In England Wales and Northern Ireland Levels are one of the principal entry examinations for most universities. GCE Level and O - Level examinations were first sat in O - Levels were replaced by the General Certificate of Secondary Education GCSE in 1988 but Levels were retained. Levels represent the Gold Standard for secondary school educational attainment in Britain.
