1 CURRICULUM POLICY Education at is based on challenge, commitment and choice General Principles of the School Curriculum In the fulfilment of its aims, the School seeks to provide for all pupils a curriculum which: provides an experience of high quality; is broad and balanced and includes English, mathematics and science, in accordance with Section 78 of the Education Act emphasises the importance of science and sports in accordance with the schools status as a sports and science academy. provides the means for children to develop morally, spiritually, culturally, artistically and physically as well as intellectually; provides increasing degrees of choice as pupils progress through the School; supports students who are gifted and talented in the areas of sports, dance, languages and music through the use of a flexible curriculum is accessible to all pupils, relevant and well-delivered; meets the requirements regarding religious education and collective worship; prepares pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of their future lives; embraces new approaches and opportunities for curriculum development; is influenced by and, in turn, contributes to a culture of achievement for pupils of all abilities; is outward-looking and seeks to broaden pupils horizons; is understood and broadly supported by staff, pupils and parents; provides opportunities for pupils to gain a wide range of recognised qualifications; is complemented by an extensive programme of extra-curricular opportunities. Curriculum Content The curriculum is delivered through the following curriculum area structure: English, Maths including ICT and Business, Science, Humanities including Personal, Social and Health Education, PE, Modern Languages, Creative and Expressive Arts including Drama, Music, Art and Technology. The school follows a two week timetable labelled week A and week B. There are also cross-curriculum dimensions within our curriculum. Students should be able to learn about the following: community participation; enterprise; global dimension and sustainable development; the application of IT. The curriculum is divided into years 7-9 (Key Stage 3), years 10 and 11 (Key Stage 4) and years 12 and 13 (Key Stage 5) Page 1 of 7

2 Key Stage 3 Students are placed in 6 mixed ability tutor groups when they enter the school based on the following criteria: KS2 levels Baseline and benchmarking assessment Feedback from previous school SEN/D provision Students are taught in these groups for the first term. The mixed ability groups operate in two bands 3 groups in each. The exception is Technology, Music and Art where students are taught in 8 mixed ability groups of a smaller size 4 in each of the bands. Baseline assessment is carried out including: CATs Reading and Spelling assessments Maths assessment including Progress in maths tests Science assessment English assessment Benchmarking assessment is carried out in all other subjects during term 1 except for French where it is recognised that students enter the school with a variety of language experiences. Benchmarking is done shortly after this point. At the start of the second term students move into two groups of sets based on ability in Maths which also includes IT and in English which includes Humanities and French. There are 3 sets in each Band, M,N,P being in Band A and Q, R and S being in Band B. Students are also placed in a sets for PE derived from three mixed ability tutor groups. Students remain in mixed ability groups for all other subjects. The proportion of lessons is as follows: Year 7 Maths 7 IT 1 English 7 I of which is Accelerated reading French 4 History 3 Geography 4 RE 2 Science 6 Dance 2 Drama 1 PSHE 2 Art 3 Design 1 Food 1 Music 1 Textiles 1 Page 2 of 7

3 Students do not remain in the same sets throughout KS3 regular review is undertaken by the KS3 Progress leader particularly at the end of Year 7 when an extra set is introduced in core and foundation areas. IEP is provided by supporting students within their lessons or withdrawing identified groups of students from English and Maths for short periods for booster work. Intervention is done with Catch-up students through English and Maths supported by the SEN/D department. IT has introduce computing modules to its SOWs throughout KS3. Year 8 Students are now set separately for English including MFL, Humanities including Geography, History and RE and Maths including Science and IT. The remaining groups carry through from Year 7. A seventh Set set L is introduced to ensure all students receive the support they require. Thus in the Upper band are sets L, M and N and in the Lower Band sets P, Q, R and S. Sets L,M,N,P and Q have German as a second language and set R have conversational Spanish. Set S continues with the Accelerated reader programme and two extra period of English. 4 Year 9 In Year 9 there are no mixed ability groups apart from in Art/Technoloy/Music to which Dance is now added. PSHE become part of the Humanities setting and Drama part of English. Sciences are taught as 3 separate subjects as students begin the GCSE course. Students in the top set for Humanities also take a GCSE in Philosophy and Ethics. Maths 6 Biology 2 Chemistry 2 Physics 2 IT 1 English 6 sets R and S = 7 French 4 German 3 for sets L - Q Literacy 2 for sets R and S Drama 1 History 4 except set L=3 Geography 4 RE 2 except set L Philosophy and Ethics 4 for set L Dance 1 PSHE 1 except set L=1 Art 2 Design 1 Music 1 Textiles 1 Food 1 Dance 1 The introduction of different pathways for students of differing ability at KS3 is to encourage challenge and choice. There will be students within KS3 who are supported with their training demands by the introduction of study periods within the school day. These students are offered the option of not picking up a second language but have study time instead. Where students have exceptionally heavy training demands they may have study time instead of PE as they are generally completing far in excess of 2 hours of physical activity per week. This is not a preferred option at KS3 as PE in school has a number of other benefits to students such as social. All such arrangements are made in consultation with parents with the support of coaches. Key Stage 4 All students continue to study English, Maths, Science, PE, PSHE and RE. Students in sets L Q continue to study three separate sciences. Those in R and S study Core Science. This is reviewed each year. Students in sets L,M and N continue to study a language, either French or German. They are also able to continue to study a second language. Students in sets P, Q, R and S may also continue to study a language but are currently also offered the option of a BTEC in Health Page 4 of 7

