2 Course Overview Prerequisite: ENG 2D Course Developers: Candice Spykers Course Description This course extends the range of analytic reading, writing, listening, oral communication, and higher level thinking skills that students need for success in the secondary school senior academic program. Students: study and interpret challenging texts from contemporary and historical periods, including novels, poems, media works, essays, and plays; conduct research; write persuasive and literary essays; learn fundamental grammar points to improve their writing in preparation for university; compare their writing to university level writing; analyse media critically (e.g., analyse the relationships among media forms, audiences, and media industry practices). An important focus is on understanding the development of the English language. This course profile demonstrates one way in which the expectations from the Grade 11 University course could be organized into units. Ministry Document The Ontario Curriculum Grades 11 and 12 Units: Titles and Time Unit 1 Poetry 20 hours Unit 2 Novel Study 22 hours Unit 3 Shakespeare 22 hours Unit 4 Studies: Persuasion and Manipulation 21 hours Unit 5 Culminating Activity: Comparative 20 hours Unit Overviews Unit 1: Poetry In this unit students will learn about poetic devices and how they are used in a variety of poetic genres. Students will read and analyze poems and write poems of their own. Students examine different movements in poetry and use their knowledge in the creation of a poetry anthology.

Analyzing Poetry Modelling, in class reading, reading aloud, class discussion, group work, handouts. 2. Researching Poetry Library research, group work, carousel. Movements 3. Poetry In class writing activities, writing prompts, group work, editing and drafting, self-reflection. Unit 2: Novel Study In this unit, students will read a selected novel, such as Margaret Atwood s A Handmaid s Tale, Aldous Huxley s Brave New World or Mary Shelley s Frankenstein. Students may use literature circles, narrative writing, and seminar presentations in order to delve deeper into the issues of the chosen text. Activity Assessment Focus 1. the Text 2. 4 Unit Used 1. the Text Literature circles, small group discussion, study questions, quizzes, videos. 2. Exploring Issues in Lectures, articles, research, writing activities. the Text 3. Seminar Group work, research, oral presentations. Unit 3: Shakespeare In this unit, students will read Shakespeare s Macbeth and explore the background and issues related to the text. Students will read much of the text aloud and participate in class discussions as they read. Students will perform scenes from the play and analyze certain key scenes in the play. Performing the Play Discussion of themes Written responses Class discussion Preparation of Performances Unit Used 1. the Play aloud, class discussion, study questions, content quizzes, videos. 2. Analysis of the Play Scene analysis, journal writing, class discussion, comparing video versions. 3. Performing the Play Student performances. Unit 4: Study: Persuasion and Manipulation In this unit, students examine different magazines and techniques of persuasive writing. Students will use their knowledge to write their own informal essays and in the creation of their own original magazine.
