Join us today 3rd ANNUAL TOREADOR TROT Boone s Toreador Trot 5k makes National history this past Saturday With the support of Interactive Health Technologies and Adidas, runners could be fitted with the most advanced heart rate monitor assessment system known as the Spirit System. When worn by the students in PE the heart rate monitor has given immediate feedback to them to empower the students to self-manage their well-being. The students then receive an with the data from that days lesson along with the student s guardian. This is system has opened up better avenues of communication with families to see that the success of their student in school starts with the students overall health. By moving away from the one size fits all approach to physical education and assessment, IHT individualizes the process, creating greater autonomy and personal responsibility while validating the importance of daily physical activity within the school day. It was also exciting to see 79 school age students participate in this year s race There was a 1 mile run added that allowed younger runners to participate with their families and enjoy the race experience. It has always been the primary vision for this race to showcase the hard work that the individual students have put into improving their health and take those skills outside the gym walls. Combine that with the mission of the Celebrate Families Health and Safety Fair there was fun for all ages. The race would not have been able to run as smoothly as it had if it wasn t for all of the support staff at the water stations and intersections that were either Boone Community School District employees or students. It was great hearing the comments from runners as they finished that they enjoyed the cheering from everybody out on the route. Besides being challenged to step out of ones physical comfort zone and assess one s personal fitness level, the Toreador Trot revealed the pride and support the Boone community members have in the education and health of its youth. 4 SIXTH GRADE BOONE MIDDLE SCHOOL Social Studies Math Language Arts In May Social Studies will be exploring European history, culture, and colonialism as well as reviewing some of the major geographic themes. In May we will be working on positive and negative numbers. We will also work with ordered pairs, and if there is time, a bit of geometry. In Language Arts we are finishing up a 5-paragraph research essay on Constellations. We have a new appreciation for the stars in our galaxy. Reading Science Health During the month of May we will continue working with character development as we solve the mystery in the book The Westing Game. We will wrap up the year with this book. In May our science class will be looking at the planets and space travel. During the month of May we will be finishing up by studying the Cardiovascular System. Students will learn about blood types and how blood moves through the chambers of the heart.

5 N E W S L E T T E R Seventh Grade May 2015 Check the calendar for field trips and special events during the month of May. Goeppinger Awards May 1 Eighth grade students who qualify with a grade point average of 3.5 for seventh and eighth grade will be honored. Units of Study for May Science Fish Iowa May 11 Seventh graders will spend the day at Don Williams canoeing, fishing, and eating outdoors. In seventh grade science, we've spent the majority of the second semester studying life science. We are currently learning about ecosystems and will continue with biotic (living) and abiotic (non living) factors and cycling of matter that affect ecosystems. In the final weeks of the school year we will be covering topics such as biological carrying capacity, animal and plant adaptations, and evolution. I have truly enjoyed my first year of teaching Thank you all for your support Talent Show May 22 Students who made it through auditions will be performing for their peers. All 5-8 students will attend. Reading During May, reading classes will be finishing up a Media Literacy unit and moving on to study the nature myths from Greek mythology. Students will need to continue to read at home and work toward their independent reading goals. Geography Memorial Day May 25 NO SCHOOL In Geography, we are just beginning to look at China and with the limited amount of time that we have remaining, we will try to break down the Middle Eastern Countries along with North Africa and Africa South of the Sahara. Math In Math 7 we will be working in our final unit of the year. We will be studying about probability, statistics, and analyzing data. Our focus is on the major characters of the Pantheon. Be looking for those connections to mythology outside of class. Bring them in for extra points

6 May 2015 S E Q 8TH U O I GRADE A C L U B Wrapping up the year Civics will be 'inishing the year with the judicial branch of government. Pre-Algebra will be working on probability and statistics. In reading we are learning different literary devices and using social media to represent our knowledge of them. Science will be 'inishing up our unit on Forces and Motion.

7 May 2015 NURSE N e w s l e t t e r Prescription Medications at school will need to be picked up by the parent during the last week of school, unless you call to make other arrangements. Over the counter medications will be sent home with the students on their locker clean-out day. Please call the school if you prefer to pick them up in person. IMPORTANT END OF THE YEAR INFORMATION PARENTS OF Incoming 7th GRADE STUDENTS All 7th grade students are now required by Iowa law to provide proof of having a state mandated Tdap booster BEFORE the first day of 7 th grade. Students who do not have this documentation to the office WILL BE EXCLUDED FROM SCHOOL until I have received written documentation of this. You may schedule this booster with you family physician. If your health insurance does not cover vaccines, Home Care of Boone offers all immunizations for free or at a low cost. You may make an appointment by calling Go to the following website Center for Disease Control site for more information: Tdap Secondary School Requirement Questions and Answers FOR THE PARENTS OF 8 TH GRADE STUDENTS Iowa law requires that any student entering ninth grade provide the school with proof of a dental check-up. A certificate of proof, to be signed by your dentist or oral hygienist, will be mailed to you with their last report card. You may return these to the high school nurse s office after your next dental appointment. YOU CAN PREVENT CANCER Did you know there is a virus that can cause cancer, that almost everyone will be infected with at some point in their lives? This virus is called the human papillomavirus (HPV). Often there are no signs or symptoms. GOOD NEWS, you can prevent this virus from causing the most common types of cancer that HPV can cause A vaccine as safe and simple as other childhood vaccines. It is recommended to start this series of 3 doses over a 6 month period starting at age for both boys and girls. You can get the vaccine at your doctor s office or at Boone Public Health. There will be a day in August before school starts that will be devoted to the incoming 9th graders. The students will then be able to pick up their schedules and find their classrooms. The 9th graders will spend nearly their entire day in the G building, which is located on the SW corner of the high school. Career Plans for Eighth Graders Thank you for reviewing your student s 4-year plan with them. They will re-visit these plans each year in high school and are welcome to make changes as they register for each school year. They can access their plan at IHaveAPlanIowa.Gov. This program also contains information on college searches and financial aid, so encourage your son/daughter to use this valuable resource throughout high school. Eighth graders who are currently in computer class just finished their 4-year plans at the end of April. Parents should have signed those and returned them to the school. Scheduling 7th Graders for 8th Grade We will soon be visiting with seventh graders regarding their wishes next year in the music department. Those who are currently in band or orchestra are welcome to continue in those programs, and all students are welcome to join the chorus. Students who are not in a music class during grades 7 and 8 will have a study hall period. 5th and 6th Grade Guidance Mrs. Gradoville will be visiting with the 6th graders this month about opportunities for 7th grade. She will talk about the eligibility for athletics and other activities as well as classroom expectations for 7th graders. Fifth graders will continue working on character counts activities, including caring, trustworthiness, and respect through positive language. HAPPY SUMMER, EVERYONE
