STUDENTS WHO ARRIVE TARDY AFTER 8:30 AM MUST COME IN THROUGH THE FRONT DOOR, BE SIGNED IN BY A PARENT AT THE FRONT WINDOW AND OBTAIN A TARDY SLIP BEFORE PROCEEDING TO CLASS. For the safety of our students, when the office does not receive notification of an absence, the office will call the home/ cell numbers listed to verify the absence.
2 Counselor Corner Attention all Third and Fourth Grade Parents and Students! TWO IMPORTANT TESTING DATES! #1: The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) Grade 4 February 23, 2017 NAEP dates have been identified and will take place in your child s classroom on February 23, Please mark your calendar with this important date in February. (See attached Parent Letter) #2: TerraNova Grade 3 and 4 March 6-10, 2017 Testing days for TerraNova are March Please avoid scheduling doctor appointments and family trips during the week of testing. Test Tips Get a good night s sleep. Eat a nutritious breakfast. Arrive to school on time (bell rings at 8:30). Relax.
3 Specialists Corner STEM 4th graders have been sharing what they know about oil such as how it is used, where it comes from, and other important facts. We've discussed the importance of oil as an energy source and extraction risks that sometimes lead to accidents and huge oil spills. We also read about Prince William and discussed the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Students will begin researching a major oil spill that has happened and the effects it has had on the environment. 3rd graders have completed their volcanoes, drew volcano diagrams, wrote descriptively about its functioning parts, and then had the opportunity to make them erupt! During their volcano observations, inquiry questions included its appearance, shape, texture, angles, differences, and measurements. Students had fun watching their volcanoes erupt using a combination of baking soda and vinegar while following they measured the lava flow! FLES 1st grade students have been introduced to winter vocabulary along with songs. We will continue building our vocabulary by using technology to build a snowman, clothing used in the winter, and activities we enjoy doing in the winter. Kinder students are also learning about the winter season by singing songs and reading books.
4 Specialists Corner continued... ART In art, all grade levels will begin working on this year s Square 1 art projects. Students will be completing projects in class that will be sent to a company for reproduction. Parents will receive information later about ordering different products featuring your child s artwork. Pre-K students will once again visit the art room to participate in this project. As a reminder: If your child took his/her art smock home over the holiday break to be washed, please be sure that it is brought back as there were many students without smocks again this week. Thank you! MUSIC In music, all grade levels are beginning more in-depth studies about traditional notation. The students are learning how to read and perform on instruments to include whole, half, quarter, eighth notes and corresponding rests in 4/4 time. We are discussing how music relates to math and that the notes are also another way to learn about fractions! Students are also helping to decide which instruments would make appropriate accompaniments to the songs they are learning. Very soon the Fourth graders will be bringing home a soprano recorder to continue what they have learned in class. They will be given assignments to improve their tone quality as well as how to read traditional notation for their instrument. Third grade will be given instruction on the recorder during music class. The younger grades are using a variety of rhythm instruments and are beginning to play on some of the barred xylophones and metallophones. Everyone seems to be enjoying the hands on activities!
5 Math Minute Specialists Corner continued... The Standard for Mathematical Practice for January is SMP4: Model with mathematics, or I can show my work in many ways. It is this standard that helps us see what each child is thinking as they reason about math. Children go through three basic stages in their mathematical development: concrete, representational, and abstract. In the concrete stage, children use manipulatives to model the problem. In the representational stage, they progress to using numbers or other notations to represent a quantity. Many adults become concerned, and some social media is crawling with examples, with children using notations that they may not be familiar with. For example, when teaching place value, we use place value blocks. These are concrete (actually plastic) blocks that model the number. A cube represents 1 unit, a rod or a long, represents 10 units, and a flat represents unit = 1 1 rod flat = 100 Children moved from using the Base 10 blocks (concrete) to drawings (representations) of them. A small square becomes a 1, a rectangle becomes a 10, and a larger square becomes a 100. A child may represent the number 122 as. So, why don t we just have them right the number 122? Being able to visualize the number as parts that can be broken down and rearranged is an important skill. The ability to model numbers in many ways helps children understand how to manipulate numbers to make sense of problems and aid in solving them. As children move into higher more abstract math studies, these foundational skills will help them visualize what is happening with the math and will assist them in problem solving. Math website for January is This site that seems to have fun, entertaining games for children to brush up on their math skills. Always remember, you are your child s best game partner. Puzzles are a great way to build reasoning skills. With the colder weather, family puzzle nights could be the beginning of a great tradition. Happy math times.
6 Wellness Corner Winter fun is beckoning and the impending snowfall will create a wonderland of activity for the entire family sledding, snowboarding, and snowman making. Follow these easy tips to keep safe and stay fit during the cold months: Practice good hand hygiene by washing hands before eating, after sharing toys, coughing, and blowing a runny nose. Consider the wind chill factor when deciding how long kids (and adults) can play outdoors. Dress warmly in layers of clothes. Waterproof pants and jackets are great top layers and protect wetness from seeping into other clothing. Don t forget a hat! To avoid frostbite, check your kids regularly to make sure mittens and socks are dry and noses are not too red. If your kids decide to go sledding, make sure the hill is not too steep, covered with trees or rocks, or near a busy road. Avoid sports injuries by wearing helmets and other properly fitted equipment during activities such as skiing, snowboarding and ice hockey.
