophy. Over the years, many of our students have done very well. Kids who are 8-9 years old shoot from a line 4 feet in front of the regulation free throw line. Boys compete against boys and girls vs. girls. There are three age groups: 8-9, and Age is determined by how old your child will be on April 1st of Registration for the contest is between 12:15 and 1:00 and the contest begins at 1:00. There is a sign up sheet below. Hope some of you can do it! Noticias de Español Thank you to all the parents that stopped by during conferences! I really enjoyed sharing your child s work with you! We are wrapping up our unit on needs and wants this week and connecting our vocabulary with Thanksgiving! K-1: To wrap up our unit on food, the students drew and labeled pictures of the meals. 2 nd : To wrap up their unit on rooms in a home, second graders created a map of their home and labeled the rooms in Spanish. 3 rd : To wrap up their unit on clothing, third graders labeled a diagram of clothing. 4 th : To wrap up their unit on the home, 4 th grade students wrote a descriptive paragraph about the rooms in their home in Spanish! You will find some of these paragraphs hanging up in the hallway near the library. 5 th : To wrap up the unit on needs and wants, students created their own Bingo board with 5 nesecidades y 4 deseos. The students enjoyed playing this game with their own boards.

4 NEWS FROM THE STUDIO by Ms. Camp Dear Families of North Holland, Students in Kindergarten have completed their line unit and are now focused on shapes. This week they created a shape collage. They incorporated their knowledge of line into the artwork as well as worked on cutting and patterning skills. Grade 1 learned the meaning of collaboration. Together they began a class monster by dividing the body parts up into groups. They will name the monster they assemble soon. Look for it in the hallway. Grades 2/3 completed their abstract tree painting. They finished the coloring and painting today. Grades 4/5 have been creating an abstract multiple views portrait painting influenced by famous 20th century artist, Pablo Picasso. They will finish this project up next art class.
