4 Presenter Information Thursday, March 18, 2004 Betty Addingn, Nickels Video Streaming Teachers will learn how incorporate video streaming in their lesson plans. Cathy Blankenship Hisry SOLs for the Classroom Teaching hisry middle school students can be challenging and getting them interested begin the journey is difficult. A guided approach of teaching and reviewing throughout the year is a good way keep the required material in mind and is the only way get students the level where they can pass the SOLs. The standards that will be covered in this workshop are: USII Sullivan Carter Ancient Mali: Teaching the New Standards This presentation includes slides, textiles, baskets, ols, and musical instruments from Mali. In addition many printed resources on Ancient Mali will be displayed. The presentation will also include background information, lesson plans, and help with pronunciation. The standards that will be covered in this workshop are: H/SS 3.2,3.4,3.8 Michael Colsn Creative Strategies for Teaching Virginia Studies Creative Strategies for Teaching Virginia Studies will encourage the use of creative writing, role-playing, and music enhance the Virginia Studies curriculum. These strategies will be helpful in making Virginia Studies come life for both teachers and students. This presentation will be most suitable for 4 th grade teachers. Bobbie Jo Cutlip The Standards for Grades 1 and 2 This session will emphasize the importance of early hisry teaching on the students success and possible love of hisry for life. Participants will discuss strategies that have proven effective for meeting success with the K-3 Standards of Learning assessment. Danny Dixon Early Hisry and Settlement of Southwest Virginia This presentation will examine the early hisry and settlement of Southwest Virginia. The presentation will also include an in-depth discussion including settlement patterns, reasons for settlement, economic opportunities, and ways in which the Colonists dealt with the difficulties of the time. Andy Mink Learning Initiatives for the Hisry Classroom Initiatives are fun and engaging activities that provide students with hands-on problems solve individually or as a group. Initiatives emphasize group skill and dynamics that give students a language of learning that can be applied any classroom activity or challenge. This workshop will provide several examples of initiatives, offer models on how tie them in your academic curriculum, and focus on debriefing the initiative maximize understanding. Participants should be ready and willing participate in a hands-on, physical session. Nickels Decisions Software Through role-playing simulations, students learn and apply the lessons of hisry. They examine fundamental hisrical and social studies events and ideas, including the crafting of the U.S. Constitution; the expansion of ancient empires; the building of democracy in developing nations; New World colonization; sustaining the environment; handling peer pressure; and more. Employing an authentic 5-step decision-making model (based on one used by national policymakers day), students gather and analyze information, use examples from hisry assess options, evaluate possible outcomes, and make decisions. Be prepared for some of the most exciting and informed discussions you've ever heard! 4

5 Tom Pitz Performing as Thomas Jefferson Mr. Jefferson will address a group of congenial strangers who are interested in educating the young, as he would have greeted them in March of After making his prepared remarks, Mr. Jefferson will invite questions and comments from the audience. Activities will be presented that are derived from early methods of finding direction, estimating distances from maps, games, and using currency from the 18 th century. Stephanie Powers, Lori Teaster, Heather Thomas, Gina Tuell Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic in Social Studies Cross-Curriculum Integrated Lessons and activities about the past and current presidents and the United States in conjunction with the Virginia Social Studies Standards of Learning. Activities focused on George Washingn, Abraham Lincoln, President George Bush and the United States, including Betsy Ross and Martin Luther King, Jr. will be covered in this presentation. Joe Presn Sixth Grade U.S. Hisry This workshop will examine different types of teaching strategies. Jigsaw teaching, graphic organizers, and mini-projects will be modeled and discussed for adaptability the different levels of social studies curricula. Also included will be several examples of technology s usefulness in enhancing lesson plans. Participants should bring successful lesson ideas of their own share during the workshop. Karen Ranocci, Barbara Tippin, Marsha Viers, Susan Weaver Integrating Social Studies in the Kindergarten Curriculum See how children can put the Social Studies Standards of Learning in practice through hands-on learning centers and makeand-take activities. Share ideas about how keep kindergarten a journey, not a race. Tate Swecker Foldables It's Not Quite Origami" --Good readers use text-specific and task specific strategies make sense of text. To facilitate these strategies, teachers often use graphic organizers. In this session teachers will learn create and use 'foldables,' three dimensional graphic organizers created by Dinah Zike and found in Glencoe/McGraw-Hill textbooks, help their students with note-taking and reading strategies." Bill Vermillion On-line Testing and the SOLs This presentation will demonstrate the dos and don ts concerning on-line testing in connection with classroom teaching and the Standard of Learning Martha Vermillion Hisry Website for Teaching Materials and Worksheets for Virginia Hisry This presentation will review my personal website that contains materials, that are a great review for the fourth grade Virginia Hisry SOLs. 5

7 Teaching American Hisry 2004 Schedule of Events The Appalachian Frontier one-credit course for K-12 Hisry Teachers, April 13-14, 2004 at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center in Abingdon. Teaching American Hisry Spring Workshops presented by Andy Mink May and 24-27, same format as Andy s fall workshops where several school divisions send teachers Wise, Tazewell, and Wythe Counties. Participants need register with their Direcrs of Instruction/Assistant Superintendents for Instruction/Academics. U.S. Hisry Summer Seminar June 20-July 3, 2004, Charlottesville, VA all expenses paid by the Teaching American Hisry Grant.
