1 5th Grade News Week of 12/11/2017 through 12/15/2017 Math: This week we will be reviewing for and taking our 9 weeks test. Our students have worked very hard this 9 weeks! If your student needs extra help, they can always get onto studyisland.com at home and do some of the assignments we have issued! Math Honors: We have just ended the last unit for the calendar year! We will, however, be testing over past units this week. Please encourage your kids to practice on Study Island to brush up fractions and decimals! Reading: We are having End of Nine Weeks Testing this week. The test will cover fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and persuasive writing. Parents, please make sure your children get plenty of sleep and do their best to ROCK the reading tests. This test cannot be retaken. HONORS reading: Our 9 week test will take place at the end of this week. Remember the 9 week test cannot be retaken, and the honors goal is 90 or above. We will complete our 9 week review, early this week, covering fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and persuasive text, and be ready to ROCK this test. Mrs. Conway s classes are having a blast wearing Christmas shirts, and showing extra kindness this time of year. Thank you for all you do to help and encourage your child to read and complete homework. We will NOT have homework these last two weeks before break. Testing, Christmas shirts, and Christmas Parties...OH my! Even though students are not reading a homework novel, they have library books and should be reading 20 minutes a night or 100 minutes a week. Science: We are taking our semester test this week, so keep an eye out for the review coming home early this week. Our Christmas party theme this year is Ugly Christmas Sweaters! Your student may buy or make their sweater. There will be awards for ugliest and most creative! Social Studies: STAR Students of the Week Pass: David Bowker Pannell: Gabrielle Baez Wallace: Grayson Finley The students simulated being on slavery ship crossing the middle passage during the colonial period last week, and will be looking forward to Colonial Williamsburg this week.

2 5th Grade News Week of 12/11/2017 through 12/15/2017 Coach Lewis: 5th Grade Archery Team Practice Days and Times: Tuesday December 12th 3:30-5:00 Monday December 18th 3:30-5:00 Borden s Art Class 5th grade is continuing with our winter theme in art. Students are given the freedom to draw, paint or color anything that reminds them of winter. Art UIL will be Jan. 20th. Practice will continue on Monday and Thursday until then. Mr. Strum s Music Class: Students have begun discussing musical vocabulary that directly relates to traditional holiday music from right here in Texas and all around the world! 5th MUSIC MEMORY UIL continues! Practice will be on Thursdays from 3:30-5:00

3 5th Grade News Week of 12/11/2017 through 12/15/2017 DeRosa s Corner: December events: 20th - Early Release for students at 1:00pm. Class parties are from 10:00-11:00 School is closed for the holidays from December 21-January 7. Students return on January 8th. Morning Drop off: Please be aware that if you are dropping off your child before 7:30am, there is no one on duty to make sure that your child is safe before the doors open. I ve had several parents comment that students are playing around the parking lot, pushing each other into the line of traffic and climbing on the benches. For their safety, make arrangements so that your child does not arrive to school before 7:30am.

4 Math: On Monday we will be reviewing and Tuesday we will have Topic 8 test. We will be doing a review on Wednesday and Thursday and will start our 9 weeks test on Friday Thank you for everything you do! Reading: Essential Question: How can a person's decisions impact others? Students will take their reading final next week and write an expository essay. We are in desperate need of glue sticks and pencils! Any help would be greatly appreciated! Review vocabulary words for the entire nine weeks! Honors: Students are taking their reading final, writing an essay, and creating their innovation/invention.

5 Science: This week in Science, students will review topics from the 1st Semester in preparation for the 1st Semester Test. Students will receive cumulative review materials to study throughout the week. Upcoming tests: 1st Semester Test Friday, December 15th Social studies Vocab test Monday Review for test Tuesday and Wednesday Thursday and Friday- 9 weeks test STEM: Students will take what they have learned from Kano Code and create a new app that must contain specific parts. The most creative app wins!

6 Mr. & Mrs. Strums Singers- Mabank Intermediate School The 6th Grade Choir Concert is December 14th at 7:00 p.m. in the Mabank High School Auditorium. It is going to be a wonderful night FULL of holiday music! We are especially excited to be showing off our new uniforms! You don t want to miss it!! Practice will be on Thursdays from 3:30-5:00 Mrs. Borden s Art Class NEWS Congratulations to my art UIL team, Kaylen Lyons, Bryan Stuart, Hannah Thompson and Logn Hensel, they came in a close 2nd place as a team. Kaylen Lyons placed 1st and Bryan Stuart came in 3rd place in the individual competition scores. 6th grade is working on graphic design still. They completed their Christmas posters and are now working on lettering styles by creating graffiti style fonts and writing their names with them. DeRosa s Corner: December events: 9th - Craft Fair from 9-2 at the Intermediate 12th - Band concert at the Intermediate starting at 6:00pm Students need to arrive by 5:40 14th - 6th grade and Honor Choir concert at the high school at 7:00pm Students need to arrive by 6:15pm. 20th - Early Release for students at 1:00pm.
