1 1 Create an Assignment This tutorial was created using Mozilla Firefox Other browser s displays may differ somewhat in presentation. Some images have been cropped for clarity and don t represent the entire browser window. Take aways from this tutorial: I. Create an assignment in a course area including: II. III. a. Detailed instructions such as i. Number of pages ii. Font type and/or font size iii. Spacing iv. Other content such as tables or images v. File type. i.e. Word (.doc or.docx), PDF, etc. vi. How to attach the assignment for turn in. b. The due date. c. Late penalties if any. Submit a sample assignment as a student. Grade submitted student assignment. I. Create an Assignment For the purpose of this tutorial, we will ask students to complete an assignment in any word processing software, like Word, save this file and submit it by attaching the completed assignment file to the submission link. NOTE: There is a free MS Office compatible suite that students can download at openoffice.org. 1. Access your developmental course. 2. Ensure Edit mode is On If you are using the template, click Assessments on the course menu situated on the left of the screen, otherwise, any other content area designated by you for assignment submissions. 4. On the Action Bar, hover over the Create Assessment tab chevrons to enable the drop-down list Select Assignment
2 2 6. On the Create Assignment page under option 1, Assignment Information, give the assignment a name. This name will appear as the header of the Grade Center column Type in the specific instructions for the assignment. 8. If you desire to attach files for student use it is recommended that you use the Attach File button located in the lower left corner of the text editor controls box. Place the 8 cursor in the text editor in the position you want the attachment to go to and click on the icon Under option 3, Grading enter the points possible for the assignment. Provide a rubric. 10. Under option 4 Availability select any options needed such as Number of Attempts and availability limitations such as when the assignment is viewable by the student. For practice purposes select Allow single attempt and pick a suitable range of dates Under option 5, Due Dates, select the due date. If selected, the Due Date will be visible in the Grade Center. It will also copy into the next section, so please, remember to change with every copy Under option 6, Recipients, leave it set to All Students Individually. Chose Groups of students, if using pre-defined Groups Click on Submit 13
3 3 II. Submit a Sample Assignment as a Student. Create a sample assignment by opening Word Document and typing any sentence into it, e.g. This is my practice Assignment submission. Save the assignment as Assignment Demo in a location/folder at your computer that you later access. 1. Log out of Blackboard and log back in as a Test Student. Otherwise, use a different browser, e.g. use Internet Explorer for a student login, and FireFox for instructor login. See Adding a Test Student if you haven t already created your test student ID. 2. Navigate to the Content Area where you created the assignment Open the assignment by clicking on the underlined Assignment Name. It may be helpful to tell students to click the title in the assignment details/instructions. 4. Under Option 2, Assignment Materials, add any comments in the Submission box Attach your assignment by clicking on Attach File -> Browse My Computer Navigate to where your assignment file is saved, select it, and click on Open. The selected document will now upload to Blackboard. 6
4 4 7. The uploaded assignment will appear here Click on Submit. This will bring up the Review Submission History In the Review Submission History window the student can verify that the assignment was submitted successfully. 10. Click OK when finished. 9 10
5 5 III Grade the submitted assignment. 1. In the Control Panel select Grade Center. 2. Select Needs Grading. NOTE: you can use Full Grade Center, or Assignments, but for our purposes, we ll use Needs Grading 2 3. Click on Test Student 3
6 6 4. In order to grade the assignment it must first be downloaded. 4a a. Under Option 2, Review Current Attempt, go to Attached Files and click on the file name. b. When the pop-up opens, select Save File. c. Click OK. Remember where you saved the assignment. 4b Once you have read the assignment, you are ready to enter the grade. 4c 5. Return to the Grade Center and follow steps 1-3 to pull up the Test Student again. Under Option 3, Grade Current Student, enter the grade points. 6. Add your feedback for the student. (Optional) Under Option 4, Instructor Notes, may want to add Grading Notes for your reference (these will not be visible to students). 8. Click on Save and Exit. You have created, submitted, and graded the assignment. 7 8
