See Western online for schedule). Expense Materials Required: Costs for these materials are the responsibility of the student. Textbook. Atkins Physical Chemistry, 11 th edition, Oxford, publishers, ISBN-13 = Laboratory Manual. Experiments in Physical Chemistry. 8 th edition McGraw-Hill Higher Education, publishers. ISBN:
2 The Primary Goals of CHEM 370: To give the student a basic grounding in the areas of: 1. Thermodynamics 2. Chemical Kinetics Prerequisites for CHEM 374: 1 year of college physics, 1 year of calculus, and CHEM 202 Testing and Grading: There will be regular quiz in the course. (Likely at least at the end of each chapter). These quizzes will add up to 150 points. There will be regular homework assignments during the semester (These assignments will also correspond to the chapters of the text.). Your total number of points possible from the homework assignments will be 100 points. Eight laboratory exercises and a lab final are planned for this semester.. The labs will be scaled so that they are worth 250 points towards your final grade. You must score a minimum of 70% of the lab points to pass the course, regardless of your lecture grade. Four semester examinations will cover the lecture materials presented during the regular semester. The exams will be worth approximately 125 points each. A laboratory syllabus will be made available on the first lab meeting as well as online. Attendance Policy: Although strict attendance is encouraged, illnesses do occur. Keeping this in mind, students will be allowed to make up missed exams, quizzes and homework provided that the absence is an excused documented one. Documentation must be given to the instructor within one week of the absence. Definition of Excused Absences: Excused absences include: documented illnesses, documented family medical emergencies, military commitments, WIU required athletic trips, and other absences excused by the course instructor. 2
3 Course Grading Scale: Total Points Percentage (%) Grade A A B B B C C C D D D F An incomplete grade will NOT be given to a student with a failing grade. No incomplete will given to a student without documented evidence of an emergency that requires that the student be away from the university or requires that the student miss the final examination. Students shall notify the instructor of the emergency as soon as possible and prior to the final examination. Classroom and Course Policies: Any student convicted of academic dishonesty will receive a failing grade and may be subjected to further academic penalty, including expulsion. See the WIU Academic Integrity Policy: CHEATING WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. Data storage or data transfer devices (including but not limited to: notes, cell phones, graphing calculators, ipods, and similar devices) are NOT to be used in CHEM 370. Laptops and/or recording devices may be used for note taking if preferred, assuming it does not interfere with other students. Cell phones should be turned off and put away during all class meetings. The use of any data storage or data transfer devices during any quiz, laboratory exercise, test or the final examination shall constitute CHEATING. No head covering of any sort (including but not limited to: hats, caps, hoods, and scarves) may be used during the taking of a quiz, exam, or the final examination without specific permission of the instructor. Assigned seating, rearrangement of seats, and closing of selected seats and areas of the classroom are the option of the instructor. 3
