Even within that time frame it may take up to 24 hours for a response so please plan accordingly. Course description: General Education S1. An intensive analysis of the microeconomics theory that explains the market's determination of prices, resource allocation, and distribution of goods and services. (FA and SP) Text(s): 1. Bundle: Principles of Microeconomics, Loose-Leaf Version + LMS Integrated Aplia(tm), 1 Term Printed Access Card (Mankiw), 8th ed., Cengage Publishing, ISBN To access this particular Aplia course, Course Key: EHSY-YWJF-MVJQ Connect to Please note there are two parts to registering for Aplia. The Course Key above puts you in the right course which you can use for about a week without paying. Please be sure to select Section A when enrolling. Then you need use the Access Code from your Aplia Card purchased with your textbook in order to pay for Aplia. This payment allows you to continue to access Aplia throughout the semester. 2. A calculator (NOT A CELL PHONE) that can add, subtract, multiply, and divide. You can have a fancier one if you like (TI-85) but a simple one will do. No devices which have communication abilities will be allowed during quizzes or the final exam so your calculator can only be a calculator! 3. Colored pens, pencils, or markers. (We do lots of graphing...colors make the graphs clearer.) You should bring your calculator and colored pencils to each class. Note: Cell phones or other electronic devices should not be used in the classroom without my specific approval. It is distracting to me and to your classmates. Recommended Materials: Study Guide to Accompany Mankiw s Principles of Microeconomics (any edition). I strongly recommend purchasing the Study Guide. It includes problems and multiple choice questions for each chapter with answers provided. It is a great way to practice the material especially if you find the electronic Aplia homework does not fit your learning style. nomics+study+guide

2 Policies on attendance and missed assignments/exams: You are expected to attend class and are responsible for all material that is covered in class that might not be included in the book or may be slightly different from what is included in the book. If you would like to meet with me outside of class for further clarification on course material, I am available during office hours. If, however, you choose not to attend class, I will not make myself available to teach you the information already covered in class. Missed quizzes will be graded as zeroes. A missed final exam can only be made up under exceptional circumstances, otherwise a grade of zero will apply. Aplia Homework must be completed by the due date. It cannot be made up and missed assignments will receive a score of zero. The Decision Making Process Project can be submitted late, but it will receive a grade reduced by 10% for every 24 hours late. Course Objectives: This course is designed to cover the basics of microeconomics which serves as a foundation for many of your future business courses. Microeconomics helps to provide a broad based understanding of prices, costs, revenues, and profits which is essential for any business. You will learn about: o the economic concepts of comparative advantage and how it impacts international trade o supply and demand and how they determine prices o elasticity and how that impacts policy decisions o how externalities and public goods require government involvement in markets o how firms maximize profits under different market structures Learning Outcomes: The Department of Business, Accounting and Economics has identified four overarching learning goals for all its majors. Demonstrate Global Awareness Analyze Critically Plan Strategically Communicate Effectively This course contributes to the Analyze Critically Goal by contributing to the following learning objectives: Demonstrate knowledge of the decision-making process Create and use appropriate quantitative analyses to inform decision making Measures of Achievement: Attainment of Course Objectives and Content & Skill Goals will be measured through homework problems, quizzes, and the final exam. Content and Skills Goals: By the end of this course, students should be able to: Analyze changes in markets through the use of supply and demand diagrams. Calculate elasticity. Determine the profit maximizing price and quantity under different market scenarios. Explain why government intervention in markets is sometimes necessary. 2

3 3 Grading Scale/Weight: Guaranteed Grading Scale: % A % B % C % D % F The Curve : Grades of AB and BC are given at the discretion of the instructor depending upon the overall distribution of ECO124 grades in my sections. If you score an 89% you are guaranteed a B but depending up the overall grade distribution in ECO124 A & B your grade might improve to an AB. Economics is generally a subject learned through repetition. In order to ensure that students learn the concepts in macroeconomics they will be reviewed multiple times in multiple ways. For each chapter we will use the same process. 1. Read the Chapter 2. Pre-Lecture Aplia HW Due 3. Learn the chapter concepts in class with lecture, in class problem solving, discussion, etc 4. Post-Lecture Aplia HW Due 5. In class review of concepts and questions 6. In class quiz 7. Retention check- Final Exam Grade Components Weight Decision Making Process Project 1% Pre-Lecture Aplia Homework 4% Post-Lecture Aplia Homework 10% Quizzes (2 lowest quiz grades drop) 60% Comprehensive Final Exam 25% Aplia Homework: For each chapter Aplia homework will be assigned that relates to the chapter material. Using the Aplia system and the course calendar you are responsible for keeping track of assignments and due dates. Aplia Assignments are accessible always, therefore extensions will not be given unless a complete shutdown of the system has occurred which has lasted for more than 24 hours. Generally this means, Make-ups for late assignments will not be allowed. In other words plan for the disaster! Aplia is intended to be a significant learning tool in this course. 4% of your grade will be determined by the pre-lecture assignments that ensure your preparation for class and 10% will be determined by the post lecture assignments intended to ensure your learning and understanding of the concepts taught. For Grade It Now assignments you have three opportunities to get the concept right. It is in your best interest to use all three attempts since correct answers can help improve your grade. The news analyses are intended to help you apply economics to the real world, as a result these problems are often a bit more difficult. Quizzes: Quizzes will be given in class. 12 quizzes will be administered. The lowest two quiz grades will be dropped with missed quizzes scored with a grade of zero. No make-up quizzes will be given. Economics is the study of how to manage scarce resources. The two quiz grades which drop are the scarce resource you need to manage. Comprehensive Final Exam: The comprehensive final exam will be administered in accordance with the University Final Exam Schedule. This is a comprehensive final exam that will cover all of the chapters covered in the course (Ch 1, 2, 3, 4, 5,6,7,8,10,11,13,14,15,16,17,18,19). The final exam can only be made up if an acceptable excuse is provided with appropriate evidence (doctor s note, jury duty payment stub, etc ). Otherwise, it will be recorded as a zero. Please note there are very few excuses I will consider acceptable after the exam has passed. In almost all cases, I expect you to

4 discuss the absence with me ahead of time. Early exams are not allowed. Any student who scores 75% or above on the comprehensive final exam will receive a passing grade in the course even if the calculated course grade is an F.
