3 What are GCSEs? Background During the ages of 11 to 14 pupils study work that is set by their school but it must follow a national curriculum. Between the ages of 14 and 16 two things change: Pupils study subjects in more depth Most pupils work towards achieving some sort of external qualification, GCSE or BTEC

4 GCSEs The General Certificate in Secondary Education (GCSE) replaced the O- Levels and CSEs in GCSEs are externally set examinations that are regulated by Central Government

5 GCSEs Most pupils take GCSEs in most of their subjects It usually takes two school years to study for a GCSE 5 school terms There is usually a combination of controlled assessments and final examinations Controlled assessments could include long essays, fieldwork reports, art products, or practical investigations

6 The Core Curriculum All pupils take: English English, English language, English literature Mathematics Some pupils also take statistics Science Core Science, Additional Science Some pupils replace one or both or these with a BTEC science qualification

7 Additional Core Subjects All pupils also have the following provision: Religious education Physical education PSHE Careers Citizenship Plus their 4 optional subjects

8 GCSE Grades GCSEs are graded from A* to G. C grade is considered a good pass Many post-16 courses require a B grade Many courses and colleges require 5 good passes at C grade including English and maths.

9 GCSE Tiers Some of the subjects have tiered papers. Each tier has a target range of grades that can be awarded. The aim of this is to allow the pupil to enter the exam in which their ability can be tested. Many subjects have two tiers of exams Higher A* to D Foundation C to G Other subjects have just one tier (or all grades) All through A* to G

10 BTEC courses BTEC courses are vocationally based and each one counts as one GCSE. They are mostly assignment-based with some examined material. They are graded using Pass, Merit and Distinction which broadly equate to C, B and A, GCSE grades.

12 GCSE Science Mr Wade At Pittville, Year 10 students are now embarking on the AQA Core Science GCSE course. This consists of three taught topics: B1 Biology (25% of grade) C1 Chemistry (25% of grade) P1 Physics (25% of grade) ISA Controlled Assessment (25% of grade)

13 GCSE Science The three taught topics will be examined at the end of Year 10. The Controlled Assessment, known as an ISA (Investigative Skills Assessment) can take place at any time during Year 10. It consists of a research component, a practical investigation and two short written papers.

14 GCSE Science B1 Biology This topic consists of a number of sub-topics including: Healthy Bodies Coordination and control Drugs: use and misuse Energy Evolution

15 GCSE Science C1 Chemistry This topic consists of a number of sub-topics including: Rocks and building materials Metals from rocks Fuels from oil Chemicals from alkenes The Earth and atmosphere

16 GCSE Science P1 - Physics This topic consists of a number of sub-topics including: Heat Energy and efficiency Generating electricity Waves and radiation The expanding universe

17 BTEC Principles of Applied Science This course carries an equivalence to GCSE but is assessed in a different way. The course consists of four units: Unit 1 Principles of Science exam 25% Unit 2 Chemistry and our Earth 25% Unit 3 Energy and our universe 25% Unit 4 - Biology and our environment 25% Units 2-4 will be assessed through written assignments which are completed in science lessons.

21 How can you help? Reading The exam is centred around non-fiction texts, so regular reading of non-fiction texts is crucial. Reading for pleasure helps with vocabulary acquisition, understanding of punctuation and sentence structure, as well as encouraging creative ideas.

25 What can I do to help my child? Research has shown that pupil attainment is highly influenced by parent support The greatest improvement in grades comes from parent support at home

26 What can I do to help my child? Attendance Equipment do they have everything they need for school, especially if they have controlled assessments or exams Organisation a lot more is expected of pupils in Year 10 and they may need help Make sure there is somewhere quiet they can study

27 Where to work when at home? Ideally where they can be observed Needs to be at a table or desk Not where they can see a TV Music can help, but should not be distracting No access to games consoles such as Playstation or Wii Not too much time on the computer

28 What can I do to help my child? Take an interest Work with teachers Keep your child focused on where they want to be at the end of Year 11 Be there for them if they have worries or are finding the work difficult Keep them aware of these study tips:

29 Study tips Plan homework and revision and manage time well don t start every task the day before it is due in Work in 30 minute chunks and then take a SHORT break to refresh the mind Don t work late at night Healthy living works plenty of sleep, eat properly and drink plenty of water Use school staff for help and advice!
