Pearson Prentice- Hall 2008 ABOUT THIS COURSE The Biology course introduces students to the science of life, starting with the structure of an atom and working up to the structure of the Earth. The goal of the course is for students to not only understand how life works, but also to analyze new ideas, ask questions, and create experiments to solve problems. We will use scientific inquiry and laboratories to defend our knowledge, solidify comprehension, practice lab safety, and analyze data using graphs. By the end of the course students will be able to explain the chemical and biological makeup of life, and the environmental factors that influence life. They will also be able to apply this knowledge to the environmental and health choices they make in the future. LATE WORK Students will automatically receive a grade of 80% for 1 day, 50% for 2 days and 0% on late assignments after 3 days. If an assignment is not turned in when asked for, it is late. Projects, labs and notebook checks only will lose points per class period they are late. Make up work due to an absence must be completed within 5 days of the absence or it will be counted as late. Special situations will be handled on a personal basis. Tutoring: Tuesdays and Thursdays 3:20-4:15 See other times if that does not work for you. Review your student s NOTEBOOKS. A running list of all assignments and printable worksheets/ notes will be available. When possible. Biology notebooks are checked about ONCE per six SCIENCE EXPECTATIONS 1. No food, candy, gum or drinks in the classrooms. Water is acceptable in a clear, plastic bottle but is NOT allowed at the lab station. 2. Electronics must be in the slot everyday unless needed for classroom use. No texts. No calls. No games. NO EXCEPTIONS! 3. Follow the dress code! 4. Students must be in their seats, silent, prepared and working when the bell rings. Class starts with the students. Late students must go check in at the office and must have a valid pass. 5. Students should get all they need the first 5 minutes of class and should not leave seat without permission. You will be up and moving. 6. RESPECT everything and everyone at all times, including yourself! 7. Is encouraged that restroom breaks be taken between classes. First 15 and Last 15 minutes of class, no restroom breaks allowed. 8. Follow all HP, teacher & lab safety rules always! GRADING PERCENTAGES Exams = 40% Labs/Projects =30% Quizzes= 20% Daily/HW= 10%

Please check NetClassroom and the class website for important information concerning grades. Notebooks are very important in this course!! Stay organized!! Most assignments will be glued in student notebooks and checked regularly. Students will receive a date-stamp for an assignment ONLY if they COMPLETED that assignment. Portfolios will be checked at least once quarter. (for example, after the first 20 days) Flash Cards need to be created for vocabulary quizzes and study purposes. Expect a major quizzes during each unit. Many will be unannounced. Final exams are administered periodically throughout the year. There will be some projects assigned throughout the year where students will be required to do research and/or create models. Hyde Park policy will be followed for students who do not complete their OWN work! Expect homework every night. A NOTE FROM THE TESTING CENTER Hyde Park s Testing Center is available for all students to book a time to make up exams and/or to use any approved test accommodations (extended time, small group setting, reader, etc.). The Testing Center is open from 7:00am 5:00pm and located in Room 139 of the High School. All students must sign up through the Testing Center link 12 hours in advance. Students will not be allowed to schedule a time past the 12 hour deadline and will need to sign up for an alternate time. All students can book a time before school, study hall, off period, lunch or after school. Only students approved through the LEAP Program may schedule an exam during their academic class period the test is given. To clarify this policy, the following are examples of academic dishonesty that may result in a zero on the work in question as well as disciplinary action. Discussing a quiz/exam with any student who has not taken that quiz/exam Asking another student to see ANY completed homework, including labs and lab reports Giving another student ANY completed homework, including labs and lab reports Downloading or copying ANY- THING from the internet, no matter how brief and turning it in as your own work. Turning in ANYTHING that is not completely your own work.
