1 STUDENT AFFAIRS ANNUAL REPORT DATA IMPORTANT: Please submit by August 20, 2008 and be sure to read the form instructions. As you prepare this be sure to refer to last year's division report and the departmental reports by clicking the link below (will open up in new window) Division of Student Affairs Annual Report ( Greek Life Report Department/Sub-Department Name: Greek Life/UTD/Frosh Camp Location: 800 Wilder Phone Number: 8679 Web Site: Department Annual Report web link (if applicable): Director Name: Justin Lawhead Director Number of Full-Time Staff: 2 Mission: The Center for Student Leadership and Involvement strives to cultivate a campus community where students can achieve success and become socially responsible citizens. Our purpose is to support the college's mission by providing services and programs while fostering student learning in and out of the classroom. The Center for Student Leadership and Involvement provides assistance to individual students and student organizations in the planning, management, and evaluation of programs and organizational activities directed toward meeting the wide variety of student needs and interests represented on this campus. By encouraging student leadership and social skills, student leadership and involvement cultivates a personal standard of ethics and values while providing opportunities that enhance the sense of community at the University of Memphis.

Major departments/functions/offices/responsibilities - brief listing: Advise four greek councils Oversee recruitment for all chapters and/or governance groups Assist organizations with implementing appropriate risk management procedures Maintain communications with all chapter national headquarters Produce academic grade report for all chapters 2. Up to 3 student learning objectives and outcomes for 07-08: Student Learning Objective #1 Students will develop a sense of interfraternalism and an understanding and appreciation of diversity through activities, both competitive and non-competitive, involving the entire Greek community. Outcome #1 (with supporting data) Greek presidents participated in a program called Salad which was intended to assist with greek students finding ways to seek common ground. The curriculum focused on: Rotating Panel Discussion A guided discussion will allow students to refute stereotypes brought out in the previous activity. SALAD Bar Lunch Activity Lunch where students thought about disparities that exist in resources between organizations whether theywere financial, membership, advising or others Values Activity Students focused on those values they share Case Studies This activity emphasized an approach which is inclusive of varying points of view when responding to a crisis. Action Plan Students took part in an action planning process and will leave with action items to accomplish in up to six different student-identified areas. Commitment Exercises Students to participate in a commitment exercise in which each student states what he or she will commit to doing after SALAD.
3 Reflections during the exercises revealed the following themes: 1.) Students began to appreciate the differences between recruitment and operations of each governance council and why those where in place. 2.) Action planning focused on better communication regarding events and programs, in order to provide more opportunities for organization collaboration and appreciation. A more detailed programming calendar was developed as a result of these discussions. Note: This will become an annual program and greek life staff will explore implementation strategies to create more progress with action planning and across governance council support and interaction. Student Learning Objective #2 Students will learn the benefits of Greek membership, as well as how to communicate effectively with student members, inter/national headquarters, alumni groups, community organizations and chapter advisors to ensure the continued partnership between the fraternities and sororities and these groups continue on the University of Memphis campus. Outcome #2 (with supporting data) Supporting data is lacking on this because we have not developed an instrument, due to greek life vacancies, to assess. We will be asking for testimonials during interviews and focus groups during the fall and spring to gather supporting data. Student Learning Objective #3 Greek life students will understand how to strive for academic achievement while serving in various leadership & involvement roles. Through these experiences, students will learn how to apply skills in various settings, how to transfer knowledge and enhance critical thinking. Outcome #3 (with supporting data) Fall 2007 Greek Women GPA 3.04 Non-Greek Women 2.67 Fall 2007 Greek Men 2.84 Non-Greek Men 2.63 Spring 2008 All Greek Average 2.99 All University 2.73 Greek Women 3.09 Non-Greek Women 2.70 Greek Men 2.83 Non-Greek Men 2.72
4 3. 3 main departmental goals and related accomplishments/results for 07-08: Goal #1 To increase student involvement in greek life. Results/Accomplishments #1A Greek Membership had a 10% increase from Fall 06 to Fall 07 Fall Fall Results/Accomplishments #1B Goal #2 Revise judicial procedures for each governing council (Interfraternity Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council, Panhellenic Council) Results/Accomplishments #2A This has been accomplished for two of the three councils Results/Accomplishments #2B Goal #3 Increase frosh camp attendance by 10% for Summer 2008 Results/Accomplishments #3A Frosh Camp Attendance Summer 2008 increased by 25%: Results/Accomplishments #3B 4. Individual staff and student accomplishments: Jon Campbell completed Alcohol Skills Training Program facilitator for Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity. The program nationally recognized for effectiveness in providing information to young adults about alcohol use and addiction, and teaches skills for avoiding, resisting, and setting limits on alcohol use, and it has been adapted by Pi Kapp for individualized training at all chapters.
