MyMathLab Tech Support: MyMathLab Website: COURSE CONTENT: Analysis of functions (linear, quadratic, polynomial, root, rational, exponential, logarithmic) using graphing calculators; partial fractions; synthetic division; conic sections; theory of equations; inequalities; applications. NOTE: Only one of MATH 1710 or MATH 1730 may be used to satisfy degree requirements. Prerequisite: A minimum Math Placement score 40. [G] REQUIRED MATERIALS: You will need to bring the book and your TI 83 OR TI 84 calculator to each class. We will emphasize use of the calculator. Note: TI-Inspire, TI86, TI89 and certain CASIO calculators are NOT allowed. See me if there are any questions concerning your calculator. Also, as stated in the Class Schedule, a laptop computer is required for this class to complete in-class assignments and exams. STUDENT POPULATION: Lower division students. This course is a prerequisite for Elementary Calculus, Trigonometry, and will fulfill a lower division mathematics requirement in some degree programs (confirm through your academic advisor). METHODS: This course is taught using MYMATHLAB for assignments, quizzes and tests. There will be seven tests given throughout the semester, including the final exam. The final exam is MANDATORY AND CUMULATIVE. Homework MUST be completed by the announced date.

2 GRADING: There will be homework assignments from each section covered, which constitute 25% of the final score, fourteen quizzes worth 20% of the final score, six chapter tests (five after the dropped exam) worth 30% of the final score, and a COMPREHENSIVE final exam worth 25% of the final score. The lowest of the six chapter tests will be dropped. The final exam cannot be dropped. MAKE-UP POLICY: There is no make-up allowed on chapter tests or homework. The only exception is if a student misses the exam for a school-sponsored event. In which case, the student must take the exam BEFORE the missed date; otherwise, this will be the dropped test. There is no provision for missing more than one test. HOMEWORK: Homework will be assigned from each section covered. Again, this homework is on MYMATHLAB. You will be given ample time to complete the assignments; therefore, no extensions will be granted for any reason. So, please do not wait until the night before to begin the homework. Technical difficulties do not warrant extensions. The homework will be due at midnight on the due date. Before the due date, you get unlimited attempts for each homework problem. Your lowest 4 homework grades will be dropped at the end of the semester. Quizzes: There will be a total of 14 open book quizzes during the semester. You must complete them in class or out of class before the expiration dates which will be given. You may have 5 attempts on each quiz. Your lowest 2 quiz grades will be dropped at the end of the semester. Note: You will not be given help on your quizzes or tests. But you may get tutoring for a quiz after you take the first attempt and before you take the other attempts. Tests: There will be 6 closed book tests as listed on the course outline below. You must be present in class to take each exam. You get one attempt for each test for which you are present in class to take. Your lowest Chapter Test grade will be dropped at the end of the semester. If you miss a chapter test, that is the test which will be your drop grade. The one dropped test is to take care of emergency situations which might come up in your life. No Make-up for a missed homework assignment, since you may drop a total of 4 during the semester. No Make-up for a missed quiz, since you may drop a total of 2 during the semester. No Make-up for a missed test, since one chapter test grade will be dropped. No Make-up for the Final Exam. You must be present to take this exam at the time required by the University. This time is listed on the course outline below. Put this date on your calendar now. Test Rules: 1) There are 6 chapter tests and a final exam. Test dates are listed on the course schedule below. You must be present in class to take each test. You will receive one attempt at each test. 2) Arrive on time for each test. Any tardiness will cost you working time on the test. Bring pencils, scratch paper, computer and calculator with you. 3) You will need to bring your TI 83 or 84 calculator.

3 4) Absolutely no cell phones allowed during testing. All cell phones must be turned off and put away out of sight during classes and tests. Use of cell phones during a test will result in academic misconduct. 5)You will be allowed to review your test before you leave the class. You may not write down any information pertaining to test questions to take with you when you leave after an exam. You may not share any test information with anyone. Violators will be charged with academic misconduct. 6) Failure to show up for a scheduled test will result in a zero for that test. That missed test will be your drop grade (lowest one chapter test grade dropped at the end of the semester.) There is no provision for missing multiple tests. 7) Once you open the online test, you may not leave that page. Violators will be charged with academic misconduct for opening any other web site while the test is open or sending or receiving . ATTENDANCE: While attendance is not counted as part of the final grade, students are required to be in class each class period. The student is responsible for gathering any missed information announced in class. I do not give out notes nor can I make copies of notes. At the discretion of the instructor, class participation and attendance may be factored in the final grade calculation for borderline students. STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES: Any student with a documented disability with the DRS office is encouraged to speak with me early in the semester so any necessary accommodations can be made. You must have the documentation provided by the DRS office. SOME GROUND RULES: 1. Be respectful of the instructor and other students. Do not try to talk over me or somebody else. 2. Please turn off all cell phones. If your cell phone rings, please turn it off, or go to the hallway if it is an emergency. 3. No food or drink is allowed in the classrooms 4. No cell phone calculators are allowed. Sharing of calculators on exams is not allowed. 5. You must have a valid student ID. It will be required on exam days. ACADEMIC DISHONESTY: Cheating of any fashion will not be tolerated in this course. Any student caught cheating will receive a zero for that assignment, and any other actions deemed necessary by the department or university will be taken. It is the responsibility of the student to read the statement on dishonesty in the U of M Handbook. Requirements: From time to time, I will the class about certain changes in the schedule, no class, etc. Therefore, you are required to check your UofM account regularly. You can have this forwarded to any other account of your choosing. Check with UofM Tech Support for guidance.
