3 Fraction Values Practice 1 A fraction is a part of a whole. In the shape below, one of the four parts of the square is shaded. So 1 4 of the square is represented. = 1 numerator (parts you are talking about) 4 denominator (total parts in a whole) Directions: Write the fraction representing the shaded portion of each shape. Write your answer next to each shape

4 Working with Equivalent Fractions Practice 2 Equivalent fractions describe the same amount or the same area, but they are expressed in a different number of pieces or parts. Equivalent fractions are equal to each other. 1 2 = 2 4 = 4 8 = 8 16 You can create equivalent fractions by multiplying or dividing the numerator and the denominator by the same number. 3 x 2 = 6 so 3 = = 4 so 12 = 4 4 x 2 = = Directions: Write the equivalent fraction for each given fraction below. 5 Reducing Fractions to Lowest Terms/Greatest Common Factor (GCF) Practice 3 Fractions are in their lowest terms when no factor greater than 1 will divide evenly into both the numerator and the denominator. Examples: 2, 7 10, 2 7, 3 8 All fractions with 1 as the numerator and all fractions where the numerator is 1 less than the denominator are in lowest terms. Examples: 1 2, 1 3, 3 4, 7 8 To reduce fractions, find the greatest common factor (GCF). Divide the numerator and the denominator by the greatest common factor. Reduce 12 16, GCF of 12 and 16 is 4. factors of 12: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, = 3 so 12 = 3 factors of 16: 1, 2, 4, 8, = Directions: Find the greatest common factor and reduce each fraction to lowest terms.
