1 Brazosport College English 0410 (Summer) Instructor: Barbara Lewis Phone: or Office: B 210 Computer Lab F-100 Course Description: This is a combined lecture/lab, performance-based course designed to develop students critical reading and academic writing skills. The focus of the course will be on applying critical reading skills for organizing, analyzing, and retaining material and developing written work appropriate to the audience, purpose, situation, and length of the assignment. The course integrates preparation in basic academic reading skills with basic skills in writing a variety of academic essays. This is a course with a required lab. The course fulfills TSI requirements for reading and writing. Prequisites: None Course Objectives: This course is designed to prepare students for entry into college-level classes. Textbook and Course Materials Required: 1. Kemper, Dave, Verne Meyer, John Van Rys, Pat Sebranek. Fusion: Integrated Reading and Writing, Book 2, Second ed.. Australia: Wadsworth Cengage Learning, Print. ISBN: Aplia Access Card (This will be bundled with your Fusion Book 2, Second edition book at a discounted price if you purchase the bundle at the BC bookstore. Computer Lab Requirements: Brazosport College ID, login access for BC computers Student Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will: 1. Locate explicit textual information, draw complex inferences, and describe, analyze, and evaluate the information within and across multiple texts of varying lengths. 2. Comprehend and use vocabulary effectively in oral communication, reading, and writing. 3. Identify and analyze the audience, purpose, and message across a variety of texts. 4. Describe and apply insights gained from reading and writing a variety of texts.

2 5. Compose a variety of texts that demonstrate reading comprehension, clear focus, logical development of ideas, and use of appropriate language that advance the writer s purpose. 6. Determine and use effective approaches and rhetorical strategies for given reading and writing situations. 7. Generate ideas and gather information relevant to the topic and purpose, incorporating the ideas and words of other writers in student writing using established strategies. 8. Evaluate relevance and quality of ideas and information in recognizing, formulating, and developing a claim. 9. Develop and use effective reading and revision strategies to strengthen the writer s ability to compose college-level writing assignments. 10. Recognize and apply the conventions of standard English in reading and writing. In this class, any occurrence of academic dishonesty will be referred to the Dean of Student Services for prompt adjudication. Sanctions may be imposed beyond your grade in this course by the Dean of Student Services. Attendance and Withdrawal Policies: The English department s attendance policy requires students must be in attendance a minimum of 80% of all meetings. Those with absences exceeding Brazosport College s attendance policy will not receive credit for the course. You may withdraw yourself or I will withdraw you after you have reached the maximum number of absences. Course Requirements and Grading Policy: Each student must complete the required coursework to receive a passing grade for the class. Testing: Tests will be administered in class and on the computer. No cell phones allowed. Make-up Policy: Make-up tests will be by scheduled appointment in the Learning Services. Brazosport College Student ID is required to attend testing or pick up papers. Student Responsibilities: Students are expected to fully participate in this course. Students must provide 2 required texts, Aplia computer access card, and a flash drive for computer, and a yellow highlighter. These may be purchased at college bookstore or elsewhere. Students are under no obligation to purchase school books and materials from the BC bookstore. 2. The student is expected to follow standard rules, guidelines, and attendance policies as set forth by Brazosport College. Please review BC s policies online at 3. Cell phones may not be used during class. Texting is not allowed. I will confiscate phones if necessary. 4. Classroom/lab/library attendance is required for complete understanding of classroom assignments. Students should be aware that absences, half absences, and tardies will be recorded and will be counted when calculating attendance. Absences in excess of 2 violates this attendance requirements for this class. Violators will be denied credit for this lass.

6 6 5. Student is expected to complete all assignments as required. Late work will not be accepted. Absence does not excuse student from responsibility of completing and submitting assignment(s). Documentation of a family member s death or a major personal illness must be submitted for consideration of policy exceptions. Unscheduled quizzes and tests may be administered at random. If missed due to absence, they will not be reoffered. 8. Students must have essays tutored in the Student Success Center, E 200, , by a BC writing tutor by walk-in, appointment, or by an online appointment. Untutored papers will not be accepted. 9. Plagiarism is considered cheating and will result in a zero (0) for that assignment s grade. Any offense will result in immediate withdrawal from the class and will be reported to the Dean of Students. Diction 6. Mechanics General Characteristics of Each Grade Category: Grade of A: Significant thesis; excellent support of thesis; well-planned, well-proportioned, effective transitions; varied sentence structure; accurate and imaginative diction; free from errors in grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Grade of B: Significant point; adequate support; good arrangement, proportion and transitions; competent sentences; precise diction; practically free from mechanical errors. Grade of C: Fairly obvious point with relevant support, good planning, proportion, and transitions; mechanically correct sentences; conventional diction; infrequent mechanical errors. Grade of D: Obvious or insignificant point with inadequate or irrelevant support, weak planning, proportion, and transitions; unimaginative, faulty sentences; colorless diction; many mechanical errors. Grade of F: Trivial thesis, lack of supporting material, lack of plan, proportion, and transitions; frequent structural errors, inadequate diction, illiterate mechanics.