5 and Social Care or Media. This choice is changed from year to year and is dependent on student interest and ability profile of the Year group. Some students will have IEP time here instead of an option although this is currently under review. All students opt for History or Geography with a small group choosing a Skills for Life or alternative programme instead. Skills for Life was replaced with Duke of Edinburgh in 2014 and discussions are currently underway for the September 2015 offer.the most able students have the opportunity to study both History and Geography alongside French in an option labelled fast track which results in less time allocated to each of the three areas. Students then have a free choice of two option subjects and these are offered based on student choice from the following list: GCSES - Art, Business, Dance, Drama, German, PE, Media studies, Textiles, Geography, IT, Music, Design and RS. BTEC Health and Social Care, Media, Performing Arts Dance, Performing Arts Drama, Sport. Those students who successfully completed GCSE Philosophy and Ethics in year 9 have had the option to do AS RS. Current Year 11 is the final year who has been able to do this due to the government s change in A level structure. A small group of less able students in year 11 also had the opportunity to take a Level 1 BTEC Home Cooking course. Current Year 10 have been offered Food Technology GCSE A decision was made not to replace IT with Computing. It was felt that Computing GCSE would not attract a sufficient enough take up. There is evidence that Students who have studied IT have gone on to take computer science at university. Maths English Biology, Chemistry and Physics or Core and Applied Science PSHE 1 RE 1 A choice of 4 option subjects: 1.French, German, Health and Social Care or Media 2. History, Geography or Skills for life Or Fast Track History, Geography and French 3. and 4. Two subjects from the following: GCSE Art, Business Studies, Dance, Drama, German, Media, Textiles, Food, Geography, IT, Music, PE, RE, Design. BTEC L2 Health and Social Care, Performing Arts Dance, Performing Arts Drama, Media, Sport. 8 includes 1 period of Additional Maths for set L and Entry level maths for set S 8 includes English literature and English Language for all sets except S who study Language and take Entry Level English 8 5 Page 5 of 7

6 KS5 Students choose AS/A2 and BTEC subjects from 5 option blocks. Each subject is delivered 9 hours per fortnight. In recent years there has been an increasing programme of collaboration with two local secondary school sixth forms Montsaye Academy and Latimer Arts College. At present students from study Sociology and Applied Health and Social Care at Montsaye. French is teaching is shared between Montsaye and as is PE teaching, Philosophy and Ethics teaching is shared with Latimer.Students from Montsaye and Latimer travel to for Economics, Accounts and Further Maths.All students travel for a variety of courses outlined on the table below. The schools policy for entry to KS5 in September 2015 is that the majority of students will start their course stuying 4 subjects. Entry for AS examination will be discussed once further detail has been received from exam boards regarding syllabuses etc. Option blocks are fixed in advance of student choices but then may be reviewed to take into account clashes of choice. Discussion is already underway to consider further sharing of subjects which do not attract large numbers this is to ensure that the school does not lose sixth form teaching expertise in these areas. s that will fall into this category are A level Art, Music, RS, PE. will also become the centre for delivering Further Maths and Economics which are not offered in the other two schools. Collaboration discussions have centred on bringing in line entry criteria, travel between the schools to allow for a cost efficient model, communication between subject leaders in each of the schools and tracking and monitoring of students who travel to other schools.