5 5. 3 main bragging points for department What top administrators should know about your area: Bragging point #1 Highest total attendance ever at frosh camp 484 students! 384 Students attended in Summer 07. Bragging point #2 The following chapters have received recognition from their national offices Kappa Delta Kappa Delta recieved the 5-Star Chapter Award at their National Leadership Conference this summer. It is given to the chapters in the top 25%. Sigma Chi Awarded the The Peterson Significant Chapter Award. This award sponsored annually by the Sigma Chi Foundation is the highest honor bestowed upon an undergraduate chapter. Also won the the RMF Award, sponsored by the Risk Management Foundation, has historically been awarded to the chapter that best exemplifies risk management at the undergraduate level ATO ATO Foundation Impact Award outstanding charitable giving Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity Excellence Award -overall accomplishments during the year Good Samaritan Community Awareness Award-outstanding community service Omega Psi Phi Nationals Awards : Omega Man of the Year-Thadius Patterson-Gordon Undergraduate Chapter of the year Social Action Chapter of the year 5th Districts Awards : Undergraduate Chapter of the year Social Action Chapter of the year 2nd Vice District Representative-Thadius Patterson-Gordon Omega Man of the Year-Thadius Patterson-Gordon Scholar of the Year-William Harris
6 Pi Beta Phi Top 10 Chapter Award for donating to Pi Beta Phi Foundation. This award is given to the top ten pi phi chapters who donate the most money to our Pi Beta Phi Foundation. Most Improved Scholarship Award Pi Phi Spirit Award Alpha Gamma Delta Runner-up for the Annulet- Award given to a chapter who is efficient and successful in all areas. Jewel Chapter Award- Award given to a chapter who has raised over $ for the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation Quota Award- Award given to a chapter who has remained at or above quota. Phi Beta Sigma regional recognition Chapter Report of the Year Best Education program of the Year Best Social Action program of the Year, Best Bigger and Better Business program of the Year, and the McPherson Award. The McPherson award was received by Doneal Mack, it was given to the best male athlete in fraternity from the past year. Bragging point #3 Greek Membership had a 10% increase from Fall 06 to Fall 07 Fall Fall Revenue Producing Initiatives and Results: 7. Community Involvement and Partnerships: 8. If applicable, 3 major events/programs/etc. with description and assessment data (attendance info, funds raised, etc.): Event #1 All Sing 900 Attendance 9,000 dollars raised for follies/all sing scholarship Event #2
7 Frosh Camp Attendance: Frosh camp July Camp: 254 Registered 235 Attended 93% Retention August Camp: 267 Registered 249 Attended 93% Retention Event #3 Up Til Dawn February ,000 raised for St. Jude Children s Hospital 10. Detailed utilizations numbers (contact summaries) for as applicable headcount counseling sessions, cases, programs held, students housed, children cared for, tests administered, interviews hosted, internships posted and filled, etc. 11. Last year we asked you, In planning for 07-08, what intentional data can you collect to produce and analyze retention data and results? If you have not already addressed this in your submission, did you do this? What did you collect and what retention and graduation data do you have? 378/384 or 98% of the students that attended frosh camp in 2007 were registered for classes in fall 09 We are identifying procedures to maintain data on students who go through recruitment 12. Please review your planning document and discuss your achievement of your goals or any departures from your plans. Revise judicial procedures for each governing council (Interfraternity Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council, Panhellenic Council) This has been accomplished for two of the three councils Implement a two-day Greek Leadership Institute for all councils. This goal was put on hold due to staffing issues, but will be pursuing this effort again, this
8 academic year, with full staff. Strengthen relationship and provide training for Greek alumni advisors Host a spring reception for alumni advisors. Each organization s alumni advisory board/committee will be invited for an opportunity to network with other advisors This was held and response was positive. Conduct an advisor s forum in the Fall 2007 semester to educate advisors on proper procedures with the Office of Greek Affairs. The forum will address current Greek issues as well serve as another networking opportunity. This will be held in Fall Please reiterate from your planning document your 3 main initiatives for and explain any revisions made to your plans since your planning meeting with the AVP group. Revisions were made to all of these after working closing with chapters due to staffing issues as well as expressed interest from Dean and Vice President regarding data collection and maintenance. Initiative #1 Develop data collection strategies for those students attending frosh camp and joining greek organizations which would include tracking first year retention, academic performance and persistence. Initiative #2 Implement recruitment strategic plan for greek life. This is a departure from the original initiatives, but supports the interest in growing greek life population. Greek life staff will hold focus groups with advisors and greek leaders to discuss efforts to increase greek life participation. Staff will also meet with chapters who are below the averages for governance councils or are close to not meeting the ten member organizational requirement and Initiative #3 To hold a greek leaders conference focused on the following themes: 1.) Transition training for new officers. 2.) Identifying common themes to build collaboration chapters. 3.) To communicate departmental behavior expectations to members beyond presidents. 4.) To identify ways our department can best support chapters and growth.
