2 A total of 4,695 students from abroad, representing 132 countries and 476 international faculty and staff representing 62 nations, claim Purdue University as their home this fall semester. The University s total international student enrollment ranks: 1st in the Big Ten 1st among all public institutions 3rd in the nation The international student body comprises 12% of the total number of enrolled students, an all time high. International undergraduate students comprise 6.5% of the total undergraduate body, or 2,005 students. A total of 2,690 international graduate and professional students represents 37% of all students at this level of study. Since 1996 international student enrollment has increased by 105% at the undergraduate level and 40% at the graduate and professional level. Slightly more than 70% of all international students hail from Asia. Engineering (45.6%), Science (16.1%), Management (13.8%), Liberal Arts (6.9%), and Agriculture (4.8%) enroll the highest percentages of students from abroad. Thirty-three countries have 20 or more students represented and all but two of the top ten sending countries (Turkey and Canada) are Asian. India ranks first (929) in total enrollment while the People s Republic of China (707) is second. South Korea (515), Indonesia (268), Malaysia (236), Taiwan (198), Turkey (153), Pakistan (124), Canada (86), and Japan (81) round out the top ten. China (83), India (65), South Korea (62), Canada (22), Spain (21), Germany (18), Japan (17), France (17), the United Kingdom (12), and Italy (10) are the top ten sending countries for international faculty and staff. Biological Sciences (44), Chemistry (42), Computer Sciences (27), Mechanical Engineering (24), Agronomy (21), and Mathematics (21) have the greatest number of scholars from abroad.
