1 Prune Hill Penguin News May 2, NW Tidland St Camas, WA phone fax Dear Penguin Families, The month of May here at Prune Hill begins to feel like the race to the finish, as we observe our students working hard at school and extracurricular activities, continuing state testing in grades 3-5, and the various classroom activities, field trips and celebrations. Speaking of testing, staff here at Prune Hill in all grades have shifted our instruction from past state standards to the Common Core State Standards, and will continue to monitor and adjust instruction based on our internal student growth data and performance. The Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA) given this year in grades 3, 4, and 5 will yield results from our past system of MSP. We know that these summative assessment results are what the public sees as published in newspapers, websites and media. We are confident that our district and classroom assessments showing student growth over two points in time gives us a more complete picture of our students as learners. While many surrounding (including social media) us have already formed quite strong opinions about Common Core and SBA, and perhaps politicized the issue, we will continue to work through these early years of new standards/assessment system before any conclusions are drawn. We have high expectations for our students, both academically and behaviorally, and will continue to strive for continuous improvement as a school. Our kids and families work hard and it shows! As we begin the process of staffing for next year, one of the more important responsibilities that we have as educators is placing students in classrooms for the following school year. Our goal is that every child will be in the most supportive, challenging and successful learning environment possible. This process takes much time and careful, thoughtful planning by students current teachers to create balanced, teachable classroom groups. Many factors are considered: student achievement, learning styles, leaders and followers, behavior and social skills, class size, and the number of boys and girls. Often, changes are made as enrollment and staffing changes occur over the summer. If you have input about your child that you believe we should consider when making placement decisions, you may pick up a classroom placement form in the office. Input should focus on information that we may not already have 1 about your child that would impact their learning as we create balanced academic groups of students. Please do not make specific teacher requests, as they may not be considered due to the challenges it poses. Our teachers are all experienced, highly qualified, and provide an excellent education for all of our students. One teacher may be a perfect match for one of your children, and not necessarily so for their sibling. Therefore we do not guarantee the same teachers for families, as this may not be the best academic placement for your child. Furthermore, staffing assignments (including Highly Capable assignments) are not made until after projected enrollment figures come in. 4 Penguins to Hawks The Prune Hill 5th grade Penguins who will be attending Skyridge next year are invited to a parent night for incoming students Wednesday, June 1, 6:00-7:00 p.m. in the Skyridge gym. Lunch Accounts In order to avoid difficulties, please be aware of your child s account balance and make sure they have enough money to pay for lunches through the end of the school year. Any money remaining in their account will be rolled over for next year at any Camas school. Avoid the line at Back-to-School night by leaving a balance for the first few lunches in September. 5 PTA- May and June News! Spring Carnival Friday, June 10th Join us on Friday evening, June 10th from 5:30PM-8:00PM at the "Prune Hill Pier" for this year's Beach Boardwalk themed carnival!! This event for the whole family is a great time to celebrate the hard work that our Prune Hill students have put in throughout the school year. Come and enjoy carnival games, inflatables, a photo booth, food, entertainment, raffle items and more. Watch for more information on this event coming home with your child in May. Also, please watch your and Facebook for upcoming information on how you can still get involved with putting on this great event. For questions, or more information please contact Megan Ryan at megward13@hotmail.com. 5 th Grade Celebration Monday, June 13th Prune Hill PTA is honored to support a celebration of the 5th graders and their accomplishments throughout elementary school. Celebration begins with an assembly in the gym from 11:00am to 12:00pm followed by lunch and activities at Grass Valley Park. Parents/Guardians are invited to the assembly and welcome to volunteer at the park. Volunteers are needed on June 13th from 12-3:00pm at the 5th Grade Celebration at Grass Valley Park immediately following the 5th Grade Ceremony at school. Parents of 4th Grade students are encouraged to volunteer and support the 5th grade class. 6 5th Grade Track Meet This year s 5 th Grade Track Meet will be at the Doc Harris Stadium on Friday June 3 rd. The field events will start around 9:15 a.m. and end around 10:30. Running events will start approximately around 10:20 and end around 1:45. Students will meet in their homeroom at 8:45am so we can leave the school shortly after. Your entire class should sit together. Competitors should only be on the field when involved in an event. Parents and special guests can sit in the grandstand. We will leave the Doc Harris Stadium around 1:45 after we finish lunch and clean up. Students will ride the bus back to Prune Hill, continue with their day and then will proceed home in their normal fashion. Order Of Events 1).
