1 English 9 Pre AP Capstone Ryan Lee jlee3@mcpss.com Description: This course includes instruction and practice in all English skills: reading, vocabulary, spelling, reading comprehension, writing, language mechanics, language expression, reference and study skills, and oral expression at a much more demanding level than that of a typical honors course. It also involves the use of extensive supplementary materials. Literature includes instruction in the critical analysis of major genres. Composition focuses upon writing in creative, logical, and critical modes. This course is designed to be challenging and requires students to engage in the rigorous scholarly practice of all English skills, as well as a strong focus on the critical thinking skills of reasoning, analyzing, evaluating, decision making, and problem solving. Supplies required for English 9 Pre AP Capstone: *Prentice Hall Literature, Grade 9 (provided) *To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee (provided) *Animal Farm by George Orwell (provided) *Our Town by Thornton Wilder ($12.00) Needed by 11/1 *Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury ($13.00) Needed by 1/7 *Three Ring Binder with Dividers - (Bellwork, Grammar Notes, Literature Notes, Writing, and Vocabulary) *Loose-leaf notebook paper (wide or college ruled) *Pens blue or black only, highlighters, pencils *Index cards (3x5) *$25 for required novels Note: Do not turn in assignments on paper from spiral-bound notebooks. Grading: Major Grades: tests, projects, & writing assignments = 60% Minor Grades: quizzes and classwork = 30% Homework = 10% MCPSS Grading Scale: A= B= C= D= E= below 60 Students will receive periodic progress reports throughout the term. In addition, students and parents are encouraged to check grades via the internet using INOW. LATE WORK IS NOT ACCEPTED! No extra credit work will be assigned.

2 Attendance, Tardiness, and Make-up Work: In order to succeed in English 9, attendance is necessary. The school attendance policy will be adhered to completely. Assignments (including tests) missed due to an excused absence must be completed within one week. Assignments (including tests) missed due to an unexcused absence is at the teacher s discretion to whether or not you can make up the work. If allowed, the same rules apply as for the excused absence. Tardiness is unacceptable. If you are late to class, you MUST have a note from another teacher or from the office. Please see the school s tardy policy for further information. Mr. Lee s Classroom Rules: 1. Students are expected to follow all rules and regulations of the school s student handbook (No food, drinks, gum; no hats or hoodies; legal uniform only; no cells phones, earbuds, other electronic devices visible). 2. Students must always come to class prepared with the correct materials (See above). 3. Students must be respectful to the teacher and other students at all times. Always respect other people and their property. This includes writing on or sticking gum under the desks or tables and throwing trash on the floor. 4. No charging cell phones in my room! 5. When a visitor is in our room, whether it is another student, teacher or administrator, the students will be seated, silent, and respectful. 6. When announcements are being made on the intercom, the students will listen and be silent. The same applies to when someone calls the teacher over the intercom. Mr. Lee s Discipline Plan: 1. Discipline Referral (Mr. Bearden) NOTE: Refusal to complete and/or return any punishment assignment without parent signature is a Class B Offense, which is willful disobedience, and will result in an administrator referral. Also, the teacher has the authority to change or add any rules at any time during the semester. The teacher also has the authority to send a student directly to the office without proceeding through any of the previous consequences. Academic Integrity: You have an expectation to always uphold the standards of scholarly learning. This means that you will complete your own work on all assignments. Copying of another student s work, cheating, plagiarism, and any other act that gives an unfair advantage to any student will result in the following: a zero for the assignment and contact of a parent/guardian. It is important to learn to pursue excellence in academics through honesty.

3 The easiest way to contact me is via or you may call to set up an appointment for a conference at I am available Monday-Friday from 1:10 2:40. I maintain a website for this class, and I encourage students and teachers to visit. On this website, the following can be found: 1. Calendar: the calendar on which I put all major assignments (i.e. those worth 60% of the grade). These will be up at least one week before I give them. I also put up all standing assignments (i.e. reading annotation due dates and vocabulary assignments). I do not put up daily homework assignments. For example, a grammar practice assignment given that day in class will not go up on the website. 2. Assignments: Just about everything I give out in class can be found on my website under the File Manager tab. The file manager is divided into five sections: Grammar, Literature, Vocabulary, Composition and Bellringers. Some of these are further divided into sub categories (e.g. Literature is divided into short stories, poems and novels). When I give out an assignment, it can be found under this file tab. Thus, if a student loses it, they still have access to it. 3. Forms: My syllabus and other forms can be found on the website. To get to the website, do the following: - Go to bakerhighschool.com - Click news (this will be on the top bar with other options like social, athletics, students, guidance, etc. - Once you have clicked news scroll down through to School Staff and click (this option will be third from the bottom). - Scroll through the faculty list until you see my name (Ryan Lee) and click. The website will come up when you click my name. I encourage you to check this calendar for important tests, assignments and events.

I will get in touch with you as soon as possible. This is an honors level course; therefore, the work will be more demanding than that in a regular course. As a part of the Honors English 9 class, two novels have been added to the curriculum that will need to be purchased by each student. I will be placing the order for these books very soon; it is not required that you purchase the books through the school. The order is completed as a courtesy to you. The cost of each of is as follows: Our Town $12.00 Fahrenheit 451 $13.00 Of course, you do not have to purchase the book through the school, but you do have the option. If you do choose to purchase your books through the school, please turn in your money, by September 5 th. Please review the following Academic Integrity policy with your student.
